I heard a little about this on the news in Australia. What does a "shut down" mean to people in the USA. What actually happens?
Some government workers will get back pay when it all settled. Not much more in reality.

No expert here but,
some government departments may actually close down
government employees in short time may not receive paychecks.

Maybe others in the know could add?

Military members will no longer get paid as of Feb 1st unless the shutdown ends or another emergency bill is passed like back in 2013.

For us military members, it's a scary possiblity. I know many military members who are currently living paycheck to paycheck. This could possibly ruin them.

im praying that the bigwigs in DC fix this before feb 1st so that military members can continue to provide and take care of their families.

I am sure stable genius will straighten this out in no time. Of course if he is such a genius why didn’t he avert it in first place ?

Ah well, I am sure normal Trump apologists will give few reasons.

I guess some didn't note they are blaming the shutdown on Chuck Schumer and the Democrats.

Trump is trying his best to make a deal with the DACA ones. Something past presidents have only talked about.

Trump shutdown the government. Not the Reps. or the Dems., they overwhelmingly agree on DACA. But Trump keeps changing his mind about what he will sign.

When they talk about the government shutdown, they’re going to be talking about the president of the United States, who the president was at that time. They’re not going to be talking about who was the head of the House, the head the Senate, who’s running things in Washington. So I really think the pressure is on the president.

On the other hand, the president was willing to give the Dems much of what they wanted, but they decided to filibuster any attempt at keeping the government open anyway. So since it takes 60 votes to break a filibuster and the GOP has only 51 seats in the Senate, I have no idea why Schumer would be willing to gamble on the American people buying the argument that "The Republicans control all branches of the government, therefore they are the ones who shut down the government."

Really? What was he willing to give them? The Reps say that they don't know what the president will sign because he keeps changing what he says depending on who he has been talking to.

Just like always both sides blame the other while in reality they share the blame. Politics.
I'm not blaming the Reps. when their Great White leader can't make up his mind.

Flake, Graham, and others agree. But there are those who don't want to give him something that he won't sign.
Yes I agree but they can put a bill on his desk and force him to take his stance. They have done that for years.
