Your misunderstanding. The Catholic Catechism says that we should hope for the salvation of all people and that hell is empty i.e. that UR is true. And you're saying that they are hoping for a heresy to be true. What's with this picture?
Fallen man's idea of "sanity" does not equate to Biblical truth.Anyway, by Orthodoxy I was referring to the Eastern Orthodox church which regards the universalist Gregory of Nyssa as the "the father of fathers", and not a heretic at all. Good to know there's still some sanity left in the world![]()
Don't know any. . .never even heard of it until this forum. In theory, I've no idea and even less interest. In practice, most people I know (Church of England) are hopeful universalists, a few are universalists and a few are deeply unhappy Infernalists. What's your experience of Christians that you know IRL?
we are rational beings with spirits.
Your misunderstanding.
That is not saying UR is true, that is hoping that hell is empty because purgatory will take care of the problem.
But in Catholic teaching, only believers go to purgatory, unbelievers go to damnation.
Fallen man's idea of "sanity" does not equate to Biblical truth.
Your first premise is an incorrect understanding of the context: addressed to believers.Really, then reason with me:
1. God wants all saved.
2. God is able to save all.
Ergo...
Their hope is not about restoration. It's not saying UR is true, I agree, but it's hoping it's true.
My question was, do you accept this? Do you accept that the Catholic church hopes for the restoration of all and that that hell is empty, IOW UR? If you don't, please say so and I'll dig out the part of the Catholic Catechism that says just that.
Their hope is not about restoration.
Their hope is that God will at their death find everyone basically good "on the inside" and accept them, making purgatory their experience for some clean-up, rather than hell.
Catholic teaching is not about Scripture, it's about church doctrine, it's about the way their tradition views the spiritual world.I know you're a very scriptural person so let me ask, Do you have any scripture that backs up this very complicated sentence? Or is this merely an abstract intellectual theorem that you've been taught, no doubt by the finest minds that Protestantism has yet produced (and I say this as a reluctant Protestant)?
Catholic teaching is not about Scripture, it's about church doctrine, it's about the way their tradition views the spiritual world.
And it's gotten a little fluid in the last few decades, Protestantism pushing it around a little.
Got any collateral?Perhaps but I have no interest in the Protestant Vs Catholic debate. I'm only interested in the restoration of all. Sue me!
Scripture teaches us Eve was deceived but Adam was notThe serpent initiated the whole transaction.
Saint Steven said: ↑
He and Eve were deceived by the serpent. They had made no willful plans to disobey God that I am aware of.
Everyone ended up responsible for what went down, assigning blame accomplishes nothing.Scripture teaches us Eve was deceived but Adam was not
1 Timothy 2:14 (KJV)
[14] And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
except for the truth of Scripture...Everyone ended up responsible for what went down, assigning blame accomplishes nothing.
The last action the humans adam and eve did before being cast out was blaming, so that's pretty telling.except for the truth of Scripture...
John 8:32 (KJV)
[32] And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
John 17:17 (KJV)
[17] Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Fortunately large parts of the OT are not historical. If God actually made that demand, then he would be a murderer. Is God a murderer and does he advocate for murder. He asked the Jews to kill children and killed children and babies himself. Does that make him a murderer?
I recall doing a study which ended inconclusive.Fortunately large parts of the OT are not historical. If God actually made that demand, then he would be a murderer.
