I would wonder why when God himself made something special for us that we would not want to receive that gift?
Most societies today think of the week in two parts.
Monday through Friday - called the 'work week' and
Saturday and Sunday - Called the weekend.
Both are misleading but it's one of those things we've heard all our lives so we don't question it.
Look at a calendar. Why do (most) all calendars start the week with Sunday? That means it's the first day of the week and jibes with the Bible.
Calling Saturday and Sunday the 'weekend' is also misleading. It's actually the ending and beginning of the week but that doesn't jive with the 5 day work week.
The LORD was specific. It was important enough to the creator to speak of it __ times.
It is in the 'Ten words' of course:
What to do -------
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Keep it separate from the rest of the week.
When? ----'Six days you shall labor and do all your work",
What is the Sabbath? -- '
but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God.'
WHO does this pertain to? --- '
In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.' -- Everyone, including your work animals.
WHY? - For
in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that
is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
EXODUS 20
---------
And again it is written -- Even the land must rest.
10 “Six years you shall sow your land and gather in its produce,
11 but the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow, that the poor of your people may eat; and what they leave, the beasts of the field may eat. In like manner you shall do with your vineyard and your olive grove.
12 Six days you shall do your work, and on the seventh day you shall rest, that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your female servant and the stranger may be refreshed.
Exodus 23
-----------
12-17 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you.
You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever; for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.’ ”
Exodus 31
--------
21“Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest.
Exodus 34
---------
“These are the words which the Lord has commanded you to do: Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh day shall be a holy day for you, a Sabbath of rest to the Lord. Whoever does any work on it shall be put to death. 3You shall kindle no fire throughout your dwellings on the Sabbath day.”
Ex 35
-----
Reiteration just before entering the promised land
12 ‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you.
13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
14 but the seventh day
is the Sabbath of the Lord your God.
In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who
is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.
15 And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
