  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Like Johan.
He's awesome - and led a peer reviewed team of climate scientists and now summarises their work! He's also the world's leading authority on planetary boundaries, and it's such a luminary on it David Attenborough had him on the breaking boundaries series.

Your dismiss all of him was typical of the quality of all your posts. Someone somewhere said something about his methods. So there! Can't listen to him! A random dude on the internet told me....

Climate scientist peer review is kinda like parapsychologist peer review.

Here's a joke I found online:

We bald men don't spend all our time shampooing and rinsing our hair. It's one of the many selfless acts we bald men perform every day to make our world a better place. The bald also don't have use for plastic combs, or no hair dryers either so that's gotta save on electricity. Come on. We have got to go bald - all of us. Walking around with a full head of hair is like driving an SUV or dumping toxic sludge into a river. It's irresponsible. Hey, you hair people, shame on you!

My prescription for you living with "your truth" as you see the world start to change is to say this phrase above three times before bed. Have a chocolate cookie and a nice mug of warm milk.

As the Oracle in the Matrix said, "...eat the cookie - and pretty soon you'll feel right as rain."

According to the psychologists the tendency to oppose or reject things one does not understand is often linked to several overlapping concepts.

(1) Cognitive Dissonance: This refers to the mental discomfort experienced when holding two conflicting beliefs or encountering information that contradicts existing beliefs. People may reject unfamiliar ideas to reduce this discomfort.

(2) Ambivalence: A state of having mixed or contradictory feelings toward something. While not exactly opposition, ambivalence can lead to indecision or resistance when faced with unfamiliar concepts.

(3) Reactance: A motivational reaction to offers, persons, rules, or regulations that threaten or eliminate specific behavioral freedoms. People may oppose unfamiliar ideas simply because they feel their autonomy is being challenged.

(4) Confirmation Bias: The tendency to favor information that confirms existing beliefs and ignore or reject contradictory evidence. This can lead to opposition toward unfamiliar or complex ideas.

(5) Epistemic Closure: A term used in political psychology to describe when individuals reject new information that conflicts with their worldview, effectively "closing off" their belief system.

(6) The Dunning-Kruger Effect: A cognitive bias where individuals with low ability at a task overestimate their ability. This can manifest as confident rejection of complex or unfamiliar ideas due to a lack of understanding.

I hear you. We can probably amalgamate them into the following acronym that I'll pick for no particular reason: MAGA ;)

M – Motivated Reasoning
Combines cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias. People interpret information in ways that protect their identity or prior beliefs.

A – Arrogant Ignorance
Captures the Dunning–Kruger effect — confidently rejecting expertise while lacking real understanding.

G – Groupthink
A form of epistemic closure, where belonging to an ideological tribe discourages dissent or independent thinking.

A – Avoidance of Dissonance
Returning to cognitive dissonance, this describes the active resistance to evidence that threatens one’s worldview.

May I equally prescribe something?

Say this three times before bed:

Genesis 8:22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.
