In the New Testament, we are warned that loving things more than we love God will lead to suffering and trouble. One of the things that people tend to love in this world is money. The Scriptures warn that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. We can see that in our own society today, where the pursuit of wealth the building of great stores of wealth by a few individuals sees the society as a whole suffer. Many Christians are inclined to say that a man or a woman has a right to the fruit of their own labours. They mean by that that the person should be able to keep whatever wealth they earn by whatever means they earn it, as long as those means are lawful. But now we see some individuals, a few, who hold hundreds of billions of dollars in personal wealth while others within their own country are living in poverty and don't have a roof over the head in winter, and can't feed and keep their family healthy with medicines because of the prices that are charged for the medicines and for medical cover and for rent and for all the other matters that are essential to living in society. If Christ were our law giver, what kind of laws do you think we would have about wealth and about helping the poor?
In our capitalist thinking, the poor are often regarded as kind of evolutionarily unfit, unfit to survive in our society. Can a Christian hold a view like that?
