  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    We Have to Believe It!

Don’t Be Unaware 1 Corinthians 10:1-5 ESV For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual...

Are we ever justified in believing p without sufficient evidence for p?

In his landmark essay "The Ethics of Belief" William Clifford argued, “It is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone to believe anything on insufficient evidence.” Do you agree? Why or why not? Questions to consider: 1. What constitutes sufficient evidence? 2. How does one know when one has...

The basic problem we face: is that God does play dice, with *parts* of Creation

Hi there, So the quote you may know is from Albert Einstein, who said "God does not play dice, with the Universe". I would extrapolate slightly different, only slightly: I would say "God does play dice, with parts of the Universe". The history of mankind then, is in part a reflection of the...

    I want to believe but...

Greetings. Let me start by saying I have no interest in debating anyone on anything. If our ideas don't match, just know that I'm totally open to mine changing -- in fact that's why I'm posting this. That said, here's the deal... I believe in Christ. I believe He was the son of God, died for...

Life of an Orthodox Christian - A Brief Depiction (Pencils & Prayer Ropes)

A Facebook friend (Father) Barnabas Powell posted this on his Facebook wall. Seems pretty good so far (still watching it)! I really like the artistic style of it. So far it seems like it is a nice little Cliff Notes primer on being Eastern Orthodox.

    Easy Believism

“…because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.” Rom. 10:9-10 ESV I believe this passage of scripture in...

    Questioning and Fearful

I'm new to this forum site and new to questioning my beliefs. Over the last year I've experienced terrible existential anxiety and became fearful for the end of my life, searching for proof that when this all ends I'll be with God and my family in heaven. When I think of my death I think of...

    Is belief a choice?

Given any proposition p, is it a matter of choice to believe that p is true (or false)? It seems to me that if I strongly believe that p is true, then I will not be able to simply choose to believe that p is false. And, likewise, if I strongly believe that p is false, then I will not be able to...

    Mental illness and Christianity/religion

I met a guy who thought he was Jesus. He genuinely believed that he was the Son of God returned to the Earth, and he went out into the streets to teach his new gospel. He was, in reality, babbling complete nonsense at strangers and he was quickly arrested. He thought the cops were taking him...

[EDIT] The praxis of making a Leap of Faith ...

[See the edit below for additional direction on this OP thread! Thanks!] Kierkegaard, in relation to Lessing, spoke about a leap of faith. And his whys and wherefores for doing so were a little like this (and don't worry, it's a short movie clip): What?! You wouldn't make such a leap for...

    How do you resolve unbelief?

All things are possible for the one who believes, but what happens when you can't find faith? The Bible says that salvation through faith is a gift from God, and this speaks to me. I don't feel that faith and belief is a conscious choice that I can make; my belief comes from what I know to be...

    Faith in Action

Hebrews 11:1-3, 6 ESV Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are...

Not 'weirded out' by Christian Faith? Maybe your God is too small!

As I've encountered the various fragmentary theological concepts in the Bible, swimming around as they do within the minds of the writers of both the Old Testament and the New, I've often had the feeling of being somewhat 'weirded out' by it all. This has been markedly the case when I've...

    Which You Received

1 Corinthians 15:1-2 ESV Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. The gospel Paul preached What was the gospel that...

    Overwhelmed in Church

I have been wanting to become more involved with my religion in the past year (my family is Christian but never goes to church or is particularly religious), but when I go to church, it feels both too real and also too little. I didn't grow up going, so I feel a little distant not having read...

    Exposed!

John 3:16 NASB “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” God the Father gave His only begotten Son Jesus Christ (God the Son) to death on a cross to die for our freedom from sin. He who knew no sin...

    Grace and Truth

Jesus Christ, God the Son – creator of the universe and all that has the breath of life in them given them by God – left his throne in heaven, humbled himself, took on human form, and suffered like we suffer. He was also tempted like we are tempted, yet without sin. While he lived on this...

For me, things are Greener on the other side ... !

As I sit on the epistemological fence and contemplate my own subjective perception about religious truth, I also contemplate on my own subjective perception about science and science's place in how I might further orient a reflexive contemplation about my religious truth. And I ask myself...

Lost in the Tower of Atheistic Terror !!! Aaaggghhhh !!!

In the following video, Street Epistemologist Anthony Magnabosco (an outspoken [but friendly] atheist) narrates material created by Rebecca Fox. Needless to say, and without giving anything away, the video presents an angle on epistemology which directs us to consider various implications about...

    Free Gift

“Ho! Every one who thirsts, come to the waters; And you who have no money come, buy and eat. Come, buy wine and milk Without money and without cost. “Why do you spend money for what is not bread, And your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, And delight...
