  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

At least 41% of G-rated series and 41% of TV-Y7-rated series on Netflix feature LGBT content, including trans-identifying characters and same-sex couples, according to a new study.

The new report, "LGBTQ Messaging Pervasive In Netflix Children's Programming," compiles references to LGBT-related messages and storylines across 326 Netflix shows aimed at children.

The study, released by the Washington-based Christian conservative advocacy group Concerned Women for America, analyzed licensed and original shows on the streaming platform, with ratings ranging from TV-G, TV-Y or TV-Y7.

The study, released by the Washington-based Christian conservative advocacy group Concerned Women for America, analyzed licensed and original shows on the streaming platform, with ratings ranging from TV-G, TV-Y or TV-Y7.

"Netflix's anti-child, anti-family agenda has finally been exposed — its children's programming has been infiltrated by adult preoccupations with sexual preferences and gender identity," CWA President and CEO Penny Nance said in a statement shared with The Christian Post.

Suppose Netflix (and similar streaming services) had a more detailed rating system, so instead of just an age, there was some content description, and there was a way to select/screen based on some of these descriptions. "Contains LGBTQ content." "Contains depictions of smoking." "Contains depictions of religious observance" (maybe listing which religion). "Contains teenage romance", etc. Then parents could select for or screen out topics they want their children to be able to see. Would that solution satisfy the CWA folks?

I note that the content that one family might seek out is content that another family might wish to avoid. Surely a computer program could be written to let viewers select content in this way.

They have a rating system like you describe but it doesn't include warnings for LGBTQ content

I'd support adding a note about LGBTQ content to the rating system, and then viewers could make more informed choices.

If a group are 1.5% of the population and yet have 41% of air time on Netflix, it isn't a representation it's an agenda. God Bless.

If we expand the statistic to include everyone who has family or friends who are gay or gender-diverse, the number rises to much more than 1.5%.

But I'll agree that part of the picture is a deliberate intention to invite viewers to see LGBTQ people as part of the normal variety of humankind.

Agreed. What’s the point anyway? Most children don’t even know their sexuality yet!

I’m all for free choice and that’s fair.

Sort of like how older Disney movies had racist undertones, instead of deleting them completely, a “warning” would suffice.

(not that I’m competing the two. Parents can make their own informed decision for their children).

Sounds perfectly good to me! After all we have warnings on games, cds, movies, and other content. That way people can choose what media they want to consume or not! Eh?

First, it's more like 9%. LGBTQ+ Identification in U.S. Rises to 9.3%. Since most shows have at least 11 characters, you'd expect nearly 100% to have an LGBT character. There is usually more than 1 main character, so you'd expect something like 30% of shows to have an LGBT main character.

It depends upon generation. 1.5% would be for people born before 1945. For the youngest generation it's 23.1%. I suspect Netflix probably sees younger generations as important parts of their market. So 40% with an LGBT main character might be appropriate.

The article gives a chart. You'll see that the number has been growing rapidly, so you may have used old data.

Note that LGBT isn't just gay. From the same Gallup survey: "Overall, 85.7% say they are straight, 5.2% are bisexual, 2.0% are gay, 1.4% are lesbian and 1.3% are transgender. Just under 1% mention some other LGBTQ+ identity, such as pansexual, asexual or queer. Five percent of respondents decline to answer the question."

Warnings would be fine. If you expec to protect children from LGBT people, note that many of their friends will be LGBT, so it's not going to happen. But I understand there are people who don't want to see it.

As a former Marine, I tried to watch "Boots," on Netflix. Sure enough, it promoted homosexuality
with graphic scenes. I had to shut it off.
That’s ridiculous! Ugh!

In fairness, Wikipedia tells me that Boots is a TV series based on the book The Pink Marine, which is apparently a memoir written by a gay man who joined the Marines at a time before "Don't ask, don't tell". I haven't watched the series, but given that description, I would expect the show to have some gay stuff in it.

I see also that Netflix's description on its preview screen is "This coming-of-age series follows a closeted gay Marine recruit through the ups and downs of boot camp -- and the even tougher journey of self-discovery." It's rated "TV-MA: language, nudity, smoking". I'd say Netflix did its job in telling the viewer what the show was going to be about.

The main actor, Miles Heizer, was in 13 Reasons Why (it had a few same-sex kiss scenes), and is openly gay in real life.

Thanks for the info!

I've never seen Boots though.

I've seen every episode of 13 Reasons Why and read the book. I probably won't watch Boots, though.

For the record, I've seen countless LGBT+ themed movies, such as Brokeback Mountain, Beautiful Thing, Get Real, Midnight Cowboy, Carol, Age of Seventeen, But I'm a Cheerleader, Mrs. Doubtfire, Some Like it Hot, The Birdcage, Philadelphia, And the Band Played On among many others. Only difference is I saw them AS AN ADULT. I'm all for freedom of choice for adults. I have no problem with that. Eh?

Hello! You're right 1.5% was an old figure from a previous UK Census. The last UK census in 2023 gave 3.8% identifying as gay or queer, 10.4% of 18-24 year olds. Still hugely less than the 41% of content on Netflix which means Netflix are promoting an agenda not representing demographics. Their agenda seems to be working, the number of people identifying as homosexual is increasing. God Bless :)
