Because of it's weight.
What does weight have to do with anything? Why should something heavy fall?
I wonder what they did before gravity was invented
That's like asking where was the sun before God created it. Gravity exists because God created it, whether you believe it was a good idea or not.

Dunno, you'll have to ask God ^_^
As you'll have to ask him why He saw fit to create gravity. Maybe it was a mistake and if you ask Him nicely He'll fix it.

A small interlude

Hey, that old boy is almost talented enough to play in a cover band in a bar here in Nashville. He'd want to keep his day job, though.

8 ways life would get weird on a flat Earth

Just how strange would the world be if it were flat?
www.livescience.com
www.livescience.com

How ridiculous these 8 ways are.

1. Say goodbye to gravity (at least as we know it)

No such thing as Gravity

2. It would certainly clear the atmosphere

Which is the firmament earths protective dome

3. Cloudy with a chance of sideways rain

^_^

4. We would all get lost

Compasses work perfectly well on a flat earth

5. Some journeys would take forever

I don't see how, in fact it would be quite the opposite

6. No more auroras and we'd all be roasted

Why -The earth is protected by the firmament.

7. We'd all have to share the same night sky

we do now

8. Hurricanes would be a thing of the past

Again I can't see how

I’ve cautioned you about the moral peril of accusing NASA and others of dishonesty, particularly since, as I have demonstrated, there are approaches to believing in a flat Earth that are not incompatible with space travel.

Whether you believe the earth to be a flat disc or a globe, gravity is just the name we give to what holds us on to the earth.

No, the atmosphere consists of gases like oxygen and nitrogen.

3. Cloudy with a chance of sideways rain

Well it gets cloudy whatever shape you believe the earth to be, and if the wind is strong enough, the rain can be almost horizontal.

7. We'd all have to share the same night sky

we do now
No we don't. Can you see the constellation known as The Southern Cross from your home in South Wales? Can people living in Australia or New Zealand see the constellation variously known as the Plough, the Great Bear, and Ursa Major?

This is a bit of an old post of mine you are quoting from

No, the atmosphere consists of gases like oxygen and nitrogen.

Yes but what stops these gases from escaping into your supposed space ?

No we don't. Can you see the constellation known as The Southern Cross from your home in South Wales? Can people living in Australia or New Zealand see the constellation variously known as the Plough, the Great Bear, and Ursa Major?

This is called the Coriolis effect which has been explained, but this doesn't mean that we don't all share the same night sky.

Yes but what stops these gases from escaping into your supposed space ?

Hydrogen and helium do escape into space. The other gases do not escape because of their weight (which is why a balloon must be filled with hydrogen or helium or hot air in order to float, and to reach greater altitudes, only sealed hydrogen and helium balloons work.

Have you ever been in the mountains, where the air is thin?

This is called the Coriolis effect which has been explained, but this doesn't mean that we don't all share the same night sky.

You must be thinking of something else - the Coriolis effect could not apply to a stationary firmament.

Also I would note that it is intellectually untenable to cherry pick from classical physics in defense of a Flat Earth since the models of classical physics, which are co-dependent upon each other mathematically, require a round Earth.

There are approaches, as I told you, to reconciling flat Earth with what we can observe, but they require new physics. And I gave you an example of such a model.
