  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi,

Are there any members who like classical music? If so, I would be curious to know what your favorite pieces are, or favorite composers. I hope I'm not the only classical music geek here. (and I'm not even a 'geek').

I do like classical music but can't say I'm very knowledgeable about it.
Two of the things I love are Pachelbel's Canon and
Jules Massenet's Meditation from Thaïs. The former sends shivers down my spine and the latter is just beautiful, I think

Hi LinaBellus,

I'm not the biggest fan of Classical Music, but I do have a number of pieces I REALLY like. Vivaldi's Four Seasons is one of them, Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet" is another (below)--Awesome!!

Hi, welcome to the forum in Jesus name, yes, I love classical music...at the moment I am playing Scarlatti, and also Grieg's Wedding Day.

and yes tansy, I like your pieces too. I used to play both pieces on the pipe organ in my days as a Church organist. Now retired and back on the piano.

Hard to pick a 'favorite'. I rather like most of Aaron Copeland's work. Tchaikovsky always moves and interests me. Of course I like the usual suspects, Brahms, Beethoven and Mozart. Hildegarde of Bingen is interesting.

And pretty much anything Liberace played.

I don't like John Cage. How's that?

Hi, Lina,

I wouldn't call myself a classical music fan, but I've spent many hours at opera concerts and listen to classical music rather often (among my many other preferred genres) and appreciate it greatly.

The one piece I enjoy most is Beethoven's Kreutzer on violin:

Orchestral music and opera is just generally great, but it can get stale sometimes for me.

I find Gil Shaman to be very smooth on the violin, and in my opinion the best to attempt Carmen Fantasy. "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (first movement)" by Mozart is another.

Do you have any recommendations?

One of the questions that's difficult to answer because there's so much. I suppose if I had to pick a representative, then my favorite is probably Wagner. Maybe Verdi. Maybe Orff. I like Holst. Basil Poledouris is contemporary but his music is so great it deserves a mention, if we remove any temporal constraints to the reply.

Probably my favorites are Tannhäuser, and the Ring cycle. Don Carlos. I don't know, there's a lot and I forget the names.

One aspect of classical I like is that it comes in so many different incarnations modern musicians taking classical pieces and showing at one point "classical" used to be modern. Like this one:
tulc(might want to turn down the volume on this one) :D

My favorites are a mixed bunch. Beethoven 9th Symphony 4th movement, Copeland, Ode to the Common Man, Bizet's Carmen, I like a lot of operas. I also like Leonard Bernstein, and some Steven Sondheim. But there are a lot more.

Just remembered, I love Handel's Messiah..the whole thing, not just the Halleluiah Chorus. It's so encouraging to listen to when doing housework or whatever, as it basically goes through the whole Bible, reminding us of our hope in Christ.

I love both! The piece by Prokofiev from "Romeo and Juliet" is actually called Montagues and Capulets. :) But it is awesome, indeed!

Tchaikovsky is my all time favorite, I love his music! Oh, and for some reason I don't really like John Cage either ??
