• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So the conclusion is that in the first 20 posts - on what appears to be the first 2 pages of this thread -- all of the mundane retorts against the Ten commandments have been fully refuted and not only this - but the Sabbath commandment has been affirmed for all the saints.

The "result" -- the "proof" is going to be seen that on this and on several other threads - when a rather mundane objection surfaces it will be compellingly refuted by a mere quote of one of the posts on the first two pages of this thread, so long as the 'details' of the point being made are followed closely.

I don't say that no expanded explanation may come up - just that the information is all here on two pages within 20 posts -- which contain 9 posts that are the key irrefutable posts answering a great many objections to the subject, if not all.

List one post in this thread that any claims against the 10 commandments has been fully refuted?

"10 Reasons why the Sabbath is not just for Jews.

1) Adam and Eve were not Jewish. "God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it" (Genesis 2:3) before sin entered. "Sanctified" means "to be set apart for holy use." The only ones in the Garden of Eden for whom the Sabbath was “set apart” were Adam and Eve, who weren’t Jewish.

2) "The Sabbath was made for man." Mark 2:27. Jesus said this. It was "made" in the Garden of Eden before it was "written" down on Mount Sinai. The Sabbath was "made" for "man," not just Jews.

3) The other nine commandments are not "just for Jews." God wrote "Ten Commandments" on stone, not just nine (See Deut. 4:12, 13; Ex. 20). Does “Do not commit adultery,”“Do not murder,”“Do not steal,” and “Do not bear false witness” apply "only to Jews"?

4) "The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God." Exodus 20:10. God calls the Sabbath, "my holy day." Isaiah 58:13. The Bible never calls it "the Sabbath of the Jews." It isn’t their Sabbath, but God's.

5) The Sabbath commandment is for the "stranger" too. The fourth commandment itself says the "stranger" is to rest on the Sabbath. Exodus 20:10.“Strangers” are non-Jews, or Gentiles. Thus the Sabbath applies to them too. Read also Isaiah 56:6.

6) Isaiah 56 said Gentiles should keep the Sabbath. "Also the sons of the stranger ... every one that keeps the Sabbath ... for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people." Isaiah 56:6, 7. Thus the Sabbath is for Gentiles and “all people,” not just for Jews.

7) "All" mankind will keep the Sabbath in the New Earth. In "the new earth ... from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, says the Lord." Isaiah 66:22, 23. Here God says that “all flesh” will be keeping the Sabbath in “the new earth.” If this is the case – and it is – shouldn’t we start now?

8) Gentiles kept the Sabbath in the Book of Acts. "The Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath ... Paul and Barnabas ... persuaded them to continue in the grace of God."' Acts 13:42, 43. Here saved-by-grace Gentiles kept the Sabbath (see also verse 44). See also Acts 17 and Acts 18... of them with Sabbath after Sabbath worship services and Gospel teaching in the synagogues.

9) "The law" [of Ten Commandments] is for "all the world," not just for Jews. Paul wrote these words. Read Romans 2:17-23; 3:19, 23.

10) Luke was a Gentile who kept the Sabbath. Luke was the only Gentile who wrote any New Testament books (he wrote The Gospel According to St. Luke and The Acts of the Apostles). Luke traveled with Paul and wrote, "On the Sabbath we went out of the city by a river side." Acts 16:13. It was the seventh-day Sabbath, the memorial of the creation (see Ex. 20:11). Both Luke and Paul knew it...
Dear reader may I suggest you read the Bible and compare its text with what Bob says. You'll find they don't line up. Gentiles as a whole didn't go to the synagogue which Bob equates with keeping the Sabbath. Almost the whole city proves this. It was very unusual and worth mentioning.

Dear reader may I suggest you read the Bible and compare its text with what Bob says.

Amen to that! I have so many Bible texts on the first and 2nd page of this thread - within the first 20 posts - it would be well to look them up and study those texts closely.

Because... Bible details matter.

And as always remember when reading the Bible to check "man-made-traditions at the door" so to speak.

You'll find they don't line up.
Until you actually read the Bible and allow the Bible details to speak for themselves.

Gentiles as a whole didn't go to the synagogue
Gentile believers however did go to the synagogue for worship and Bible study - Sabbath after Sabbath even when listening to pure Gospel sermons - as we saw in Acts 13, Acts 17, Acts 18.

Acts 15
19 Therefore I judge that we should not trouble those from among the Gentiles who are turning to God, 20 but that we write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood. 21 For Moses has had throughout many generations those who preach him in every city, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath.”

Acts 18
4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded both Jews and Greeks.

Acts 17
17 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 2 Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.” 4 And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas.

Acts 13
42 So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath.

which Bod equates with keeping the Sabbath.
Acts 13
44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, “It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us:
‘I have set you as a light to the Gentiles,
That you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth.’”

48 Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.

"Almost the whole city" proves this. It was very unusual and worth mentioning.

It is the "gentiles" that BEFORE that Sabbath insist that the Word be preached to them "the NEXT Sabbath" -- not the Jews.

Thus it is THEY who invite their non-believing gentile friends to show up. And the Jews became envious of such a great result.

