Likely that's true of most politicians and top news makers.
There are spam-bot accounts that boost the rankings and repost tweets automatically.
The "number of followers" is not a number that has much significance. It's like announcing the "number of views" a video gets. It has to do with how many people want to be informed of what somebody posts. The kardashians have lot of followers, but most people do that just to look at the pretty pictures.

I though it was over 10 million according to some place I was looking at, while the original figure was over 20 mil, but who knows.... Do these figures drop over time, like some people might unfollow him after they loose their anti-Trump animus?

I'm not really following the details that well, was originally going to make it a political thread but occasionally like to post in this section for more engagement etc. I was personally more interested in the Astroturf implications of this, especially with other things going on then in the media like talk by Democrats and media folks talking of "fortifying the election" against Trump stealing it and such.

The accounts are real but because - some people don't give a profile, which is information social media really don't need - some people use other profiles - some people are not avid Twitter users - and such are considered fate. The followers are real no matter how you try to slice it or dice it.
