As a Christian who believes what they are told that God is listening and just can't wait to help you, of course frustration should not be the feeling because God is God! He can do anything! That Christian goes on waiting and waiting and waiting. Prays again, maybe saying things a little different. Maybe that Christian thinks God is busy with others and he waits and waits some more. The waiting turns into weeks, months, years while things get worse. Then it hits you...God isn't going to help. You've been deceived by what you've been told. God can answer prayer and there are long ago examples of that in His word but that was "then" and this is "now". He's turned His back on us and has left us to fend for ourselves. That's the point nobody wants to even think about yet the evidence is all around us.

Having Doubts and misunderstandings is very much normal.

We knew very little about God's word before we became Christians. Growing in God is a learning process and some of that process can be painful and confusing. How we fair can be a mixture of how good the teaching is we are exposed to and the example set by our leaders, how good we are at listening, and how much effort we ourselves put in.

But...

I'm am going to have to side with those who said you have lack of Faith. That can be down to a number of reasons. Also discussing it on a Forum instead of taking it to God says much about your prayer life too. Yes - God can answer your questions and show you how things work. And Finally, passing the doubt on to others is generally spreading doubt and knocking everyone else who also has low faith. ;)

Try working for a company and spread some negativity about the management and see how the boss feels about it. The problem is your perspective or lack of it.

John 16:9
The world’s sin is unbelief in me

John 16:9
I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not heal him.” 17“O unbelieving and perverse generation!” Jesus replied. “How long must I remain with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy here to Me.

Even the Disciples had their lack of faith moments so we can be accepting of ours.
But..they went on to learn the lessons and become winners !

QUESTION
If God didn't Intervene with the problem family ( after prayer ) then maybe you have to do it yourself ( directly or indirectly ) Someone does have to do it - so why not you? Are prayers just a means of passing the buck and not taking responsibility yourself?

A story comes to mind...

Jacob and his family are in the land of canaan and there is a famine. Jacob waits until they have run out of food before sending his sons to Egypt. Why did he wait until the last minute ? Was he expecting God to turn up at the last minute and provide food for his family? He was eventually forced to send them to Egypt to get food. The story goes on to show that this was all in God's plan since Joseph was still alive in Egypt and he was to provide food for them during the famine.

Was Jacob acting on presumptuous faith by waiting to the very last minute before acting or was it a lack of taking responsibility for the problem ? The latter is poor leadership.

God's plan was for him to go to Egypt. He was not aware of that plan.

Once again, I find myself at the end of a "slap in the face", "kick in the teeth", or whatever phraseology you wish to use to define this...spending long periods in prayer and fasting for God to intervene in a situation where I can do nothing and the matter just keeps getting worse and worse. Over and over, devout Christians are told to pray about their problems. "God is listening!", they are told. They get their hopes up and then what happens? As an example, lets say right now 100,000 Christians are laying in the hospital with cancer with many, if not all being prayed for. How many of them will suddenly go into remission? You know the answer! If the prayers were answered, many of them would! That fact alone would be proof positive God is listening, God has mercy and God healed them! You know what will happen. Maybe a few will go into remission and those few are simply NOT proof God answered those prayers. Christians are given the pep talk to pray and they do with the end result being no answer or things get worse. Those Christians go away discouraged, feeling deceived or like me, feel as I wasted my time because He wasn't about to lift a finger in the first place. Lets skip the usual Christian platitudes here. How do we know God even cares about us? As a father, if I had a son and he asked me for help, I'd be there. I'd do something. There would be no doubt in my son's mind I heard him. God may have heard and answered prayers of a few select people who were part of the establishment of mankind thru the history of the Bible, but how about NOW? I've been in this Christian life long enough now to realize most if not all of your praying is an exercise in futility. You may make yourself feel good for a few minutes, but that's about all will happen. I've swallowed the platitudes, read the books, heard the preachers. God is not listening. God does not care about our situations (meaning legitimate matters, not praying for a $200,000 car), we have been left alone here and He has shown very convincing evidence He is playing "hands off".

I believe this is where faith kicks in that "God's will" is in control and not ours. Once we feel that our demands of Him are more superior than His will for us, we have
quenched the Holy Spirit.

When you pray there is not waiting, and no frustration. Only joy and praise. When you pray believe that you have received...and you will receive....is what Jesus said. Therefore there is no concept of waiting....no need for frustration.. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise. We have not because we ask not.......even when we think we are asking.....

