I will go with that analysis--somewhat--when the president speaks in similar terms of the hundreds of politicians and celebrities who started it and who "spew vile" (or is that supposed to be "bile?") at him.
No small number of those politicians being members of his own party... Particularly during the 2016 primaries...
Of course, those politicians quickly changed their tune and are now loyal servants of Donald's... Does that mean they never meant it?
Doesn't that normalize such discourse?
I'll even settle for having a few people who are in that group criticizing what has been done to the president by their side!
I would like to think there is only one side -- the American side -- but that would be a foolish notion.
It is the duty of opposition to oppose. No president has ever been, no should ever be, immune to criticism, parody, or mockery. That said, the line has been crossed many times.
As president, and as a man, Donald was faced with a choice: Rise above it, as befits the office of the President of the United States, learn from it, as befits a man, or sink to the same level of mudslinging and pettiness, as befits, well... nobody worth admiring.
Donald, to the surprise of absolutely nobody, chose and continues to choose the muck. And his followers cheer him for it, enabling and excusing him in exchange for the shiny baubles he promises them.
Perhaps he will cross a line, and his base will expect better from him...
So far, it looks like any of that happening is veerrry unlikely.
