Jason Kessler files for Permit to Hold Unite the Right Anniversary Rally

Jason Kessler, the organizer of the Unite the Right rally, has applied for a permit to hold a 2-day anniversary rally in Charlottesville next August.

Kessler filed a city of Charlottesville special event application request asking for a permit to hold a 2-day rally in Emancipation Park on August 11 - August 12, 2018.
...
Miriam Dickler, the city of Charlottesville spokesperson, says that permit is being reviewed but did not offer any timeline for making a decision.

That the Charlottesville council would even consider allowing this smug little squirt to hold another rally in town after what happened this past August is a disgrace. Surely there is a public safety concern that can put the kibosh on this.

Kessler's got a lot of gall to go back to Charlottesville.

The first amendment means we support the rights of others to say things that make our skin crawl. I may vehemently disagree with this man, but I support his right to free speech.

I don't; not in this case. He doesn't need to be in Charlottesville triumphantly marching on the anniversary of Heather Heyer's death. The last time these losers were in town, three people died.

Then where do we draw the line? And who gets to decide? I'd rather stay off the slippery slope.

It's like I said in the OP: public safety. The last time Kessler was in town, three people died. Now, granted, only one of those was confirmed to have been indirectly caused by his rally, but even one person dying is one person too many.

Who should decide? The people of Charlottesville. They don't want Kessler back there. He barely got out of town in one piece the last time.

So constitutional rights are subject to mob rule? All the more reason to defend them.

No...the right of people not to see their city co-opted by outside Nazis should trump some little squirt that comes in there to rabble-rouse.

So a single rabble-rouser can outweigh the wishes of an entire city? Good to know the Supreme Court is on the side of people in Charlottesville.
Ringo
Yeah, groups of people are not allowed to deprive others of their constitutional rights. It's kind of fundamental.

OK. I'm going to come to your house and protest in front of it. Maybe I'll run one of your family members over with my car while I'm there.

You can't do anything about it, because I'll obtain a permit to protest there. Your family's rights don't trump my individual right to come there and rabble-rouse as I please, and then return there a year later to triumphantly march down the street. After all, my 'anti-Phil 1:21' campaign deserves an equal place at the table as vaunted ideas like tax reform, women's rights, and other -isms, because I say so. And hey - my side won last year's national election, so we're as legitimate as anyone else, right?

What's that? You don't want me at your house? You're upset because someone in my group of rabble-rousers already killed one of your family members? Tough; your rights don't supersede mine. And by the way: your family coming out to counterprotest against me just proves that they're as violent as me. Never mind that I or someone from my side ran over your family member; by defending the area around your home, you committed violence and are equally as guilty.

So glad we have people online that are so concerned about poor Jason Kessler's rights. He's such a persecuted man after all.

Appeal to emotion.

If it's "not a compelling argument", then you should find it easy to refute it without accusing me of a logical fallacy and calling it a day. I'll be waiting, because that should be hilarious.

I got a permit; the city of Milwaukee or wherever you live has to let me protest! Your neighbors don't want me and my protestors there? Well, too bad. The Constitution says you have to let me protest, under any circumstances.

That is your right.

Friend, you can take it out on me if that'll make you feel better. But this isn't about who, it's about what. And that "what" is the constitution that guarantees all of our rights.

May not be my right, but that can't stop me. I have a permit. Protestors must always be allowed to protest if they have a permit, no matter the circumstances, or whether a majority of people don't want a tiny vocal minority to be there. My individual right to stand in front of your house for two days and celebrate running over your family member with my car must be honored at all costs. The Constitution says so.

The city cannot issue YOU a permit to protest on MY property.

The city can REFUSE to issue the permit. Just because someone applies for a permit does not mean a permit will be granted.

I'm going to protest on the public road in front of your house, so you can't stop me. And since I filed a permit, I must be allowed to protest. It's in the Constitution; you can't deny me my individual rights!
