WASHINGTON—In a sign of growing U.S. pressure on Israel over the war in Gaza, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “has lost his way” and called for Israeli elections aimed at choosing a new government.
Netanyahu is “allowing his political survival to take precedence over the best interests of Israel,” Schumer said in a speech on the Senate floor Thursday. He said Israel “cannot hope to succeed as a pariah opposed by the rest of the world.”
Netanyahu - is the duly elected Prime Minister of Israel, and American Alli - American Congressmembers have no business calling for the over throw of a government regardless of method. He has no right or authority to call for an election, regardless of the reason. This is interference in another countries government.

What audacity to believe he knows what 'is best interest" for another nation. Using your position and funding to pressure another nation to do what you want is worse than quid pro quo and he should be censured and made to apologize to Israel.

Given the poor handling of Gaza and turning it into a wasteland going after a small group of terrorists, it may be time to let Israel go and let them handle it on their own.

I believe you are missing the point of the thread -

American Politicians should not be calling for the overthrow of the leader of an independent nation as part of a pressure campaign to get results he agrees with.

It's fine to say you do not support a leader and lobby for policies that reflect your feelings - it is a totally different scenario to call for his removal through an election to keep funds flowing.

Quid Pro Quo - Quid pro quo means "something given or received for something else." There is nothing inherently illegal in giving or receiving something in exchange for something else, but in legal contexts quid pro quo often refers to something that is in fact illegal, such as if a company gives a government official money in exchange for receiving a contract that rightly should be given to whatever company is best able to meet the requirements for the contract.
Politicians can be removed from office for doing a whole lot less than publicly calling for the removal of a countries leader.

<Blink>

So it was wrong to call for the overthrow of Sadam Hussien?
Not to mention Qaddafi, the Taliban, Milosevic, Mobutu, Cedras, Castro, etc, etc, etc?

Fine, but he is asking for another election, not a revolution. Schumer doesn't have any power to make it happen, but I think he is right in that Netanyahu has gone too far and should be stopped before it hurts the Israeli people more. The seeds of the next wave of terrorists have been sown thanks to Netanyahu's government's harsh invasion of Gaza. How big that crop will be will depend on Israel.

Were they Allies? Were we financially helping them?

That would be the difference.

Thank you for your opinion -

Schumer is still publicly calling for the overthrow of a foreign government. He is calling for the overthrow as part of a pressure campaign connected to money.

That is quid pro quo -

I don't think it is quid pro quo, but there is public pressure on this issue. Ignoring that is a peril of every politician.

We are funding Israel quite handsomely to support our interests in the region. If we determine that they are no longer doing so, maybe we should just pull the plug.

A small group of terrorists? You have got to be kidding. Hamas has demonstrably proved that they have a literal army, with battalions of Hamas soldiers dedicated to killing Israelis.

Seems like that would give the U.S. more justification to call for something like this. I suppose we could just stop funding them until they get their house in order.

Pressuring the Israelis to elect a new Prime Minister is not calling for the "overthrow of the government." Would you rather no allow the government to change a policy which is not in our best interests? Or would you rather we just stop subsidizing that policy.

Battalions? Squads more like.

Still, does that justify smashing flat Gaza?

Funding? We have no obligation to support genocide. Instead of all our reprimands, we should just stop our aid to Israel. That will speak louder than words.

I support Israrl in just war against its enemies. Justice went out the window 30,000 lives ago.

An election is not an overthrow but it makes sense how some of you on the right have put it in your heads that they’re the same thing.
