'As the negative impacts of Biden's lawless immigration policies continue unabated, the burden of the Biden administration's failure falls on local law enforcement who lack the resources to deal with the crisis,' DeSantis said.

While I would agree with DeSantis about the current administration's inaction being a problem with regards to border security (and have had a pretty positive view of DeSantis in his handling of other issues). I think the "activating the national guard" thing is a little more for show than substance. That feels like more of a "Trump move". He should just stick with what he's been doing as it's been working.

Per the article:
DeSantis activated the state National Guard in response to 90 Cuban migrants who were apprehended after a series of five landings in the Florida Keys over the last 24 hours.

'As the negative impacts of Biden's lawless immigration policies continue unabated, the burden of the Biden administration's failure falls on local law enforcement who lack the resources to deal with the crisis,' DeSantis said.

'That is why I am activating the National Guard and directing state resources to help alleviate the strain on local resources. When Biden continues to ignore his legal responsibilities, we will step in to support our communities.'

The move comes after at least 500 migrants arrived in waves earlier this week due to soaring inflations and food shortages in Cuba.

Seems like activating the national guard is overkill given the low numbers that FL experiences compared to border states. Per the DOJ, there are 1500 gangs (who collectively have 65,000 members) in the state of Florida. All of whom are more violent and pose a bigger threat than almost any Cuban trying to get the heck out of Cuba (and who could blame them, it's a terrible socialist hellhole). If you don't need to activate the national guard to deal with 1500 gangs, then you certainly don't need to activate them for 500 poor people floating over on makeshift rafts.

Not to mention, a move like this could backfire for him. A lot of gains he's made with the Hispanic community in Florida has been due to the fact that Florida has a large Cuban community...and Cubans don't vote the same way other Hispanic groups do. Cubans have been far more conservative leaning due to their bad run-ins with communism and socialism in their country of origin.

That could change if the guy they currently admire does a PR stunt involving activating the national guard to keep their cousins out (their cousins, who in all likelihood, would apply for asylum and citizenship status pretty quickly, and start voting republican as soon as they're eligible)

While DeSantis put up a commanding victory in this last election winning by well over a million votes...there are well over a million Cuban Americans living in Florida (and nearly two thirds of them vote GOP). That's not a group he can afford to alienate.

We have an international disaster, the numbers of invaders are increasing in huge numbers, more than half a million more in Joe's second year than first. The cartels now have taken in huge amounts of money courtesy of Joe and are increasingly more and more powerful. I don't know if the Mexican or U.S. governments in their current state will be able to stop the cartels, they can buy off people in the U.S. and Mexican administrations. Only now that Joe's base is starting to take small actions, the Democrat mayor of New York City, the Democrat governor of Colorado, is the writing on the wall for Joe's administration and Joe finally is forced into actually going to the border. But it will do little if any good at this time.

I see the pivot from “he won’t go to the border” to “even if he goes to the border, it’s ‘too little, too late!’.”, is right on track. And less than 150 words!
Impressive.

He should go, it is a tragedy he waited for two years but he has pretty much been forced to do so by fellow Democrats. He should do everything he can to mitigate this international disaster. But no matter who is president the devastation Joe has caused in just two years will be felt by America for decades.

I’m not accusing anyone of wanting to eventually have a genocide of immigrants. But if one wanted to do that, calling them “invaders” would be a good way to starting to persuade people to go in that direction.

As noted, we do have an issue with our southern border.

However, my post was addressing something that DeSantis is largely doing "for show" given that FL isn't the same situation as Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. And the stated justification for his move was listed as being because of 500 Cubans who showed up in FL.

And as also noted, this isn't a risk-free move for DeSantis. Per the stats I listed, the Cuban population in FL is currently pretty solidly behind DeSantis. That could change if starts doing too many things like this, specifically targeted at Cubans, that apparently have no benefit other than trying to impress conservatives in other states. DeSantis's landslide victory was, in large part, thanks to the fact that two thirds of the million+ Cuban population in FL voted for him. (many of whom came here the same way he's trying to block, and later became GOP-voting citizens)

I'm not saying that DeSantis hasn't rightfully diagnosed a problem with Biden's handling of US-Mexico border situation, I'm saying his stunt here isn't really addressing that same issue and seems to simply be a way to score brownie points with a certain subset of the base.

Critiquing Biden's handling of one immigration facet by doing something that's targeting a completely different facet of immigration isn't really accomplishing anything.

You understand that many if not most of those gangs started as illegal migrant communities (In Florida anyway). The Haitians are one of the worst examples.

Under US law, Cubans that land on US shores are entitled to be here (the so-called "Wet foot/dry foot" law). So I think DeSantis, who is an intelligent man familiar with US laws, is just engaged in cynical political theater.
