What's your garden like at this time of year?

Yesterday my son was telling me that he recently found out that sakura means cherry blossom. He came across the word sakura somewhere and a pal told him its meaning. So I told him I'd recently watched a programme where the presenter went to Japan during the flowering of the trees and it was such a spectacular sight! :)

I heard about something on TV concerning the cherry blossom in Japan too, js. :) Must be beautiful to see.

Your trees, ladies, look amazing. I don't have any means of taking photos at the moment (broken camera, low-tech mobile :D) so I can't share any pics. Not that the garden warrants any just now. I plan to do some tidying up next week, and planting soon. I'm thinking of doing a border in a traditional English Cottage Garden style, but haven't decided on the plants yet.

Leaves everywhere now and most of them are from trees other than our own. :D
Do they overhang your garden, js, or is it very windy? :D Was it a beautiful autum, with the changing colours? I think you said that you had some evergreen plants too, so that you'll have some greenery during winter, if I remember rightly? Are your camellias still flowering? :)

Two children apologized for picking my daffodils. Now I know they were a delight to others. :)

Oh, how sweet of them to apologise, and nice of you to want others to enjoy your flowers. :)

I was working on that, but due to old age I got rid of most every flower.
Oh, I'm sorry about that. :( Can you get any help with it?

My garden is actually very small, which I'm pleased about as it's just enough to manage, and most things are in troughs or pots. The one bed is only a few feet long, so it's not too much work. There is a small part on which nothing grows? I was wondering about doing a small rockery there. Has anyone ever made one? :)

With winter coming on here in Australia, there is not much colour in my garden except for the cheerful poinsettias.

Yes, the poinsettias are amazing creslaw. I continued to be awed by the Lords' creation.
Small potted poinsettia plants in flower are actually sold here in December although they naturally flower in our cooler months. I suppose it is because we think they look "Christmassy" :)

We have them on sale here, in the UK, at Christmas too. They fit the red and green colour scheme I suppose! :D

BTW what is the beautiful bird in your avatar, creslaw? :)

Yes, one large tree overhangs our garden, but it's so beautiful I would never want to see it gone. It's a copper beech tree with the most gorgeous colouring. Our camellias are still hanging in there with flowers and showing no signs of fading as yet. I did see a few bursts of brilliant autumn colour, which is always such a lovely sight. Yes, greenery abounds over here with various trees and shrubs, so we never really have to look on a colourless landscape.

Did you decide to get going on a little rockery, Sue?

The copper beech sounds beautiful, js, as well as the autumnal colours. I think having a mix of deciduous and evergreens is the best possible combination for autumn and winter. How nice that your camellias are still flowering. :)

In the end I changed my mind about the rockery so I've just put a pot plant on the bit where nothing will grow. :) (I think it is due to the foundations of a brick pillar which supports the fence.) However I've planted a few things including a cosmos, which I hadn't heard of before, and a hollyhock, which I'd mistaken for a peony. :doh:They were next to each other in the garden centre and I think I just picked up the wrong pot and planted it before I'd realised my mistake. I'm happy with it but it is a taller plant than I wanted. However the slugs and snails are keeping it in check  - it must be a delicacy in their cuisine the way they are attacking it. :D
