Did Gentiles use to keep the Sabbath during the first centuries of Christianity? How widespread was the practice in comparison with Sunday meetings? What does the historical evidence say about all this?

How much weight does the actions of 2nd or 3d century christians carry for us today? I mean, there were already wolves and false teachers in the 1st century so can I trust the actions of those who came later as authoritative?Did Gentiles use to keep the Sabbath during the first centuries of Christianity? I checked your link. There is no,zero, none credible, verifiable, historical evidence of Sabbath keeping or anything else. That would consist of something written at or near the times in question by a participant or direct observer. What some "historian" wrote 100s of years later is not evidence, only opinion.

There is no gentiles that believe or follow Gods Word. There are only JEWISH and GENTILE "believers" but in the new covenant all are one in Christ *EPHESIANS 2:11-13; GALATIANS 3:28-29; ROMANS 9:6-8; ROMANS 2:28-29; COLOSSIANS 3:11; ROMANS 10:11-13 as the gentiles believers are now grafted in ROMANS 11:13-27. If you are not a part of Gods' ISRAEL then you have no part in God's new covenant promise *HEBREWS 8:10-12. Therefore the premise of this OP is broken.
Sabbath keeping is more widely practiced then Sunday keeping. According to the scriptures, Jesus is our example and he kept the Sabbath (Matthew 12:1-8; 10-12; 24:20; Mark 3:1-5; Luke 6:1-10; 13:14-16; 14:1-5; John 7:22-23; 9:14; Mark 1:21; Mark 6:2; Luke 4:16; 31; Luke 14:1; 23:56; John 2:6; Matthew 16:24; 1 Cor 11:1; Ephesians 5:1-21; Peter 2:20-22) The Apostle kept the Sabbath (Acts 13:14; 13:27; 13:44; 15:21; 16:13; 17:2; 18:4; Rev 1:10)
In fact God's people all though time to this present day from GENESIS to REVELATION from the old testament to the new, from JESUS and the Apostles to after the death of JESUS and the Apostles. All through time, God has always had a people the have kept God's 4th commandment unbroken to this very present day.
There was no ISRAEL and no JEW when God made the Sabbath for all mankind according to the words of JESUS *GENESIS 2:1-3; MARK 2:27.
Hope this helps.
Any biblical or non-biblical (i.e. from History) evidence of someone ever keeping the Sabbath prior to Moses?
So if only Adam and Eve were around when God made the Sabbath who do you think he made it for? Then we also have this...
GENESIS 26:5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my LAWS.
I had a look at your link which does not consider the other scriptures provided you in MARK 2:27-28 which state that the Sabbath was made for all mankind when there was no Jew or ISRAEL *GENESIS 2:1-3. All I know is the scriptures shared with you. This was only a small section of the post shared with you as there was only Adam and Eve when God created the Sabbath for all mankind.I think you will find this page of interest: Did Abraham Observe the Sabbath?
Is your position that Christians are sinning when they work on Saturdays or allow others they employ to work on Saturday?I had a look at your link which does not consider the other scriptures provided you in MARK 2:27-28 which state that the Sabbath was made for all mankind when there was no Jew or ISRAEL *GENESIS 2:1-3. Scripture does not say "mankind" LGW, it says MAN. We have had this conversation many times. Sabbath was made for Israel soon after their crossing of the Red Sea and not until then. God didn't demand any other nation to observe the day He made special for Israel. They were to keep it in memorial to their escape from Egypt and the remembrance of creation. It became a shadow when Jesus, man's eternal Sabbath Rest came to save mankind.I had a look at your link which does not consider the other scriptures provided you in MARK 2:27-28 which state that the Sabbath was made for all mankind when there was no Jew or ISRAEL *GENESIS 2:1-3. You make a grave mistake when you try to teach that the Gen account of what God did on the day after all creation was to make an eternal day of rest for all mankind. This does not come from scripture, it comes from the pen of Ellen White. You, in no way, can prove what you write and therefore you should not write such things.

