  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Jesus prophesied that we would be keeping the Sabbath until He returns in Matthew 24

The law is only the 10, in your view?

The 10 is the "short list" (without great detail) ..... Jesus taught a lot more about their depth of meaning (a lot of details).

Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart (1-4 of the 10), and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself (6-10 of the 10).

I see. But nothing else out of the law of Moses?

If the book of the law was nailed to the cross, then the ten commandments were nailed to the cross; for they were all in that book, word for word; and the doing away of the book did them away also. Whoever makes such an assertion, has certainly been very heedless in his reading of the book.

It is not true.

The ten commandments nowhere appear in the books of Moses in legislative form; that is, in a form to drive their authority in any degree from the book. They are but once recorded in set form, as God spoke them, and that is in Exodus 20:3-17. And this is historical and not legislative; it is simply a narrative that God did come down and give that law from Sinai with his own voice; but the law derived no authority from this narrative. Its authority rested upon the fact that it had been spoken by God, and written with his finger upon the tables of stone, and deposited in the holiest spot of the most holy place of the sanctuary.

And though every copy of the book containing this narrative had been destroyed and put out of existence, it would not have affected in the least the fact of the promulgation of that law, nor have touched the tables containing the legislative transcript of the same. What is here stated will apply also to Moses’ rehearsal and paraphrase of the law forty years later, as recorded in Deuteronomy 5:6-21.

With the law of Moses (those written by Moses) it was not so. That was promulgated through the book, and its authority was derived from that record. It had no position elsewhere, and when that handwriting was nailed to the cross, nothing of it longer remained.

This is clearly shown by what law was placed IN the ark (tablets of stone - never changing) and which law was placed OUTSIDE if the ark. That which Moses wrote with His own handwriting (done away with) and it was those laws that were nailed to the cross.

Okay... so the law is the ten commandments plus all the teachings of Jesus. Thank you for your answers.

I am not teaching works by Salvation; I believe in obedience through faith. Through faith we obey what God asks, not to be saved because we have faith in God and obey what He ask because we know God would only ask us to do something that is for our own good.

I believe we need to rest in Christ which is shown through our obedience to Him.

In particular Hebrews 4:9-10 is referring to the rest in Christ when we cease from our work on the seventh day (Sabbath) through faith. We need to keep the Sabbath holy to receive the rest in Christ and not through disobedience which is shown in Hebrews 4:6
We keep the Sabbath holy because of the Rest that is in Christ. We do not keep the Sabbath holy to receive the rest that is in Christ. We can keep nothing holy without first receiving the rest that is in Christ.

The Sabbath is about spending time with God, doing His ways on His holy day how is that not the way to God? The Sabbath is way more than just ceasing from working and taking a nap. We are called to keep the Sabbath holy Exodus 20:9 and in doing so that is a day of worship Lev 23:3, Isaiah 66:23 and communion with God on His blessed and holy day doing His way, all of our thoughts are on Jesus when we keep His Sabbath holy. Isaiah 58:13
And we can only keep the Sabbath Holy through the rest in Christ.

I don't know of any Adventist who does not believe Hebrews 4 is not about keeping the Sabbath and the rest in Christ.
Me either. But that is not what you said that needed addressed. You said, "We need to keep the Sabbath holy to receive the rest in Christ". That is salvation by works. And that is what no SDA leader through the General Conference knowing teaches.

God does not force us to obey, it's something God asks us all throughout the scripture to keep the Sabbath holy, don't defile my Sabbath, we need to take the first step in obedience to Him through faith, which He then gives us the power to obey, God will never force us to obey Him. Hebrews 4:9-10 is absolutely about keeping the Sabbath - rest from our works on the seventh day- takes us right to creation Genesis 2:1-3 and the Sabbath commandment Exodus 20:8-11
Never said anything different.

Salvation through works is depending on our work to save us, we cannot save ourselves, only God can which is why we depend on what He asks of us and not depend on what we think is right. Keeping the commandments won't save anyone, it is obedience though faith and being transformed by the Spirit so we want to keep the commandments of God because we love God and have faith in what He asks.
But you said, "We need to keep the Sabbath holy to receive the rest in Christ" The rest which is our salvation. The Rest that saves.

