There isn't a person around us who has not benefited significantly from the programs instituted by Lyndon B. Johnson in the 1960's and passed at great personal cost.
These programs: Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act, Medicare, Medicaid, Headstart, Higher Education Act (Pell Grants, student loans), Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Immigration Act of 1965.
The Immigration Act eliminated quotas favoring Europeans.
Even the most conservative among you have been affected by these laws.
My grandfather died when I was 8 years old. He suffered a stroke and spent several weeks in a hospital for the destitute in East Meadow, NY. I'm sure that most states didn't even have a hospital like this for the poor. Seniors had no medical insurance at all.
Have your grandparents needed nursing home care? Thank LBJ. Did you need a student loan or Pell grant to advance your education? Thank LBJ. Did you or your parents come here from a country outside of Europe? Thank LBJ.
Before you join the Great Society wrecking crew, think about your life, your parents' lives, your grandparents' lives. Think about your friends' lives. Think about how these programs have improved our lives--or even saved them.
Thank you, LBJ. (Yes, you made mistakes in Vietnam but you changed our country for good.)