As we could all agree -- Bible details matter.

List one post in this thread that any claims against the 10 commandments has been fully refuted?

All of them have been complained about and objected to -- none refuted.

What was 1 claim that you've made effort to show the biblical perspective on?

So then Post #1 - is generally the place to start if you want to make a point about just one of the posts.

That is the OP.

But I don't mind if you prefer to pick another one.

Are God's Ten Commandments still valid ??

That is the primary question to be answered on this section of the board.

And the irrefutable response from scripture is ... "yes".

========================

Here we have the NT text providing examples from the TEN Commandments -- affirming them as "still" valid.

And of course scripture is -- true.

=========================

Matt 19
And someone came to Him and said, “Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?” 17 And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” 18 Then he *said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “
You shall not commit murder;
You shall not commit adultery;
You shall not steal;
You shall not bear false witness;
19 Honor your father and mother;

and
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

"what matters is Keeping the Commandments of God" 1Cor 7:19

"do we then make void the Law of God by our faith? God forbid! In fact we ESTABLISH the LAW" Rom 3:31

What law? The Law that condemns all mankind as sinners -

Rom 3
19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

That same law - same chapter

"do we then make void the Law of God by our faith? God forbid! In fact we ESTABLISH the LAW" Rom 3:31

Rom 7
7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

Rom 13

8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
9 For this,

Thou shalt not commit adultery,

Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal,

Thou shalt not bear false witness,

Thou shalt not covet;

and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Matt 19 -- before the cross. The Commandments of Christ -

16 And someone came to Him and said, “Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?” 17 And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” 18 Then he *said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said,
“You shall not commit murder;
You shall not commit adultery;
You shall not steal;
You shall not bear false witness;
19 Honor your father and mother; and
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Ten commandments are not binding upon Christians, their validity is a voluntary issue for us. They are binding upon non-Christian Jews however by decree in Exodus which is what you constantly abuse to try and bind non Israelis to the Law.

As with all the Word of God - we have free will and can choose to follow it or not.

in Christ,

Bob

And of course there is the issue of John and Christ when it comes to the "Commandments of God" -- what are they talking about??

Word of God states that the TEN Commandments are in fact the "Commandments of God"

Bible texts both NT and OT about God's Commandments - Showing that the TEN Commandments are assigned the title "in scripture" as being "Commandments of God" -- and as also being "The Word of God"

10 Commandments are –
“Commandments of God” Neh 10:29
“Law of God” Neh 10:29
“Word of God” Mark 7:13
“Commandment of God” Mark 7:6-13
NT “Scripture” James 2:8
NT “Law” – James 2:9-11
NT Commandments Eph 6:2, Rom 13:9, Romans 7:7-10

John does not "delete the Bible and start over" as I am sure we all agree.

So then if we listen "to John" we find this --

It is John that reminds us "the scriptures cannot be broken" John 10:34 --- instead of "scripture is deleted and only what I say from here on is to be accepted"

It is John that reminds us that even BEFORE the Cross - the commandments of God - of scripture that cannot be broken are in harmony with the Commandments of Christ - John 14:15. "IF you Love Me KEEP My Commandments"

Coming directly from Ex 20:7 "love Me and Keep my commandments" and of course "before the cross"
Note: Galatians 4 makes the case that Christ was perfectly fulfilling the law at the pre-cross point.
Matt 5 Christ tells us that his 'fulfill' is not "abolish".
Rom 3:31 "Do then make void the Law of God by our faith? God forbid! in fact we establish the Law of God"

It is John that reminds us that Christ spoke nothing of his own - but rather all that He spoke is nothing but the Word of God - the Commandment of God - nothing about Christ setting aside what God said.

John 14: 10 "Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works."

John 12:
49 "" For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the
Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak."

It is John the reminds us that "Sin is transgression of the LAW" 1John 3:4.

And James reminds us that to break the Law is to "sin" and James quotes the law giving several examples of it

When Jesus is asked "which commandments?" or as some translations have it "which ones" Jesus gives examples --
Matt 19:17-19

if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” 18 He said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said,
“You shall not commit murder;
You shall not commit adultery;
You shall not steal;
You shall not bear false witness;
19 Honor your father and mother; and
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Jesus leaves out "do not covet" because he will make that point in his following statement - and so we see his focus on "Love our neighbor as yourself" - but he leaves out the commandments in this list related to "Love God with all your heart" Deut 6:5 - because in not loving his neighbor the man does not Love God.

It is John that says
1 John 5
"Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and whoever loves the Father loves the child born of Him.
2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments.
3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments
are not burdensome. 1 John 5:1-3

This is not a circular argument "by this we know we Love God -- if we Love God" - as most will agree.
He is not saying "by this we know that we love the Children of God - when we love God and love the Children of God" - as some will also agree.

John relates this to all sin -- which as John says is "transgression of the Law".

1 John 3:4 "sin IS transgression of the Law"

Paul makes this same point in Romans 7 -
7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.”
8 But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead.

John makes it clear what he means by "keep His commandments" in 1 John 2.

