Newsom was victorious in the recall for only one reason because he has a D by his nampeople were afraid voting in favor of the recall that would Elder get elected governor.

His rather effective efforts against the pandemic, relative to most republican governors had a huge effect. As you know, his approval continued to rise as his efforts began to pay off.

However, it is true that having a republican (and a weak, ineffective one at that) as the likely alternative, probably added to his overwhelming victory.

Next year if anyone runs against him in the Democratic primary he will lose. Even the polls say the majority of Democrats do not think he should get reelected but they were against the recall.

Well, that's a testable assumption...

Sept 14:
Newsom Ends Recall Even More Popular Than He Began the Year

The effort to turn California red galvanized Democrats behind the first-term incumbent, who was never actually unpopular

    • 57% of California voters approve of Newsom, and his job approval rating has never dipped below 52% so far this year.
    • Newsom’s net approval rating has improved 15 points among Democratic voters since January, and strengthened after Republican Larry Elder joined the race.
No, it seems you are wrong.

Disastrous results in Florida and Texas? Lol

ICUs filled, COVID deaths rising, infection rates higher than almost any other state...

Compare the number of business closures in Texas and Florida to California and get back to me.

Yes, that might be interesting...
In Texas, latest COVID-19 wave could cost 72,000 jobs, study finds
In Texas, latest COVID-19 wave could cost 72,000 jobs, study finds

Worse than I thought. Let's look at Florida...

From August:
More businesses are folding and leaving laid-off workers in the lurch
The number of businesses going under in South Florida is growing at an alarming rate, cutting the chances for laid-off workers to find other jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Yelp, the national online business listing firm, nearly 3,000 businesses closed in the tri-county area between March 15 and July 1.

Not to mention the fact that Florida has the second oldest population in the US yet their Covid numbers are only marginally worse.

Well, let's take a look at that...

That's not what "marginal" means. BTW, the reporting changed in Florida,so that the deaths aren't recorded as they happen and only turn up later. So what looks like a huge decline is just missing data. However, since the death rate ballooned to hundreds of people a day, many decided to get vaccinated, and the higher vaccination rates, plus the many cities and school districts defying DeSantis and protecting their people anyway, have reduced new infections. Deaths should eventually slow, but it will be a long time before they drop to California levels.

That's not correct. As you learned, he never went below 52% approval this year. But you're probably right that having a weak and Trump-like republican as the likely alternative, probably did contribute to Newsom's strong win. But republicans have a face-saving strategy:

In taking a page from Trump’s big lie playbook, some on the right are already baselessly suggesting a Gavin Newsom victory in the upcoming California recall would be the result of fraud.

After living in a state where you’ve been required to wear a mask continuously for over a year and a half and your movement has been restricted to just going to work and going to the grocery store people are frustrated and tired.

You must live in a weird place. I live in California and experienced none of that. I went to the Dr, Church, drove around town in my wheelchair, to the store. About the only place I couldn't go was work because we went online

Considering that California has a much larger population than Texas or Florida, it's surprising that Texas and Florida have so many more infections and deaths than California.

Thanks for pointing that out.

above numbers for 7 day average:

1. Texas
2. Florida
3. California

How is that not marginally better? I know you’re not the sharpest tool in the shed but try to digest that

It varies depending on the county. Los Angeles county has had a mask mandates and April of last year except for a couple weeks in June you’ve been required to wear a mask everywhere you go. Not to mention the fact that even now I believe restaurants and gyms are only allowed to be at 50% capacity if that

What is more surprising is you calling the state with the third highest totals doing so much better than the other two states.

Well that maybe but it seem implied that it was like that everywhere. Not all of Ca is as loony as LA County :)

Barb,

I know you’re not the sharpest knife in the drawer but he pulled out a few facts that you seem to miss. Registered Democrats out number Republicans by margin of 2:1. The recall was a longshot. But next year if a Democrat runs in the primary against Newsom, Newsom is gone. He has completely mismanaged the Covid pandemic. We’ve had the most draconian measures in place yet we’ve had some of the highest numbers in the country and LA has had more small business closures then any other city in the US. He outspent Elder 4:1, To make the election Democrat versus Republican instead of an election about his job performance. He is universally disliked. The only thing that saved him was being a Democrat in a blue state

When you get angry and start calling names, you tag yourself as a loser. Don't do that to yourself.

Registered Democrats out number Republicans by margin of 2:1.

Which helps explain why Newsom so handily beat a weak, Trump-like republican. But as you also learned, his succesful response to the COVID-19 pandemic also helped him win.

