I love history. And I love listening to historians. This exchange may challenge that tho. I mean the Obama admin followed right on the heels of one of the most comprehensive house of cards financial collapses ever, and inherited one of the single worst foreign policy blunders ever. Nor do I think that what our friend quoted him as having said was in fact what he did say.

You're right about that and, in addition, what Trump said on that occasion, and very explicitly, was that not all Mexicans are like what he was speaking about. That part never gets any quotation marks, for some reason.

That's the fear Trump's pushing. I have had rich friends and poor friends and people of all races and ethnicities in my life. People are people--and they should not be banned from housing because of who they are.

Do you believe that if desperate parents take a long, arduous dangerous trip to try to give their children a better life, or to help them survive, period, that it is the parents' fault when their children are put into cages and isolated from them? "It's the parents' fault," some Christians in name only say. "They shouldn't have come." Do you believe Kyle Rittenhouse was helping the police when he came, univited, with dangerous alt-right militias, only to kill two and wound one protester? Do you believe that Kentucky police should have fired 32 shots in Breonna Taylor's home, killing her as they slept?

If they want more affordable housing anywhere, all they have to do is a month or so of rioting, and then businesses will move out of the area and real estate prices will plummet, assuming it all hasn't been burned to the ground by that time. Right now, you can find some good deals in New York as a result. Although paying for it might be a lot more challenging with businesses moving out of the area so they can actually survive.

Fair enough. What MAGA means to me is reactionary nonsense. It invokes an imaginary golden age which never really existed.

They have an image of school kids, hand on heart, reciting the pledge of allegiance as a bulwark against creeping "Socialism" out to destroy American values.

But then fail to realise the pledge of allegiance was written by a self-identifying, hard line Socialist, who raged against and despised Capitalism and the unfair and hypocritical "polite" society.