What you seem to be indicating is that we do not need to be obedient to Christ to receive His rest, which I do not see Hebrews 4:1-11 saying. Hebrews 4:6 Christ offers rest to everyone, but not everyone accepts this gift which is shown by obedience. Hebrews 4 is a call to obedience through faith and in particular the Sabbath as shown in Hebrews 4:4, Hebrews 4:9-10
Right we need to receive Christ's rest in order to be obedient and stay obedient. We can't do it on our own for one and the second thing is we all made mistakes in the past so we need our sins purged and to be reconciled.

So what does Hebrews says is entailed in Christ's rest which is called the Gospel in Hebrews 4:2?
Starting in chapter 1 and 2 of Hebrews we find that our sins our purged and we have been sanctified. And that we have been delivered and are no longer subject to bondage nor should we fear death. Because Satan has been defeated and We have been reconciled. And now when we are tempted Jesus is there to help us through it. He is a faithful High Priest over His house which we are. His House, the Household of God, His Temple with His Spirit, Jesus Christ being the cheif corner stone. Partakers of Christ if we hold fast this confidence in Him. Using His help when we are tempted firm unto the end. So today listen to His voice. Let's not Harden our heart as in the rebellion. For it is He that works in us both to will and do His good pleasure. So neglect not such a great salvation. For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. By willfully sinning and doing despite to the Spirit of Grace.

What I have said is obedience through faith and love. Faith leads us to obey what Gods' Word says. God changes our hearts to love which leads us to obey. This is the new covenant promise (Jeremiah 31:31-34 and Hebrews 8:10-12) but we need to cooperate with God.

We enter into Gods' rest (Sabbath) by believing and obeying Gods Word including and keeping the Sabbath commandment. We can not enter into the rest in Christ by being disobedient. Faith and obedience go hand in hand just like love and obedience to God.

I am not teaching salvation by works, but righteousness by faith.

Yes you are. Christ rest is how we obey. It is through His Spirit, His Word, the law in our hearts and minds that we obey. We are changed. We can not obey without Christ. This is the rest in which He offers us. By saying We do His commandments to enter into His rest. As you did above. We are saying That we are doing something to be saved. That is salvation by works. We rest in Him to do His commandments. Then if we do not pay heed to his working in us then we are not partaking of Christ and His rest. And he will leave us to our own.

And at this point I don’t think you are reading any of the posts you are responding to but in part. You responded to quickly. If you are then I hope there is some type of cognitive issue and not a spiritual one. But I will pray for both.

We are saved by grace through faith. You cannot separate faith from obeying God’s Word. Love leads us to obedience to God’s law and faith leads us into Gods' rest and Sabbath keeping by believing and following Gods Word. God does write His laws in our hearts and minds but we still have to cooperate with God through believing and following His Word.

Hebrews 4:6 Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience,

What did they disobey?

Ezekiel 20: 13 Yet the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness; they did not walk in My statutes; they despised My judgments, ‘which, if a man does, he shall live by them’; and they greatly defiled My Sabbaths. Then I said I would pour out My fury on them in the wilderness, to consume them.

Ezekiel 20:21 “Notwithstanding, the children rebelled against Me; they did not walk in My statutes, and were not careful to observe My judgments, ‘which, if a man does, he shall live by them’; but they profaned My Sabbaths. Then I said I would pour out My fury on them and fulfill My anger against them in the wilderness.

Looks like we may have to agree to disagree. Jesus is our righteous Judge so I am going to leave it in His hands. God bless.

We are saved by grace through faith.
Yes but that is not the same as saying we must keep the Sabbath to have Christ’s rest. Christ rest is the Gospel. It is our union with Him and what we live through as Christians. It is what makes us Christians.
You cannot separate faith from obeying God’s Word.
Right. Faith comes from the change the Lord has placed on our heart. It is of the rest in which we have that is of Christ that enables us to obey God. For God has said, righteousness says this, Say not in thine heart, bring Christ down from above or up from the deep. But what saith righteousness? The word is nigh thee in thine heart and in thy mouth, that thou may do it. That is the Faith in which we preach. (Deut 30:14; Rom6-8)
Love leads us to obedience to God’s law and faith leads us into Gods' rest and Sabbath keeping by believing and following Gods Word. God does write His laws in our hearts and minds but we still have to cooperate with God through believing and following His Word.
No, God’s rest in Christ through His love leads us to a loving obedience. Christ’s Spirit through Love leads us to obey lovingly. We don’t obey to be saved we obey because we are. [SE]

Perhaps as Christians if we can please stop with the name-calling? I would sure appreciate it and in scripture it tells us not to judge each other, its one thing to point out scripture for consideration than to place judgement on someone spiritually when only God knows the heart.

