• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

A little bit about me:
For a long time, I considered myself an Athiest, I didnt beleive in God and I cringed at people who would talk about God, saying stuff like "I love God", "God is our saviour".....I never saw why people believed such dumb things....

But now, things are different.
Im a hypocondriac, im extremely underweight (my bmi is at zero), and have had various, rather disabling symptoms (also I recently went to the hospital for a "mental health crisis").
Because of my mental health disorder, I think about death A LOT more than I used to....which brings me to where we are right now.

I recently started reseacrhing stuff about religion, asking questions such as "does God really exist?", "Does he think badly of me?", etc.
At first I was unsure, but now I feel like there is some God out there......

Now, whenever someone metions their connection with God, and how happy he makes them feel and how merciful he is....I start crying. They arent tears of sadness though. Im not scared, sad or annoyed.....I dont know what I feel, but I get goosebumps and start sobbing. I dont know why, does anyone have an explaination for this.....why has my veiws changed from thinking religion is cringy to getting all choked up over it????

If anyone has any answers, please write one!

It is really difficult to know. Feelings and emotions can be deceptive and difficult to interpret.

One thing I know is this, that your change of views from not interested to even slightly curious is the Holy Spirit calling you. God is patient with each of us, not wanting us to perish but to come to repentance.

Take some time and ask God what it means. Even as an unbeliever God will answer the prayer that desires to know more about him, and make no mistake, you will know when God answers so don't be deceived by the "well maybe that was God" answering me type responses.

Just ask. He is more willing to answer than we are to ask. ~ Smith Wigglesworth

You are crying because God is touching your heart with His truth. He created you and loves you more than you could ever imagine. So when you hear about Him it causes your heart to weep because you were created for Him and by Him. He's reaching out to you and He wants you to accept Him, He is drawing you in and trying to show you His love. He wants you to accept Him and let Him come live in your heart, that is what you feel.

The Holy Spirit is touching you and bringing you to the reality that He truly is the Almighty God that can save you, heal you and set you free no matter what you face in life, He will always be there and be with you. Just ask Him to come into your heart, forgive you of your sins, cleanse you and set you free. Ask Him to be your Savoir and Lord of all, to take over your life and give you peace.

It's hard to say exactly. It could be conviction of sin. It can be a terrible thing to encounter the living God. When Peter realized that he was standing in the presence of God he said: "Depart from me Lord, for I am a sinful man." (Luke 5:8). But this kind of grief/fear can be a very positive thing. When we begin to encounter the purity and holiness of God, naturally we will become more aware of our own impurity and sinfulness. At first this should alarm us. What we need at this point is the good news of the gospel that God has not drawn near to judge us, but to save us by giving us his son Jesus to stand in our place and pay for our sins. Though we are sinful and impure we may have fellowship with a holy God. Hope this helps point you in the right direction.

An emotion like the way you describe it happened to me too.

This emotion is a wonderful sign I think, because I think it likely means that your heart/soul wants to connect with Him, and that is exactly what He requires of us to first truly seek and find Him.

13 "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
14 I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity....."
(Jeremiah chap 29)

And Christ said more --

7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

9 “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!"

Christ, our Lord, in Matthew chap 7

i dont really think i can agree, as mentioned before...these arent tears of sadness, anger, guilt or frustration....they just come without a word. there is word i need to desribe it but as far as i know there isnt one. in a previous reply i mentioned that its a sort of happy-sad meloncholy feeling. the same feeling you get when looking back on a childhood memory. youre so glad it happened, but you wish you were there doing all over again, its a similar feeling i suppose.....yet idk the cause
