  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I love to give freely, without compulsion, throughout the year. I don't like prescribed days of gifting. But perhaps the discipline of giving to a few in my family on a set day is a good thing to submit to.

Probably the same thing(s) you don't like about it.

I don't like the:
  • commercialism
  • fake friendliness
  • way that people overdo things (decorating, spending, partying) because in most cases I think they are trying to make themselves feel better

I agree with this because gifts given like this are gifts given with the right attitude.

I hate what Christmas is to society, a day of materialism, greed and pressure. I dont do anything for it except a hassle free lunch, no gifts, no useless decorations. I know in my heart that Jesus came to save us and I dont see santa and Christmas trees as a way of acknowledging his gift.

I don't waste any time on Christmas as it is celebrated in the secular world. I do, however, love Christmas as it is celebrated in the Orthodox Church, along with every other Feast day on the liturgical calendar.

Same here. Xmas is a pagan/Roman tradition.

Are you a Christian who dislikes Christmas time?
Bah, humbug.
What don't you like about Christmas time?
It is a religious spirit.
What do you do at Christmas time?
I continue to avail myself to the Holy Spirit, because that time still belongs to Him.

I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one to dislike Christmas time. Yes, I am a Christian.

Are you a Christian who dislikes Christmas time?

I'd say so.

What don't you like about Christmas time?

It's way too much hype, stress, busyness, and effort for one day. People don't celebrate Thanksgiving or Labour Day or even Groundhog Day weeks ahead of time, so why do it with Christmas, especially when there is no Biblical basis for asserting the Nativity happened on that day or time of year.

What do you do at Christmas time?
I go through the motions so as not to exacerbate family tension, but also treat it as normal as I personally can. Plenty of times I've moderated at this site on the day.

Ah wonderful thread that I won't be flamed for saying that I don't like Christmas, I see no Biblical reason for it ( actually the opposite)

That is my reason.

Here are some others

I hate how all of a sudden people want to know what you are doing ie at shops etc.

I hate when people say "oh you can't be alone at Christmas..... like what about all the other days of the year?

The implied obligation of reciprocal gift or card giving.
(give freely and cheerfully at anytime or not at all)

I hate the pressure put on those who can least afford it.

After all that preparation and " warm toasty feelings" the very next day everything is back the same, nothing has changed but a lot of money spent, high expectations but then the realisation of the same problems and going by what is documented, this time of year (Christmas and New Year) is the highest time for suicide.

I once took part in all of that too but quite a few years ago after really looking into it, gave it all away. It was the most freeing thing I have done, yet trying to tell people I no longer celebrated it and why, brought a barrage of arguments or simple unbelief that I "really" didn't mean it.

What I find the saddest thing of all is that anyone would think that it would please God by taking part in all this because when Jesus was born as a baby there was no room for Him then, as it continued throughout His life: and the world, sadly, has no room for Him now.
I agree with Biblehighligters post.

No problems with Christmas once you celebrate it on January 7th, as God intended. Then all the "Rome stole this day from the pagans" nonsense goes away, you don't have to worry about the commercial insanity, and you can just go to church like you'd do every other day...for 5-6 hours...again, as God intended. ;)

The form of religion, denying the power thereof, characterizes a lot of celebration.

Every day, those things are sin in the world, as declared throughout Scripture.

=============================================================
We taught my children, and others when asked this >>>
I love to give freely, without compulsion, throughout the year. I don't like prescribed days of gifting

and except as described in Scripture, i.e. not so much , at all, this >>
But perhaps the discipline of giving to a few in my family on a set day is a good thing to submit to.

....for example, with celebrations of the world, religious vanity, even birthdays, it seems, building someone's ego, while it might feel good and look good to do, ... well, is it ever good ?

I do not like the secular and commercial "Christmas" that we encounter.

I also do not like that the season begins so early, and it is a season of feasting prior to the feast. When we prepare for a feast with a couple months of feasting, then the actual feast itself feels meaningless and mundane, unless we make a gargantuan production out of the holiday and blow it up into something far more huge than it otherwise would be. If we would prepare for Christmas with a period of fasting (or at least not a two-month-long Christmas party), then the holiday itself would feel far more special without having to make a giant Hallmark production out of it. Also, it would feel a lot more special to celebrate it for 12 days if we weren't already celebrating it for two months.

Ah, another thread where I get to be a Grinch again and rant about Christmas some more. That makes me happy because I have a tendency to say "Bah humbug" a lot. I often play along and go through the motions so I won't exacerbate the family tension. On a side note, I agree with you.

However, I would like to add a couple of reasons of my own.
  • Feeling obligated to buy gifts for relatives I haven't seen in a few years or I only see maybe once or twice a year. None of these relatives ever try to contact me or any of my children otherwise.
  • Parents lying to their children by telling them that Santa is real and other parents who liked to rudely chastise me for not playing along in that lie by telling my own children that Santa is real.
