What God created He can certainly destroy but not one single verse says God has or will destroy even one soul in hell.
And just for fun the word usually translated "destroy" is also used for spoiled wine and food, the fading beauty of flowers, the lost sheep, the prodigal son, death by sea and snakes etc.
Destroy is to ruin, cause loss of well being, it is not to cause loss of being or to annihilate.

Adam's rebellion, death/sin and the barrier between man and God are all
the result of sin, the penalty for which justice requires be paid first in order to right Adam's wrong, conquer death/sin and remove the barrier between man and God.

And that penalty for sin is divine punishment; i.e. our condemnation in Gehenna.

There can be no sin without divine justice of punishment, or God would not be just.

The only way to separate sin from its punishment is to pay the punishment, then God can in justice right Adam's wrong, conquer death/sin and remove the barrier between man and God.

There can be no righting Adam's wrong, conquering of death/sin and removing the barrier between man and God without first paying the debt (punishment) due.

So there is no way in divine justice to have a problem of sin "to conquer" without the punishment of sin to go with it, which is why the "good news" of the gospel is that the punishment (Gehenna) has been dealt with, so that now the problem can also be dealt with.

There's two ways to view sin.

It can be viewed as a crime that needs to be punished by a wrathful prosecutor.

Or it can be viewed as a sickness that needs to be cured by a loving great physician.

The latter is the original 2000 year old orthodox view.

I think the eternal torture doctrine is important to some because they believe it serves as a motivator and a deterrent. People will only submit to God if they think they'll be tortured for eternity if they don't. And fear of it keeps them from running around murdering each other.

According to three irrefutable Jewish sources; the Jewish Encyclopedia, Encyclopedia Judaica and the Talmud, quoted below, among the יהודים/Yehudim/ιουδαιων/Youdaion/Jews in Israel before and during the time of Jesus there was a belief in a place of everlasting torment of the wicked and they called it both sheol and gehinnom, translated hades and gehenna in the LXX and NT.
…..There were different groups within Judaism; Sadducees, Pharisees, Essenes etc. and there were different beliefs about resurrection, hell etc. That there were differing beliefs does not rebut, refute, change or disprove anything in this post.

So you and others are basically saying Christ's point in this verse is moot, since the soul will not die regardless. Got it.

Matthew 10:28 "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell."

That is exactly what Jesus said in,
Matthew 25:46

Like I said the first time, Jesus condemned the extra-biblical unscriptural teachings of the Scribes and Pharisees etc.

Jesus referred to Isaiah 66:24 when He talked about Gehenna. Since that's the source He was appealing to, it seems the key to understanding what Jesus meant, is in understanding what Isaiah was talking about.

It can be both but not either exclusively.
From the usage of such words in regard to wine skins, sheep, the prodigal, food, gold, etc., where their meaning is clear--Luke 5:37, Luke 15:4-6, Luke 15:24; John 6:27; 1 Peter 1:7, we have no Biblical warrant for creating a different meaning of these words in other places, particularly when the NT presents the condemnation of spirits to Gehenna as everlasting suffering, pain, torment (Mark 9:48; Revelation 14:10-11, etc.), The non-existent do not "suffer" anything, they don't exist.

These Scriptures are false if there is annihilation.
I'm thinking it's not the Scriptures that are false, it is the doctrine of annihilation that is false.

"Annihilation" of human spirits contradicts NT teaching of Mk 9:48; Rev 4:10-11, etc., making it false doctrine.

Nevertheless, it is neither God's view nor the Biblical view, or Jesus would not have had to go to the cross to pay the penalty. He could have just come to heal, teach and forgive.

It would have been a whole easier on Jesus had the orthodox view been God's view.

I don't think orthodoxy denies eternal punishment.
And people who think and feel that way are not born again, and nothing they do will get them to heaven.

The Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection they knew that everybody died young, old, men, women, children, infants and most of the time it did not involve punishment. On two occasions Jesus mentioned a fate worse than death.

1. I have not found much support in the Scriptures for annihilation, and only a bit more for eternal torture in fire.

You see, the pagan Norse believed in a goddess/ogress named "Hel" who ruled over her afterlife real of Helheim, or "House of Hel." The supposed that you spent eternity there if you did not rate Valhalla. We see "hel," "hell" and "helle" in Beowulf, a story set among the pagan Danes, who once ruled a large part of England, the Danelaw. Later, we see "hel" and "hell" in the English 1611 KJV. Now, it's just "hell." Can you see how the pagan "hel" got an extra "l" and was thus Christianized?

1. I have not found much support in the Scriptures for annihilation, and only a bit more for eternal torture in fire.

That is one version. There are others. But they are all irrelevant. What a word might have meant in a different country and different language is largely irrelevant.
In German the word for bright is "hell."
When we say "truck" we think of a large, boxy vehicle for carrying large, heavy loads. Originally truck meant vegetables. And at one time "truck" meant "to have dealings with."
