I don't see a 3 tier cosmology in the Bible. There is earth(land), sea(ocean), sky(1st heaven), space(2nd heaven), Heaven(3rd heaven), Sheol(underworld), Tartarus(prison of demons), and Hell(lake of fire).
You could organize these into tiers if you want. But I see more than 3 here. If you divide the physical dimension from the spiritual, you get a 2 tiered cosmology. Sky and space are it for a strictly physical cosmology.
Sure and you could add tiers but there are three are primary realms or dimensions. sea and sky are part of earth. Tartarus, Gehenna, and Abyss are part of Sheol aka Hades. Where is space in the Bible?
So maybe it should be called three realm cosmology. A few related verses.
[Exo 20:4 ESV] 4 "You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in
heaven above, or that is in the
earth beneath, or that is in the water
under the earth.
[Job 26:5-6 ] "The dead are in deep anguish,
those beneath the waters and all that live in them. 6
The realm of the dead (repha) is naked before God;
Destruction (Abaddon) lies uncovered.
[Phl 2:10 NIV] 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, i
n heaven and
on earth and
under the earth,
[Eph 4:8-9 NIV] 8 This is why it says: "When
he ascended on high, he took
many captives and gave gifts to his people." 9 (What does "
he ascended" mean except that he also
descended to the lower, earthly regions (Or
the depths of the earth)? [Eph 4:10 ESV] 10 He who
descended is the one who also
ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.)
[Rev 5:3, 13 NIV] 3 But no one in
heaven or on
earth or
under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. ... 13 Then I heard every creature
in heaven and
on earth and
under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: "
To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!"
