Hi, I am new here and a new Christian. I wanted to know about the trinity. People say the 3 persons of the trinity are equal. My opinion at the moment is that the Father is at the top of the trinity over the son and holy spirit. Is this wrong to believe.

What do you mean by "at the top"?

Are they 3 different forms of one God? With one mind? Sorry I'm thinking is there a hierarchy? (If spelled right)
3 persons, one God. Of the same essence, same will, coequal and coeternal. The Son was begotten of the Father before all Ages, the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father.

I went through a period of believing this, too. Coming to trust and confess the Church's perennial confession of the Trinity has been a journey.

The Father does give instruction to the Son, and the Son sends the Spirit, yet all are fully God, in nature.

These articles might be of some help;

There have been various analogies to understand the trinity. We're made in the image of God with a mind, body and spirit. And so one could associate the mind of God as the Father. Our mind commands our body. If we intend to say something the idea is formulated in our mind and then expressed in our word, or in God's case what is in God's mind is expression through the Word of God. "The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word." Heb 1:3 One could like the relationship between the Father and the Son of God as that between the sun as an object in space 93 million miles away from us, and the light that comes from the sun, which travels all the way to earth. When we look at the sun we're actually looking at the light that comes from the sun and calling that that sun. Kind of like when Jesus said "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father" John 14:9. Our body is to be subordinate to our mind. So also with the Son of God.

Jesus said, "the Father is greater than I." John 14:28

Joh 5:19 Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.

Joh 5:30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.

John 14:24 These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

Luke 22:42 saying, "Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done."

Even the terms Son and Father have a hierarchical concept.

As for the Spirit, again he's subordinate to the Father
Joh 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name,
But at times subordinate to the Son
John 15:26 But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
And at times he leads the Son
Mt 4:1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
But he's never spoken of as commanding the Father.

Many will say that Jesus' subordinate role only lasted during his earthly ministry, but actually his eternal role has subordination in it. He is the Word of God. Before his incarnation God sent him. And after his ascension it is the Father again who gives him the authority to judge. "For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead." Acts 17:31 and he said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me." Mt 28:18 Why would it have to be given to him if he was in charge to begin with?

Trinitarianism is a very difficult doctrine to understand in a balanced way. Since there is only one God, there is no basis for a hierarchy; yet there are distinctions.

As a relatively new Christian, I suggest you should not be too concerned about the details. As you advance in understanding of the Christian faith, you will encounter many views including some who make the three persons too separate, leading toward Tritheism -- as though there were a committee of three independent gods -- or too indistinguishable, leading toward Modalism -- as though God was one person, choosing one of three forms to manifest himself in.

The single best scripture I've found for finding a balanced understanding is John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word [shown to be Jesus by verse 14], and the Word was *with* God, and the Word *was* God."

Simultaneously, Jesus is shown to be distinct from the Father, yet of the same essence.

With: distinct from, yet not separated from.
Was: of the same essence.

No words seem to do justice to God's actual nature, including mine, which I recognize as my best shot, although probably still misleading.

To my knowledge, almost all evangelical creeds accept the Nicean creed, and the Nicean creed attempts to provide the very definition of what the triune God is. The wording they use is that God is one *substance* but also is three *persons*. They chose these words carefully to combat the wrong ideas they had to deal with in their day.

I am not entirely happy with the words they used, but I'm not convinced I can do better. I think perhaps one being sounds better than one substance in English. I am not entirely happy with the term 'persons', but neither have I found any reasonable substitute. I have considered personality or even the phrase 'center of consciousness', but found neither to be an improvement.

I think I would say I am more a trinitarianist. But I am still searching and wondering about whether or not evangelicals believe in a triune God?
They do on paper, (based on most statements of faith I've read) but the trinity is a difficult concept to discuss in an individualistic culture. People may say they believe in the trinity, but when they explain what this trinity is .. it can vary.

Clint,

I recommend a thorough reading of Johns works. Start with the Gospel of John, then go through the epistles of John.

Don’t read them just yet for doctrine other than understanding the Trinity.

When you have accomplished that... jump to the book of Galatians and move slow through it... Cross referencing each of the points you don’t understand by googling the verse or passage (series of verses in question)... followed by the word Cross Reference.

Find 3 translations of scripture you like.

A paraphrase for easy reading and topical understanding.

A literal translation for specificity and deeper study.

A Modern translation that is literal but conformed more towards your way of speaking.... for daily study.

Use the Internet because it’s all there.

