First of all, the names “Christ” and the “Son of Man” seemed to be bandied about in the Bible. What adds to the confusion is that Jesus speaks of the Son of Man in the third person, so at first glance we may not know who the Son of Man is. The Book of Matthew appears to best answer the question.

First, Jesus in Matthew 26:2 says, “You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.” Well, in two days, Jesus was crucified.

Also, Jesus describes the Son of Man in Matthew 26:63-67 when he is brought before the high priest. The high priest asks Jesus if he is the Christ. Jesus answers him in Verse 64, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

So it is that Jesus is the Son of Man, who is the Christ. The Bible says that Christ, aka the Son of Man, will appear the second time. Hebrews 9:28 says “So Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.” Jesus himself says in Matthew 16:27, “For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.” Taking into consideration the Bible as a whole, the inference is that those who did not act favorably to Jesus will be repaid with eternal punishment, whereas those who have acted favorably will be repaid with eternal life.

Indeed, Jesus says in Matthew 25:31-46 that those who helped those in need have therefore done the same for the Son of Man, aka Jesus, and will have eternal life, and those who haven’t will have eternal punishment.

But when will Jesus appear the second time? No one knows, for he hasn’t told us. He just says in Matthew 24:42-44 that he will come like a thief, who as we know, doesn’t announce when he will rob a household. Just as, in Verse 43, we would be on guard if we knew when a thief would arrive to plunder our household, we should be so on guard all the time, knowing that at any time Jesus would appear to judge us. So, at all times we should present ourselves as being worthy of eternal life, and never let down the guard of our quest for worthiness, lest Lord Jesus catch us “at a bad time.”
