The Aramaic Bible Targums Chapter 1:82-88, “Then it was said to Moses: ‘Ascend to the firmament and I will give you two tablets of stone, hewn from the sapphire of the throne of My glory, gleaming like fine gold, arranged in lines and written by My finger. Engraved on them are the Ten Words, refined more than silver that has been refined in seven times seven [ways]-that is the sum.”

We are told in Parashah Mishpatim (Exodus: 24:10) that Moshe beheld the throne of God: "...and under His feet was something like a sapphire brick." This unusual object is later divided into two separate 'stones' and brought down as the shnei luchot (or 'two tablets' of the covenant). Sapphire Magen David : The Sapphire Cube

This article goes on to show more approaches to the appropriateness of the concept that the Ten Commandments were written on sapphire cubes.

Yeah this is you know a very beautiful thing indeed and a great example of how we visualize something a certain way based on say Cecil B. DeMille's movies, and those are fine and more than fine really, but the thing is God has a better version of everything.

Ez 1:26 And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it.

Ez 10:1 Then I looked, and behold, in the expanse that was over the heads of the cherubim something like a sapphire stone, in appearance resembling a throne, appeared above them.

Exodus 31:18 confirms they were written by the finger of God:

Ex 31:18 When He had finished speaking with him upon Mount Sinai, He gave Moses the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written by the finger of God.

Exodus 32:15-16 states, Then Moses turned and went down from the mountain with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, tablets which were written on both sides; they were written on one side and the other. And the tablets were God's work, and the writing was God's writing engraved on the tablets.

Now for something interesting...

Targums Chapter 1:82-88, Then it was said to Moses: ‘Ascend to the firmament and I will give you two tablets of stone, hewn from the sapphire of the throne of My glory, gleaming like fine gold, arranged in lines and written by My finger. Engraved on them are the Ten Words, refined more than silver that has been refined in seven times seven [ways]-that is the sum.
pure is the what I saw.

Sefer Yetzirah 1:1 “He created His universe
...with three books
(SePhaRim)

...with text [SePheR]
...with number [SePhaR]
and with story (communication) [SiPpuR]

These three 'books' allude to the three dimensions of the primordial torah that was made of SaPphiRe.
I was reading this thread and trying to figure out why they would say the tablets were made out of sapphire. I think you are on to something with this post.
Sapphire is 'spyr' and comes from 'spr' which means, looking at the other words 'spr': to count, to be counted, recount, enumerator, scribe, inscribe, score with a mark, numbering, writing/ a book, etc.
So it looks like the root of sapphire all has to do with counting, writing, inscribing, and I'm thinking that is where they got the idea that the tablets were made out of sapphire. (I don't recall anywhere that it's actually written in the Torah that the tablets were made of sapphire, but correct me if I am wrong)

So pondering this, do the uses of the word sapphire -spyr- in the bible have any connections to counting, writing, inscribing?
And what are the connections to "the book", if any?
(Exo 32:32-33) Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin--; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written. And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.

I'm pondering this verse first:
Isa 54:11 O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colours, and lay thy foundations with sapphires.
Are these sapphire foundation stones engraved gems (people)? Their hearts engraved with the Law? Kind of like the pillars are written upon?
Rev 3:12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.

Maybe...
Eph 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

See Exodus 24:10
Looking at one of the commentaries I have it says:
"And the Targum of Jonathan understands it of the colour, and not of the form of the sapphire, and renders it, the white sapphire; and so do some Jewish writers (w); though the colour of the sapphire is azure, or sky coloured, with which agrees what follows:
and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness; and Ruaeus (x) says, the sapphire is sky coloured, and some of them shine and sparkle with golden points or spots, and are reckoned the best sapphires; so that this represents the heaven as quite clear and serene, bespangled with stars; and as the heavens, covered with clouds, may denote the displeasure of God, so a serene heaven his favour and good will, and in such an amiable light was he now beheld." (John Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible)

Maybe the names of the nobles (Ex. 24:11) are written on the sapphire? Yeshua did say to the 70 He sent out, when they returned, that their names were written in Heaven. He didn't say where in Heaven! (Luke 10:20)

Note there were two tablets written on BOTH sides. It is thought that the whole Law was written on the two tablets, both sides. Ex. 24:12 & 32:15-16 .
