  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Army awarded the Distinguished Service Cross to Benning for "extraordinary heroism in action" during events that took place Oct. 9, 1918, south of Exermont, France. (Benning received his award via U.S. mail, as he declined to have it presented to him with military honors. Officers at Benning's local recruiting office stated that such modesty was emblematic of the spirit of soldiers who have merited such awards, according to a local newspaper clipping from the time).

There are many unsung American heroes.

I grew up just north of Ft. Benning in Columbus, GA. I am so glad to see that its name has been restored.

Good luck to the next Democrat who wants to rename the base now.

Sure, but the only reason this base is named after Cpl. Benning is that he happened to have the right last name. From what I can find, he has no connection to the fort, and his service, while heroic, is not really exceptional. He served in the army for two years. Yes, he did have a DSC, but so do plenty of people, including the person the fort was previously named after. And Lt. Gen. Moore clearly had a greater impact on the Army than Cpl. Benning did. All this is Secretary Hegseth finding a way to get around the expressed will of Congress. And unlike the Fort Liberty thing, this one insults a hero by saying he was less worthy than a random person who happened to have the right last name.

Congress is free to pass a law requiring a name change should they not agree with the renaming by the Secretary of Defense. So far Congress has not done so, but you are free to contact your representative and voice your opinion.

They did. You might even remember that they had to pass it again over Trump's veto.