As always you have to deny everything I write even though most of the translations say "man" not all mankind. "Human beings" does not indicate "all": human beings. Not really Bob. God's Word (not mine) does indeed say all mankind. JESUS says (not me) that the Sabbath was made for man in MARK 2:27. The Greek words used here for "man" is not JEW or ISRAEL but ἄνθρωπος; anthrōpos G444 which means "human beings".
Keep in mind the scriptures teach also there was no JEW or ISRAEL when God made the Sabbath for mankind on the "seventh day" of the creation week, only Adam and Eve, where God blessed the "seventh day" and made the "seventh day" a "Holy day" and a memorial (Remember) of creation on the seventh day of the creation week as shown in GENESIS 2:1-3.
Since no one, except the Israelites, kept the Sabbath up until Jesus made the remark in Mark's book there is no reason to believe God ever intended the Sabbath to involve any other nation. Now keep in mind Bob, it is JESUS (not me) who is the Lord (creator and maker) of the Sabbath and they are his Words not mine.
Once again you deny what Col 2:16-17 is telling us. The Sabbath indeed was referring to the weekly Sabbath as being a shadow. It is impossible for God's 4th commandment of the 10 commandments to be a shadow of anything as it is a "memorial" in EXODUS 20:8-11 "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy..." of creation. The Sabbath therefore looks backwards not forwards to things to come *COLOSSIANS 2:16-17.
Balderdash. You have never proved your points because it is not in scripture, it is the teaching of your church and that is not kosher. There was no sin and no need for law or a plan of salvation before the fall of mankind when the Sabbath was made for all mankind and when man walked in perfect harmony and talked face to face with God.
God's word or Ellen's word??????Of course you are free to believe as you wish. For me I prefer to believe God's Word and it seems they disagree with you.
Hello LoveGodsWord,
Thank you for your response. I just noticed it this minute after hoping to hear from someone all day....
I am still confused by your answer....do we keep the sabbath today or risk rejection by God or not. Your first words were "no dear friend". You then say we must obey all 10 of God's commandments.
So do you refuse to work on Saturdays? Do you refuse to work on the first day of passover? Are you committed to not allowing anyone else work for you on Saturdays? This is a requirement of keeping the passover.
Circumcision is also a command of God, though not one of the 10. Is that also in effect? What about dietary laws? Sacrificial laws? Civil laws? Which ones are we to keep and which ones are obsolete? Who decided which are which?
Heb 8
7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.
10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.
I live under a new contract with God established by Jesus and sealed in his blood. Can you explain the 13th verse particularly the tense of decay and wax old with the word ready? Soon there would be no more Jewish nation...no temple...no sacrifices...no priests. The end of the age.
Hebrews is an amazing book about Jewish christians who are thinking life would be a lot easier if they returned to Judaism. Problem is, once you have tasted the goodness of God in Jesus Christ, you can't go back or you will be crucifying Jesus all over again (ch6)
The deal we have with Jesus is based on a better law, a better high priest, a better sacrifice, a better temple....etc.
Not one jot or tittle will pass from the law or prophets till all be fulfilled...it is fulfilled.
I follow Jesus not Moses.
to which I responded...RCrihfield said: ↑ Is your position that Christians are sinning when they work on Saturdays or allow others they employ to work on Saturday?
I responded this way because no one is held accountable for sin according to the scriptures until we have been given a knowledge of the truth of Gods' Word. Once we have been given a knowledge of the truth of God's Word and choose to reject it, then God holds us accountable for sin it we continue on in our sins and reject his Word. These are Gods Word (not my words) and can be found in ACTS OF THE APOSTLES 17:30-31; HEBREWS 10:26-31 and JAMES 4:17.LoveGodsWord wrote: According to the scriptures, if we knowingly break any one of Gods 10 commandments we sin against God (see JAMES 2:10-11 and JAMES 4:17), for through the law is the knowledge of what sin is *ROMANS 3:20; ROMANS 7:7; 1 JOHN 3:4. According to the scriptures however, God does not hold us accountable to sin until he gives us a knowledge of His Word at which time calls all men everywhere to believe and follow what his Word says *ACTS OF THE APOSTLES 17:30-31. At this time according to the scriptures if we reject God's Word in order to continue in known unrepentant sin (knowingly breaking anyone of God's commandments) the scriptures teach there remains no sacrifice for sin but a fearful looking forward to of the judgement to come *HEBREWS 10:26-31. God is calling his people out from following man made teachings and traditions that break his commandments *MATTHEW 15:3-9. The hour is comings and now is that God's true worshipers will worship God in Spirit and in truth. God is a Spirit and those who worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in truth *JOHN 4:23-24. God is calling us all (myself included) to return back to the pure Word of God. Babylon has fallen is fallen and has become an habitation of every foul and unclean Spirit...
