  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What are you watching right now?

HBO Rome.

If you haven't watched it yet I recommend I, Claudius. It was filmed in 1976 for BBC. Well-acted production. It follows the times of the Julio-Claudian Emperors up to Claudius and the rise of Nero. John Hurt's portrayal of the insane Caligula is worth watching it alone.

I put a link to the Wikipedia article on the series if you are interested.

I forgot to add you get to see a young Patrick Stewart who still had his hair at that time. He plays one of the most interesting people of the Julio-Claudian period, The Praetorian Prefect Sejanus, who attempted a coup against Tiberius.

It Could Happen To You.

I remember having a huge crush on the Bridget Fonda character. Then I saw her character in Jackie Brown which I found really repulsive, lol. Now watching this movie.. I cannot get the Jackie Brown move out of my head.. and she isn't so appealing in the It Could Happen To You movie, lol.

I once liked the Tanya Roberts character in Beastmaster... Kira I think it was and found out she died last year.

The Spectacular Spider-Man (Season 1)
This is a fan favorite, & it's comic-accurate, but........eh. I prefer the 90s one.
I finished Season 2. I definitely enjoyed Season 2 a lot more, it really was spectacular. Although I like comic-accurate, season 1 is almost too comic accurate, to the point where I was thinking I know all of this, why am I watching a different version of it for the 100th time. It’s all the famous arcs: the Lizard, the Sinister 6, Venom, the Goblin, Aunt May sick, etc.

Season 2 is different. If it’s comic-based stories, it’s ones I’m not aware of. New villains get introduced. There’s a crime war that’s the focus of a few episodes. There’s a twist on the Goblin. Etc. The episodes aren’t as formulaic & are told in different ways, like w/ flashbacks, so that keeps it interesting.

The action scenes are too fast for me & needs to be slowed down a tad.

So overall, I’d say Season 2 lives up to the hype of ‘top 5 superhero show.’ I recommend this show to superhero or Spider-Man fans. If you’re pretty familiar w/ Spider-Man, I think you could skip Season 1 (maybe watch or read a recap) & jump right to Season 2 & not miss anything.

They need to do Season 3!

I have the complete Spectacular Spider-man on Blu-Ray and I doubt they will do another season as it came out in 2008 I think and to be honest too much of Marvel and DC movies and comics are filled with garbage propaganda these days I've heard it has gotten bad enough that their sales are going into the toilet now. I liked the SSM series I have it at almost 10 hours for the whole set. People who buy movies don't realize that even though seasons/box sets tend to cost more the cost per hour of content is a lot cheaper when a 1.5 hour movie costs $15-$20 or so that would equate to about 6 times as much for 10 hours in a set or $90-$120. If you find it on a streaming service it will pay for the cost of streaming for months if you aren't worrying about revisiting it in the future when they may pull it offline.

That's what I don't like about streaming platforms.

I have the complete collection of SSM on DVD. My friend gave it to me b/c I always told him I like the 90s one & he'd tell me SSM is better.

I've collected most of the spider-man movies and seasons buying it used for a fraction of the retail price. I think I paid $5 for the SSM series and was pleasantly surprised how good it was. I have the first 7 spider-man movies (not yet the latest one) and the spider-man into the spider verse movie which I liked but not quite as much as the IMDB rating of it. I also have spider-man the new animated series from 2003 and liked it but not as good as the SSM series it only lasted one season I think less than 5 hours content. I'm sure I don't have a lot of spider man content on dvd but I rarely buy movies new and if I can I buy local because buying online the shipping costs add up when you have a large collection and a very limited budget.
I both like and dislike streaming platforms as I've had cable over half my life and finally quit it and went to over the air and then buying movies used. The amount I would pay for cable and 1-2 premium channels more than pays for my collection but there are movies now streaming that I've not seen or series that are unaffordable to buy and hard to complete the series on the used market for a justifiable price especially if you only want to watch them once or are unsure if you even did buy it you would want to watch it again. I am currently watching through the 5 seasons of Naruto about half way through the third season now and it is pretty good. As I've watched a lot of tv series of all sorts of things I'm pretty well now seeing when those writing the story start using tricks to keep it going by dragging a conflict on and on instead of ending it and starting a new one or trying to sell games and cards etc more than a good storyline. I was watching HunterXHunter and half way through 3 seasons the first story ended and it suddenly went to an imaginary world and people were not battling based upon their own self but it added in collecting cards to "power up". I watched through other series based upon such framework at the start and series like Yugioh etc were fun to watch although at times they could trim down the excessive bantering a lot.
Anime series is hard to collect on a budget as they too often put out about 90 minutes of content in one release and you have to buy 10+ DVDs to get a season or series and some series the price of a season is still high. Basically you could pay up to $100 or more to get a season and be looking at 5-7 seasons and I'm not a person that wants to start watching a series and stop for months waiting to get a good deal on the next in line. I liked Stargate SG1 on tv but the series has 10 seasons and 3 movies and I would watch it but I kept missing episodes as they had it playing on Sunday and sometimes the weather knocked out my reception (antenna OTA) or something preempted it. It took me about 5 years to buy the whole series in the same type cases as I didn't want 3 different types of cases I got the 3 slim cases in a sleeve instead of several separate regular cases or the 5 disc regular thickness case that at the time were impossible to find replacements for. I also got the Stargate Atlantis series in the same case style and watched it all the way through. I also have Andromeda series I got the entire set in a huge box/sleeve for $20 and now they are showing it on streaming but as long as the series was (5 seasons) adding in 10-20 minutes of commercials per hour would take and extra 3-4 days to watch it streaming and the free services don't always allow you to save where you are at unless you sign up and give them a chance to spam your email account.

Top Gun: Maverick

It does feel like a movie from earlier decades, but in a good way. It has that great balance of humor, action, and emotion.
Desperately need that.

I hear it's really good. I probably won't see it, but want to see it do well at the box office.

I try not to hype things too much, because it results in people enjoying things less, but it's a very solid movie. Definitely a crowd pleaser.

I hated the first Top Gun.. but for some reason the sequel sounds interesting.. and many reviewers say it's superior to it too. Which is surprising. Also read it has a 1980s vibe and pacing which I appreciate.

I hadn't seen the original. Maybe they are saying it's 80s vibe but more polished. All I know is I'd recommend Maverick.