Do NOT use Commentaries! Stick with Cross References, Interlinear Searches (Of verses)... “example... Romans 4:1-6 Interlinear” in google.

Concordances.... Word in question plus the word concordance in google.

For deep translation comparison... (Example Romans 4:1-6 Parallel)

All Love in Jesus Christ to you.

1 John 2:27... Believe it!

The Athanasian Creed, one of the three ecumenical creeds:

Whoever desires to be saved must, above all, hold the catholic faith.

Whoever does not keep it whole and undefiled will without doubt perish eternally.

And the catholic faith is this,

that we worship one God in Trinity and Trinity in unity, neither confusing the persons nor dividing the substance.

For the Father is one person, the Son is another, and the Holy Spirit is another.

But the Godhead of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit is one: the glory equal, the majesty coeternal.

Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit:

the Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, the Holy Spirit uncreated;

the Father infinite, the Son infinite, the Holy Spirit infinite;

the Father eternal, the Son eternal, the Holy Spirit eternal.

And yet there are not three Eternals, but one Eternal,

just as there are not three Uncreated or three Infinites, but one Uncreated and one Infinite.

In the same way, the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, the Holy Spirit almighty;

and yet there are not three Almighties but one Almighty.

So the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God;

and yet there are not three Gods, but one God.

So the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, the Holy Spirit is Lord;

and yet there are not three Lords, but one Lord.

Just as we are compelled by the Christian truth to acknowledge each distinct person as God and Lord,

so also are we prohibited by the catholic religion to say that there are three Gods or Lords.

The Father is not made nor created nor begotten by anyone. The Son is neither made nor created, but begotten of the Father alone.

The Holy Spirit is of the Father and of the Son, neither made nor created nor begotten but proceeding.

Thus, there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits.

And in this Trinity none is before or after another; none is greater or less than another;

but the whole three persons are coeternal with each other and coequal so that in all things, as has been stated above, the Trinity in Unity and Unity in Trinity is to be worshiped.

Therefore, whoever desires to be saved must think thus about the Trinity.

But it is also necessary for everlasting salvation that one faithfully believe the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, it is the right faith that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is at the same time both God and man.

He is God, begotten from the substance of the Father before all ages; and He is man, born from the substance of His mother in this age:

perfect God and perfect man, composed of a rational soul and human flesh;

p 18 equal to the Father with respect to His divinity, less than the Father with respect to His humanity.

Although He is God and man, He is not two, but one Christ:

one, however, not by the conversion of the divinity into flesh but by the assumption of the humanity into God;

one altogether, not by confusion of substance, but by unity of person.

For as the rational soul and flesh is one man, so God and man is one Christ,

who suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose again on the third day from the dead,

ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father, from whence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

At His coming all people will rise again with their bodies and give an account concerning their own deeds.

And those who have done good will enter into eternal life, and those who have done evil into eternal fire.

This is the catholic faith; whoever does not believe it faithfully and firmly cannot be saved.

Bible and Jesus says:

the Father is greater than I.
John 14:28

This is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and him whom you sent, Jesus Christ.
John 17:3

I think it is right to believe what Jesus says, if you are a disciple of Jesus (“Christian”).

Hi, I am new here and a new Christian. I wanted to know about the trinity. People say the 3 persons of the trinity are equal. My opinion at the moment is that the Father is at the top of the trinity over the son and holy spirit. Is this wrong to believe.

The Trinity:

The Bible teaches that there is one God (Deuteronomy 6:4) (1 Timothy 2:5) (Isaiah 45:5).

Yet, the Bible also teaches that there are distinctions within the Godhead or that there is a plural nature to God.

Here are a couple of quick points:

#1. The word Elohim (אֱלֹהִ֔ים) is both a singular and a plural noun.
#2. God refers to Himself in plural form (Genesis 1:26) (Genesis 3:22) (Genesis 11:7) (Isaiah 6:8).
#3. Plurality of God in New Testament (Matthew 28:19) (2 Corinthians 13:14) (John 14:16-20).
#4. Introductions to both the Son & Holy Spirit (Daniel 7:9-10, Daniel 7:13-14) (John 14:16)
#5. Different persons of Godhead appear at one time (Luke 3:21-22)
#6. Distinctions of Wills (Luke 22:42).
#7. Conversations Between the Godhead (Psalms 2:1-12) (Psalms 45:6-7) (Psalms 110:1) (Matthew 11:27) (John 17:24).

The Trinity is told to us in one verse within the King James Bible (Note: This verse does not appear in many Modern Translations).

