  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No, it was said. Google it. They interveviewed blacks and asked them if they had problems getting ID as black Americans and they all said no. They laughed when told that democrats said they couldn't get an id.
I don’t need to google it because “they all said no” is an absolute statement that is ridiculous. The statement is not “ couldn’t “ but disproportionately more difficult for enough ( not all) to cause concern of disenfranchisement.

It wasn't true that blacks needed ID. It was a lie.

That is not what was said. It wasn’t about knowledge, but barriers to access to vital documents through cost, distance and time off work needed to obtain missing documents and apply for ID. This disproportionately affects rural and low income blacks. ID to register and vote needs to be as accessible as possible with minimal cost to overcome this disparity.
Yet Mandani is requiring it for a snow shoveling job. The requirement discriminates against black people. He was supposedly all about eliminating discrimination, not practicing it.

So typical of progressive socialists.
Nice attempt at insulting all progressive socialists.

The article said 2 forms of ID, a Social Security card and 2 small pictures which are probably for some files and nametag.

Did Mamdani make the rule? Why no, he did not.

As the Big Apple faces its second snowstorm in less than a month and its first blizzard since 2016, the 34-year-old mayor announced on Saturday that emergency snow shovelers would be welcome to join the efforts of 1,000 such workers deployed by the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) from Sunday.
To select these workers, Mamdani and the DSNY are working under ID requirements set by prior administrations and which were neither loosened nor tightened by the new mayor.

Did you see the second sentence? I will make it bold:

"To select these workers, Mamdani and the DSNY are working under ID requirements set by prior administrations and which were neither loosened nor tightened by the new mayor. "

So those requirements were not created by Mamdani, and have been there for previous mayoral administrations.

This is just another case of false outrage by the right. It shows the desperation of the right.

Keep trying. Two things not related.

ID needed for a snow shoveling job, ID not needed for voting in an election. Both things relating to IDs, so yeah, they're related.

New York citizens need to provide ID in order to register to vote.

The form they need to fill out is here:

The state can see who you are with your name and last for digits of your SS number, or drivers license.

To get a driver's license, a birth certificate or proof of birthdate is

Yes, a certified birth certificate is generally required to get your first driver's license
to prove identity, age, and legal presence in the U.S.. While it is the standard document, it can sometimes be replaced by a valid U.S. passport, certificate of naturalization, or permanent resident card.

That's as it is now, but Mamdani has advocated for doing away with the photo ID requirement.

AI source
Based on reports from February 2026, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), has expressed opposition to voter ID requirements.
The DSA, with which Mamdani is affiliated, has formally opposed voter ID laws, labeling them as "racist".

They would still need a birth certificate to get a driver's license. It would be the state that determined requirements for elections involving state and federal elections.

As has been shown to you, the requirements for the job aren't related to Mamdani, so no, they aren't related.

Well, okay, this isn’t a “bad thing” that Mamdani done, but as he’ll likely accrue dozens of “bad things”, people will still criticize anything that he takes it into his mind to do.

That’s still allowed, AFAIK.

I don't characterize the roughly 83% of Americans who support voter ID as being desperate. This is just one of many many examples. Mamdami used the same policy as Democrat Mayor Adams, he has received feedback, has he said he will require no IDs in the future?

You have to have a birth certificate for all sorts of things, from enrolling in school to getting a driver's license. Other forms of ID include bills with the person's name confirming the address. Allowable forms of ID vary, though Real ID may have uniform requirement. The point is that most already have this means of verification.

A state went so far as to have a mobile ID van. Good idea, right? A van going from community to community to make it convenient to get an ID. Except when this van was in a community tended not to be reported. The only way I knew about it was from a newspaper opinion column urging people not to make use of it. Seems the paper had come out against voter ID and thought people making use of the van would be a bad thing.

I do find it curious that it's easy to find groups that make an effort to register voters and to take them to the polls, but very few offering to take them to get an ID. Make of that what you will.

It's Democratic Mayor Adams, and mayors before him. It was set up to hire people so they need that SS card, and ID for W2 and being on the employment roles.

The desperation is the story in the OP as people needing 5 IDs to shovel snow for pay when it is and that it is all because of Mamdani rather than something in place for years and multiple administrations. Add the click bait title (really? Jim Snow 2.0?), then it is obvious a biased article not based on the whole truth.

Jim Crow 2.0 is biased, part of the name calling launched against caring conservatives.

Yes, that term has been used by Sen. Schumer and other civil rights activists for specific legislative items like the SAVE act which are seen to be voter suppression. During the Jim Crow era, black voters were suppressed in various ways.

"Jim Snow 2.0" as used in that article is nonsensical. Mamdani did not impose any new rules regarding hiring employees for shoveling snow. The NY Department of Sanitation has those hiring rules. There is no relationship to Jim Crow voter suppression as the NYDS is hiring temp workers. "Jim Snow 2.0" was simply used to create outrage at Mamdani even though he did not make those rules.

I'm confused now. Are they needing 5 IDs or 2? Which is it?
2 pieces of ID, 2 small pictures and have a Social Security number. The 2 pictures are probable for a file or one could be for a name tag.

It has been that way since the Federal government passed the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