A lot of posters have made great posts regarding this topic.
The very first thing that came to my mind was Matthew 26:39 (KJV)
And he went a little farther, and fell on his face , and prayed , saying, O my Father, if it be possible , let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will , but as thou wilt.

That was one of three prayers regarding the same request by Jesus Himself due to what was getting ready to happened .

Can you imagine if the cup were to pass from Him.

All prayer is answered.
Not all prayer is answered in the manner we would like .
We don't know the big picture .
As brother Billy Graham was known to say , " I don't know what the future holds , but I know who holds the future ". (Insert Amen!!! here)

As you can see with the prayer of Jesus , He was
1. Humble
2. Earnest
3. Faithful
He was accepting of whatever the outcome would be.
... not as I will, but as thou wilt...

I truly believe God knows what is best for us and have faith that He does answer prayers according to His will , not ours. Which is a great thing.

He wants us to pray. He wants to have communication with Him daily.

It is hard to sin while praying (not impossible though).
But, sin makes it hard to pray .

I say this not directed at anyone in general and certainly not the OP whatsoever, but rather in general.
Always be faithful, always be showered with prayer.

God answers prayers .

All glory be to God now and forever.
Amen!

Yet God is not like Man. I believe he gives you what you ask for all the time......and you learn what to ask for after getting what you asked for......eventually you will learn to ask for nothing..... but it is a process......one hindered by the thought that God says "No," or that if you do what He says to do, you are making Him a vending machine.
Incorrect. If you ask God for 1 million dollars, you're not automatically getting it. God does say no at times, and for good reasons. Are you really saying God gives us whatever we ask for?

Over and over, devout Christians are told to pray about their problems. "God is listening!", they are told. They get their hopes up and then what happens?

good question. Let's step back and take a look.

but before that - one more quote from you

As an example, lets say right now 100,000 Christians are laying in the hospital with cancer with many, if not all being prayed for. How many of them will suddenly go into remission? You know the answer! If the prayers were answered, many of them would! That fact alone would be proof positive God is listening, God has mercy and God healed them! You know what will happen. Maybe a few will go into remission and those few are simply NOT proof God answered those prayers. Christians are given the pep talk to pray and they do with the end result being no answer or things get worse.

Now an objective - science base - study of the facts.

Science Proves the Healing Power of Prayer

“Studies have shown prayer can prevent people from getting sick — and when they do get sick, prayer can help them get better faster,” Duke University’s Harold G. Koenig, M.D., tells Newsmax Health.

An exhaustive analysis of more than 1,500 reputable medical studies “indicates people who are more religious and pray more have better mental and physical health,” Dr. Koenig says.

but then you say this -

Those Christians go away discouraged, feeling deceived or like me, feel as I wasted my time because He wasn't about to lift a finger in the first place. Lets skip the usual Christian platitudes here. How do we know God even cares about us? As a father, if I had a son and he asked me for help, I'd be there. I'd do something. There would be no doubt in my son's mind I heard him. God may have heard and answered prayers of a few select people who were part of the establishment of mankind thru the history of the Bible, but how about NOW? No doubt many folks are not getting the big "yes" answer they are looking for.

But then -- all the Angels in heaven get their "yes", and all those sinless beings in the rest of the universe have a wonderful paradise of harmony with God, praise and eternal life But what about us here?

And what about Christ when He came here? He got crucified after He prayed "FATHER if it be possible let this cup pass from Me - nevertheless not my will, but Thy will be done".

Still - a lot of miracles happened for him, and for Peter for Paul.. Even though in the end all of them get killed by the bad guys. And what about the Apostle John? He did not get killed by the bad guys - even though they tried. But still even John got killed -- by old age.

And what about the 3 friends of Daniel in the fiery furnace - sure they did not get killed by the furnace - but still... they are all dead now.. they all got killed anyway.

Question: if half the time - you live like a member of the devil's tribe - do you get all the same blessings as the Apostles in this life? You know - healing the sick, casting out demons, raising the dead? I think we all know that answer.

What about when a loved one gets sick and dies and you prayed for them? Dorcas got sick and died then Peter came and she was raised from the dead. After which - she lived for a while - then died again.

Lazarus got sick and died - then Jesus raised him from the dead... after which he lived for a while and died again.