“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” (1 John 5:7) (KJV).

Romans 1:20 says,
"For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:"

Meaning, even nature itself declares the Godhead (or the Trinity).

Atoms = Nucleus, Protons, Electrons.
Water Molecules = Hydrogen Atom, Hydrogen Atom, Oxygen Atom.
Man's Formation = Dust, Mist (i.e. Water), Breadth of Life.
Man Made in God's Image = Physical Body, Spirit Body, Soul.

Although the word "Trinity" is not found within the Scriptures, the word "Godhead" is used instead (Acts of the Apostles 17:29) (Romans 1:20) (Colossians 2:9).

While Jesus is 100% fully human, Jesus is also 100% fully God, and thus, He has the power of God.

#1. Jesus said He has power to raise the dead to life just as the Father had power to raise the dead (John 5:21).
#2. Hebrews 1:3 talks about how Christ held all things together by the word of His power when He purged us of our sins.
#3. Jesus said, He would raise up this Temple (His body) three days later (John 2:19).
#4. Jesus had the power to forgive sins and give eternal life (Mark 2:7) (Luke 7:44-50) (John 14:6).
#5 Jesus had power to take away the sins of the entire world (John 1:29).
#6. Jesus Christ said wherever two or three are gathered in my name, there I am among them (Matthew 18:20). This was said to the people he was around and not to just us today.
#7. Jesus knew men's thoughts (Matthew 9:4) (Matthew 12:25) (Mark 2:8) (Luke 5:22) (Luke 6:8) (Luke 9:47) (Luke 24:38).
#8. Jesus knew about the lives of others (John 2:24) (John 4:17-18) (John 4:29) (John 6:64).

God purchased us with His own blood:

“Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.” (Acts of the Apostles 20:28).

There is no Savior beside or next to God:

“I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.” (Isaiah 43:11).

“So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.” (Matthew 16:19).

Holy Spirit is God:

The Holy Spirit is called God:

“Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.” (Acts of the Apostles 5:3-4).

The Holy Spirit is on equal level with being God:

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” (Matthew 28:19).

The Holy Spirit is eternal:

“How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” (Hebrews 9:14).

The Holy Spirit is a person:

“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever;” (John 14:16).

The Holy Spirit can be grieved:

“And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.” (Ephesians 4:30).

The Holy Spirit can be blasphemed:

“And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.” (Matthew 12:32).

Important Note: Only God can be blasphemed.

The Father Sent The Holy Spirit

The Bible says that God the Father sent the Holy Spirit. Jesus said.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you (John 14:26).

The Holy Spirit does the will of God the Father. Paul wrote.

And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will (Romans 8:27).

Only because Jesus Christ is Almighty God do we have reassurance that He can save His elect from eternal damnation and eternal torment.

Now, there are two wrong extremes people have made involving the Trinity.

#1. Modalism
(Which is a belief held by United Pentecostals).

This says that there is no distinctive persons within the Godhead. That God the Father just puts on a mask and pretends to be the Son; Others believe it says all three persons are smashed together whereby the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost do not have any kind of distinctiveness anymore. But the Bible makes it clear that the Father sent the Son to die for our sins (And it was not the Son sending the Father) (1 John 4:14). The Bible makes it clear that one cannot be forgiven if they speak a word against the Holy Spirit but yet, this is not the case if one speaks a word against the Son, though (Matthew 12:32).

#2. Tritheism
(Which is a belief held by Mormons).

This says that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are three separate and distinct gods. This is polytheism or the worship of more than one God. But the Bible makes it clear that the Lord our God is one God (Deuteronomy 6:4).

Then there is the correct view of the Trinity.

The Lord our God exists as one God, but He exists as three distinct persons (i.e. The Father, the Word (Christ), and the Holy Ghost). All three persons co-existed as one God for all eternity. Also, in the Trinity, the Father and the Son and can dwell within one another despite their distinctiveness as persons within the Godhead, too. For Jesus said He dwells in the Father and the Father dwells in Him (John 14:10) (John 17:21).

I’d say relax in the Oneness of the I Am and trust Him to illumine your understanding of His Triune nature on a situational basis. It is a matter of which Person He wants to grace you with and the Person you are seeking/need—even if you don’t understand or are even aware of the need(s). The same dynamic applies when it comes to the Name(s) of God. Sometimes, the situation obviously dictates your focus, e.g., praying the “Our Father”, or thanking Jesus for His intercession and dying for you by bearing the wrath for your sin, or enjoying communion with God through the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
