I think when a person is more concerned with being correct in their own eyes, they have eclipsed their own desire to know what may actually be truth.

Concerning "doubt" ... perhaps many believers may be afraid to doubt because it is equated with negative consequences (i.e. the snake in the Garden, etc).

That may be true in cases related to religion, but I've seen the pattern play out before in other areas of pure science as well. There is an element of what I'd call "potential ego fry" if they admit that certain aspects of their claims were false, but that seems to be the only immediate negative consequence in many cases.

Oh I think it's part of the human condition in general. It may be more pronounced in some areas, or within certain groups, etc.

Most people believe in evolution because that what they were taught regardless of the scientific evidence (like dGRN will not allow changes which is responsible for body plans. Marshall agrees with Myers about the facts but believes somehow the past was different. It had to be for ToE to be true)
Again we all think we are just being influenced while others are brain-washed. The idea of just how much the masses were being "brain-wash" drove the unibomber mad to live like a hermit.

I would like to add... Until you grasp the FACT that Evolution is NOT a belief, you will not understand any of the rest of it.
You don't need to "Believe in" something when you KNOW it's a fact backed up by more evidence than you could fit in a thousand Bibles and fill dozens of churches with hard evidence.