Did you read ANYTHING I posted? Did I say the problem I cannot resolve is money??? Again, I have to shake my head in disbelief. Skip thru any of the concepts I stated and head straight to me and blame me! Is that what this is all about? FYI I've been involved in Christianity a long time including prison ministry, personal counseling and door-to-door evangelism. I've had people ask me questions and not once did I turn the question or subject matter around and blame them! Nor did I say anything unless I heard or read everything they had to say and made perfectly sure my response was right to the point of their inquiry.

Yes, Im saying it and The bible says it as well. "Ask and you shall receive" "Try me and see if I will not open the windows of heaven..." etc.....

I have asked for money before and recieved it.......however, I would not suggest that others do this. Besides...money is not really what most people desire....it is the thing the money can buy....so why not ask for that instead? I've learned many things from receiving what I asked for.....especially the things I received that did more harm than good. Now what could I learn from receiving NO's except what the OP'er has learned? How is this helpful to anyone?

You are not far off.....It is not wise to ask God for your inheritance to waste....but if you desire it, He will give it.....and watch you waste it away and come to your senses on your own......and when you return, you are wiser and He receives you all the same......

Yes, that’s in 1st Addendums 20:13. And Jesus said “Pray for all sick people so that God will heal them .”

Dear Jim Electronic, I've known plenty of people who died of cancer, and their families who prayed for God to heal them. It didn't happen. They in turn comfort themselves, saying it was just their turn. It was God's will. I don't accept that necessarily! I believe God has given answers to being healed of cancer, but this country suppresses those answers. In 1931, Nobel Peace Prize was won by Dr. Otto Warburg for discovering that cancer cannot live in an alkaline state. Their are plenty of people today, who even had stage four pancreatic cancer being healed by an alkaline diet. How well did the Lord peg it, "My people die from lack of knowledge." I too, had stomach cancer, but I was healed not through diet, but by His grace. Part of prayer is listening to Him when He speaks. An example of this is when I once when to pick up a sister to take her to a Wednesday night service, but she invited me in to pray for her friend, Rosy. Rosy had a tumor about the size of a softball on her neck. As I went to pray for her, the Lord spoke to me. "Strengthen her faith!" I shared with her, and the Lord spoke again, " Lay your hands on the tumor, for I'm going to heal her." Rosy passed out after I prayed, only to wake up the next day with the tumor gone. Too many Christians think that quoting Bible verses is the answer to most of our prayers, but to hear Him speak directly by His Spirit is one of my greatest treasures in serving the Living God, my Lord Jesus. I can only hope that you would know by experience His voice that fills you with wisdom and understanding.
"
The Lord Jesus, the Blessed One, the Giver of Life, fed me bread from heaven, and gave me understanding to drink. He filled me with purpose, I as I breathed in the light of His Holy Spirit. He clothed with the garments of salvation. To love what is good and to despise wickedness was woven into the fabric of my holy garments. He taught me to persevere, that the days are growing darker, and times of trouble are approaching, but He assured me, that safety would be numbered among the righteous; among those who abide in His Light." Maybe the problem is that you are praying and fasting for something that God has already provided to the Church. Jesus never prayed for sick people; He commanded healing by telling them to take up their bed and walk, or their faith has made them whole, or to go home because the guy's servant was well. The instructions that Jesus gave to the 70 who went out was to "heal the sick". When Peter and John encountered the lame man in Act 3, they did not stop and have a prayer meeting, they went to the man and said, "In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!" Then they helped him to his feet.

The big problem why the Church in general is powerless to heal the sick is that (1) they don't know what God's will is and so they are double-minded about it and cannot use their faith. (2) Because when Jesus preached the Kingdom of God, miracles were an integral part of it, and this carried on through the Book of Acts. These days the Church tries to preach the words of the Gospel without the signs and wonders, and so they are preaching only half a Kingdom of God, and there is no such thing. The true Gospel is the Word incorporated with miracles of healing and other signs and wonders. (3) A theologian, believing the pagan philosophers Aristotle and Plato over and above the Bible, put forward Cessationist doctrine, which is promulgated by many church groups.

So, get up off your knees and believe the Bible! The Bible says, "These signs shall follow those who believe...they shall lay lands of the sick and they shall recover." If you have enough faith to say, "Jesus heals you." to any person with a medical condition who comes across your path, then you are being obedient to the command of Jesus to heal the sick, and you will be acting out of obedience and trusting the Lord for the results.