The scripture in Hebrews 4 shows us the gospel is preached and those who have faith and believe enter into His rest, it goes on to say those who were disobedient did not enter into His rest. Faith/belief and obedience are interchangeable here. Those who were disobedient do not enter into His rest Hebrews 4:6 so I do not see how you are coming up with that we can be disobedient and receive the rest in Christ. And in particular the Sabbath which is what this passage is calling us to keep. Hebrews 4:4, Hebrews 4:9-10

I never said we obey to be saved and you will never find a quote of me saying this, we obey because we love and have faith in what God asks of us. God writes His laws in our hearts and minds and the devil wants us to change our minds on what God placed there, but through our obedience and love to God, we keep what He has placed intact.

No one has judge your heart. And no one has called you a name. What was said was since you are going off on a tangent as if I am saying it is ok to be disobedient than you are apparently not reading the post and or have a cognitive issue. With that being said I reported the post anyway. Because it could be a forum violation or I could be violating the standards that I am suppose to uphold as an Ambassador here.

You do not see how we are disobedient prior to receiving the Gospel which is the rest which is in Christ? Christ rest enables us to be obedient. That is why He came. So that we can be Holy. If we do not heed to what he has done then we cease from the rest to which He offers. But the rest in Christ is what gets us there. We do not keep the Sabbath or any law to receive the rest. We receive the rest to keep that which has placed for us to be.

I never said we obey to be saved and you will never find a quote of me saying this, we obey because we love and have faith in what God asks of us. God writes His laws in our hearts and minds and the devil wants us to change our minds on what God placed there, but through our obedience and love to God, we keep what He has placed intact.
Yes you did. You said, "we need to keep the Sabbath holy to receive the rest in Christ" And that is the Rest which Hebrew's is speaking of which is the Gospel.
In particular Hebrews 4:9-10 is referring to the rest in Christ when we cease from our work on the seventh day (Sabbath) through faith. We need to keep the Sabbath holy to receive the rest in Christ and not through disobedience which is shown in Hebrews 4:6
If we do not heed to what he has done then we cease from the rest to which He offers. But the rest in Christ is what gets us there. We do not keep the Sabbath or any law to receive the rest. We receive the rest to keep that which has placed for us to be.

Just pointing this out:
Yeah that is important and you saying, “In particular Hebrews 4:9-10 is referring to the rest in Christ when we cease from our work on the seventh day (Sabbath) through faith. We need to keep the Sabbath holy to receive the rest in Christ and not through disobedience which is shown in Hebrews 4:6” which is salvation” which saying we need to keep the Sabbath holy to enter into the rest which is the gospel. In others words salvation through keeping the law.

That is an issue not being told I fear your issue is spiritual. If I said it was that would be different. However that was not said. I find it interesting and quite telling also that that is your focus now.

I think we see Hebrews 4 differently but not sure where this aggressive tone is coming from telling me to denounce my Adventist membership when I believe in all 28 fundamental beliefs, I believe we should obey God through faith and love and if you want to interpret this to mean something to support another view than you are adding to my words.

I am going to leave it in God’s hands now and we will just have to agree to disagree.

Not sure where this is all coming from Him or why you are taking such and aggressive tone with me, but I am going to leave it in God’s hands now and we will just have to agree to disagree.
Because when you say that we must keep the Sabbath holy to enter the rest which is of Christ which is called the Gospel in Hebrews 4 you are saying that we have to keep the Sabbath Holy to be saved. The rest in Christ, the Gospel is what saves. Not keeping any laws. That is why.

No, I have never said that, you said that. We are to walk with God in obedience which includes the Sabbath through love and faith. We are saved by grace through our faith. I have never said we have to keep the law to be saved, its through a changed heart by our relationship with Jesus and keeping the law is an outward expression of this change. There is no scripture that says we can sin willfully and still be saved. Hebrews 10:26-30

Initially it was because I care about you. Now it is because you are being persistent in spreading this that even your own church would censor. Because we do not keep anything holy to enter into the rest which is of Christ that is called the Gospel in Hebrews 4