Just 3 in 10 said Newsom's pandemic control measures are too strict, countering a key argument in the recall drive against him. 70% support the state's student mask mandate and 63% sided with the governor in seeing vaccination as more of a public health responsibility than a personal choice.
...
Overall, 55% approved of the way Newsom is handling his job.

Positive results on COVID handling, strong Democratic turnout helped Newsom, exit poll shows

And yes, the fact that the republican candidate is kind of a kook, did help Newsom:

The idea that a black man would be a white supremacist is so absurd it doesn’t even deserve a response. That’s the kind of statement that gets people to question your intelligence.

What happens when we mix money with health (U.S. system)? The Christian learned long ago what first love of money causes and put it in the bible 1 Timothy 6:10 . <-- What is a patent? Does the vax have one? Who owns it? How does the CDC own a patent too if it is an advisory agent? <- When ? ( I researched 2015 ).

So we got what we got in mental gymnastics to justify the Christian psych to give body/temple to said money patents . For you , look up the term sorcery in the bible and you decide. Your money (Freedom to spend and travel in vax passport 1 Timothy 6:10 manifested ) or your temple "not given" to patent experiment through sorcery and death.

A lot of Christians trust money interests firstly and thus we get this thrashing about in a false realm of right vs wrong in a psych not wanting to question but just... trust... that which loves a dollar over a soul.

Wait until you see what happens when people find out their doctors love a dollar more than the patient as a lot of hospitals are corporate firstly (Meaning 1 Timothy 6:10 manifested in the term corporation) and to survive, lies must be propped up as truths.

The idea that a black man would be a white supremacist is so absurd it doesn’t even deserve a response.

In Nazi Germany, there were Jews who collaborated with the Nazis. But this guy might not be a self-hating black person; it's possible he was collaborating with white supremacists for pragmatic reasons to further his hoped-for political career.

We can speculate as to why he did it, but the fact remains that he did it. Denying it, really doesn't help you at all.

Bottom line; Californians looked at Elder, and were even more convinced that they needed Newsom in the governor's mansion.

Don't get mad; get smart. Find a cogent argument for the things you believe. Trust me, it will work better for you.

Jews who collaborated with the Nazis were trying to avoid going to the gas chamber. And they only collaborated after they were in prison in concentration camps.

But the idea that a black man is a white supremacist is so stupid I don’t know how you expect anyone to take anything else you post seriously.

Speaking of get smart how about displaying a modicum of common sense.

Newsom is in the pocket of the teachers union like most Democrats. Schools had been closed for almost an entire year because he cannot get the teachers union to agree to go back to school and because he’s in their pocket. Next to the mask mandate this is probably the most unpopular thing he did. Of course he put his own kids in private school which stayed open just to show you the hypocrisy of a typical Democrat.

People voted against recalling him for only one reason he was a Democrat and they were afraid of electing Larry elder who was a conservative Republican.

Larry Elder is a good man who grew up in south central, When Newsom was growing up with a silver spoon in his mouth. Newsom’s family was wealthy and made money from the Getty’s who got rich through oil. What the Democrats want to stop production of. Newsom is the poster child of white privilege. On the other hand Larry elder, his father was a marine who worked two jobs as a janitor to provide for his family until he opened up a small café.

Given the choice between a black man with working class roots or a white man from a wealthy family and the son of white privilege it’s pretty sad which ones they went to vote for.

You would think the party that claims to be so supportive of black Americans that they would be in favor of electing the first black governor of California. The truth is they don’t care about black people they just care about furthering the Democratic agenda. But to go so far as to make up lies about a black candidate such as accusing him of being a white supremacist I mean that’s just uncalled for.

No doubt about it, putting up a crackpot like Elder did help Newsom. His relationship with a far-right Chinese cult didn't do him any good.

But Elder’s profile has grown rapidly outside California thanks to his webcasts on The Epoch Times, a far-right international media company born out of the Chinese spiritual movement, Falun Gong.

Elder has nearly 600,000 subscribers on his Epoch Times YouTube channel and puts out three videos per week. The content is what you would expect. He attacks Democrats, demagogues every angle on race and repeatedly defends Donald Trump’s “big lie” about election fraud.

Elder even unleashed one of his signature right-wing rants when McClatchy’s California editorial boards interviewed him earlier this month. He downplayed the substantiated Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election to claim there’s a double standard between Hillary Clinton and Trump and their complaints about “stolen elections.”

Of course, only one of those people was impeached for inciting a deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol. But I digress. Elder’s tangents have a way of pulling you along for the ride.

During our interview, we asked Elder about The Epoch Times and its ties to Falun Gong. Interestingly, it was one of the few times he didn’t have a talking point at the ready and tried to scuddle past the question.