Who knows what might happen if you were prepared to look like a fool for Christ, start launching out in faith and obedience? If you don't, you will never know.

If you really want to understand about how powerful prayers are......
I would suggest reading about near death experience accounts......
a high percentage of people who come back from a brush with death have been shown
that their resurrection was largely caused by people praying for them.......

For example......

another good example is little Colton Burpo.....

OP ... I think that perhaps you have misunderstandings. First, take a look at 2 Corinthians 11:23-29.

In those verses the Apostle Paul describes everything he went through. And there is no over-exaggeration there.

But after that suffering ... what? Later he was imprisoned in the worst jail in Rome, beaten and flogged more. Then he was led out alone, only with soldiers, and beheaded in a grisly execution.

That was Paul's path in faith. That was what God gave him.

Should we ask for more?

Perhaps you really need to think about this. And yet this same Apostle also wrote 1 Corinthians 13.

I think that today churches are soft-peddling the message of Christ. We are being fed watery soup, and promises of prosperity. It's not all what was happening to the first Christians .. who lived after Christ was crucified.

Blessings!!

I have cancer and don’t know how much time I have left sojourning here on the earthly pilgrimage. I pray for the day and day ahead always remembering Jesus Christ is my Hope and Treasure.

There’s loads many more wise than I am can speak of prayer and how we pray knowing we ask according to the will of God, His will be done. My wonderful brother @Southernscotty is a pastor and has more experience than I and can be of more help.

However, never take your eye off the prize. In the best of times and especially the worst of times we keep focused on Christ. We glorify Him and praise Him as we draw the breath He gives us and with that breath we worship Him.

At my very worst a few years ago when my body was weak, feverish from chemo treatments I could not eat for 5 days. I could only sip water, hardly slept and could not talk nor even read because anything I did hurt. I could not concentrate. A close brother in Christ listened to me. Then said two words. “Glorify Him.”

All I could remember was a childhood prayer the Sanctus which I offered:

“Holy, holy, holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are filled with your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord,
in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest,
hosanna in the highest.”

Reminded of the Majesty and Glory of God I was comforted knowing how mighty and powerful He is. Knowing my God and my Savior has made it all and is above all.

I hope this brings you comfort.

In His Name

I think a better analogy is think of God's work as being His desire to work through His Church, the Body of Christ, in what are otherwise ordinary, moral human ways. So, we have to question something here: WHEN and WHY was it that Christians began to think that the main purpose of prayer ... was to obtain remedies from God for just anything and whatever ails them?
Because the modern term for prayer is masterminding and the ancient meaning is sloth. The synopsis of the Lord's Prayer according to ethical ideals of relationship are between the material realm (the invisible) and the spiritual realm. (the invisible)

Blessings!!
That's been infiltrating the churches for 14 years that I know of. The Pentecost church that I was going to got a new pastor that the old crows used to just hate. ( Holy Righteousness would be a better term. On the projector there was pictures of money floating. Seriously. The only reason they stayed was so not to give free reign to the thieves. I quite going there because the filth stank. The free kitchen we had was also abused.

We pray because its a sign of faith. It doesn't mean it will be a yes answer to it. Sometimes its a no. And sometimes its a "Wait" because God is waiting for something on our end to change.

In my case I was so obsessed with finding love that it wasn't until I stopped obsessing over it that God put my wife into my life.

Often christians seem to think God is a genie who grants wishes. He's not. He has plans to better us. Now some will say "Why am I not better then?". Could be you have taken your own route in life and ignored His route. Maybe He's waiting for you to reset your GPS and go down the right route. In many cases we can be off course and he tries to redirect us but we still ignore/miss the turn.

And lets be honest, without faith then we would just have a God who answers everything with a yes (like a genie) and EVERYONE would become saved because they would see proof of Gods existence. By not having a yes answer to everything it means people have to have faith.

We also must remember God created us perfect. But Adam and Eve screwed it up for everyone. So now bad things and sin happens. Now one could argue "Why should I pay for their sins?". Well its like asking "Why do I have to pay for car insurance just because others get into wrecks?". The time is already past. It doesn't matter why at this point. Your in the here and now.

At the end of it all He still keeps his promise of heaven for those who truly believed.
