Eight mail-in requests for absentee voter ballots had their party affiliations altered, authorities say

ELKINS, W.Va. — A West Virginia postal carrier pleaded guilty Thursday to altering mail-in requests for absentee voter ballots.

Thomas Cooper entered the plea in federal court in Elkins to attempted election fraud and injury to the mail, U.S. Attorney Bill Powell said in a statement.

Cooper was charged in May after eight mail-in requests for absentee voter ballots had their party affiliations altered.

“An investigation by the secretary of state’s office found five of the ballot requests were changed from Democrat to Republican with a black ink pen, the affidavit said.”

Pretty stupid Republican there. If he was smarter he would have made the changes other way around to give Trump another propaganda hammer.

Seems the prison sentence For election fraud is around 6 - 24 months. What a silly reason to serve some jail time.

It sounds to me like WV is doing a very good job of vetting the ballot request forms. That says to me that they will be just as careful vetting the ballots from their primaries and possibly in the Nov. election as well. Good for them.

As a Canadian I am greatly puzzled as to why party affiliation has anything at all to do with a request for an absentee ballot. Such a demand leaves the system vulnerable to just this sort of attempted fraud. Your party affiliation is no business of anyone else at all. How did this perversion of democracy come about and why is it tolerated?

Because in the primaries candidates are chosen to represent a particular party so the ballot that will be sent to a Democrat will only have Democrats on that ballot. As an unaffiliated voter, I receive both a Republican and a separate Democratic ballot but I can only choose and return one or the other.

In the general election, your party affiliation doesn't matter there is only one ballot.

This has been an issue for a long time.... Changing ballots is not really the big issue though it is when they put aside and "forget" large stacks of ballots that come in from a certain area that skews heavily in one direction that is the big issue.

Some of the most notorious examples in recent times....

Brenda Snipes says she won’t resign as Broward County election supervisor after all
This one had nothing to do with mail-in ballots.

This one was about ballots that had been mailed in not being certified as valid before they were opened and counted, which was election official's incompetence.
Brenda Snipes says she won’t resign as Broward County election supervisor after all

So neither one of these is mail-in ballot fraud.
