  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I want both. Corner stores in the cities, and downtowns, and big box stores in the suburbs. That's the way it should be.

But there's no reason why our billions of American dollars should be funneled out of this country, so that terrorists and dictators can live in splendor, while so many here live in squalor.
How can I walk to a big box store, let alone needing to walk to two or three big box stores. These places are impossible without cars. I live in a place now where I can walk for a considerable amount of necessities. But before this home it was a 15 minute drive for EVERYTHING. Growing up there were some commercial streets served by busses where you could buy anything and everything.

Suburban life is dictated by the planning that presumed everyone would have a car. So you can’t live in suburbia without a car - by design.

Does this plan to nationalize North American oil production also include compelling redevelopment of US cities?
What plan to nationalize North American oil production are you referring to?

The one proposed in this thread starting with post #3.

Nationalizing it was brought up by another poster, not me, in post #29. I "liked" that post because of how it hinted toward preparedness.

Preparedness, when totally depending on dictators and terrorists, 100%, is always a good idea. You never know what they'll do. We are in an unnecessarily vulnerable position.

It's the only way to get what you want. It's farcical to think that US oil companies will cut themselves off from the world market and accept lower profits.

Getting back to the other question, does this plan also include forcing investment in cities such as Gary?

What makes you think they would be accepting lower profits? They would be ramping up oil production like never seen before - which equals higher profits right off the bat. And Canadian companies too.

Supply and demand would be dictating profits. It would be a whole new arena, with unlimited possibilities.

Reality.

Ramping up production, I am guessing companies would be compelled to open up wells they are not currently using, and forbidding exports would mean lower profits. Especially when you add in the costs of bringing new capacity on line.

The oil companies have it the way they want it. Getting them to align their interests with the idea of providing cheap gas to US consumers only would be possible if they were forbidden from doing otherwise. Hence nationalization.

Supply and demand would be dictating profits.

Supply and demand in two countries with no access to the world market.

It would be a whole new arena, with unlimited possibilities.

Unlimited possibilities, access to the world market, pick one.

I think you're missing the obvious here... We don't even have enough of the sweet kind of crude here to be 100% self-sufficient. So, it doesn't make any sense to say there is some kind of loss by selling here at home as opposed to overseas, when considering we can only produce so much to begin with... And we need every bit available here that we have. There was never even a remote possibility that selling overseas could generate more profits to begin with.

...This is where Canada comes in. With them, and their ample amounts of the sweet kind of crude, which is currently untapped, it would complete the process in a dynamic way.

So we're talking about even higher gas prices.

Just the US? We invading Canada and making them a vassal state pumping us oil that they don't get to use?

When do the Central American unsullied armies come into use?

So we're talking about even higher gas prices.

It would be lower gas prices, because we already refine it here, so we have the equipment. But the source will be local, and not shipped across the globe on expensive barges that total billions of dollars themselves, with underwater pipelines (because barges don't dock, they pump crude from miles out at sea) that were super-expensive to build, and require maintenance which has been driving up costs.

Without all this overhead, and with mere pipeline and rail here, we can cut a lot of costs off right at the top.

There is not enough to go around, per post 49, but the price is going to somehow be lower with demand outstripping supply?

Canada. Our partner, our friend.

The US is probably about 90% capable of self-sufficiency, but Canada has more than we do with only a fraction of the people, and thus only a fraction of the need for it.

...But they will become rich from us.

Will sell us oil at below market value because we said please?

So because we don't know, we shouldn't try?

Are you okay with $10.00 a gallon by Christmas? So Putin can make up for his war losses as he invades Ukraine?

Maybe it's time to start moving forward, rather than remaining stagnant, and just accepting hostile people taking advantage of us. I don’t want to be their cash cow, while being taken advantage of at the same time.

Its important to know what's going to happen before implementing policy, especially radical ones.

well, it seems like your posts are purporting every worst case scenario possible, but never pause to see what good could might be lying in wait.