It means "walk as Christ walked" -- which was in perfect obedience to the Law of God -- not just some of it.

1 John 2
3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.
4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.
6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
7 Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning.
8 Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.
9 He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now.
10 He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him.
11 But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

And of course Christ did not sin -- no not even before the cross. So then John writes
1John 2:1 "These things I write to you that you sin not" showing that he is calling for us to "walk as Christ walked'.

Yes indeed we may stumble and fall - but we cannot say that John does not call us to "walk as He (Christ) walked".

Is it any wonder that even the majority of pro-sunday scholarship (not just D.L. Moody) agree that the Ten Commandments are included in the moral law of God binding on the saints from Eden to this very day?

Question - is John replacing/deleting God's commandments for NT Christians?

Let's take a simple example.

Lev 19:18 "Love your neighbor as yourself" -
Also continued unchanged in the NT

John says that restoring old commandments appears to those unfamiliar with them - to be new
commandments
7 Brethren, I write no new commandmentto you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning.
8 Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.
9 He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now.

Notice that Christ did not think "Love your neighbor as yourself" Lev 19:18 had been abolished.

Matt 19
And someone came to Him and said, “Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?” 17 And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” 18 Then he *said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “
You shall not commit murder;
You shall not commit adultery;
You shall not steal;
You shall not bear false witness;
19 Honor your father and mother;

and
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Paul does not say that Lev 19:18 is abolished either

Rom 13
8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
9 For this,
Thou shalt not commit adultery,
Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal,
Thou shalt not bear false witness,
Thou shalt not covet;

and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

James does not think that Lev 19:18 is abolished

James 2
8 If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” (Lev 19:18) you are doing well.

since someone has brought up the subject of John MacArthur - on a related thread -- I am adding this post to the TEN Commandments latest thread.

As a public service of course.

The greatest barrier between Jew and Gentile was the ceremonial law, the Law of commandments contained in ordinances. The feasts, sacrifices, offerings, laws of cleanliness and purification, and all other such distinctive outward commandments for the unique separation of Israel from the nations were abolished.

That God’s moral law was not abolished is clear from the phrase contained in ceremonies. His moral law reflects His own holy nature and therefore can never change (cf. Matt. 5:17–19). That is the law which for the Jews was summarized in the Ten Commandments and which for all men is written on their hearts (Rom. 2:15) and still commanded of them (Matt. 22:37–40; Rom. 13:8–10). Jesus summarized God’s moral law still further by declaring, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you” (John 13:34). The Ten Commandments, like all of God’s moral laws, are but the structured and particularized love that God still requires (James 2:8).

<<<That God’s moral law was not abolished is clear from the phrase contained in ceremonies.>>>

Per definition then the Sabbath was abolished because the Sabbath was and still is and to be, must always be <<contained in ceremon(y)>>.

“The Sabbath OF THE LORD” is “a keeping for the PEOPLE of the Sabbath” or it’s an oxymoron.

This is -- a good question and it appears that John is in fact not deleting the Bible OT or NT.

And thus in the NT the term "Scripture" almost always refers to the OT.

Question - is John replacing/deleting God's commandments for NT Christians?

Let's take a simple example.

No. II Pet 3:16

almost always allows for 1 or two exceptions - but even in 2Peter 3:16 "the rest of scripture" is the OT.

so maybe I should have said "always".

Acts 17:11

OK have it your way with the word rest. That implies additional material in the same category, thus Paul's letters are regarded as Scripture by Peter.

I am not arguing against Paul as an inspired Bible writer - I am arguing that the NT saints still held the OT text to be binding on NT saints - authoritative scripture.

I could have proven the same point with the phrase "It is written" and "the Holy Spirit says" for example.

All references in the NT - to the continued authority of the OT text.

And so it is no wonder that even the majority of your own pro-sunday scholarship admits to the continued binding authority of God's TEN Commandments on the saints today.

in Christ,

Bob

Except they didn't hold it as "binding" on NT saints, because it's not. You are right though in seeing it as "binding" . You still miss the Cross entirely....and the Cross changed EVERYTHING.

The story I see you're trying to make, is that: we're required to obey the commandments and the law because they're mentioned in the New Testament as scriptures to obey.

Truth is, you dont really consider the fact that Paul was chosen by Jesus to teaches all the doctrines to the Gentiles. Your perspective is to find isolated text that appears to say that Christians are commanded to keep the law.

Good luck with that:D:D:D:hahaha:

If Jesus ever said: Luk 16:16
The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.

You have some explaining to do.

Turns out -- "in real life" over half of these examples of holding up the OT as the "authority" for NT doctrine and practice - is the work of Paul for gentiles.

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;

James 2:8
If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law according to the Scripture, " YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF," you are doing well.

James 2:23
and
the Scripture was fulfilled which says, " AND ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS," and he was called the friend of God.

James 4:5

do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: " He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us"?

1 Peter 2:6
For
this is contained in Scripture:" BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A CHOICE STONE, A PRECIOUS CORNER stone,AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED."

2 Peter 1:20
But know this first of all, that
no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation,

2 Peter 3:16
as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also
the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.
