Scientists are not making up the ratio of U and Pb isotopes in zircons. Scientists are not making up the fact that U/Pb dating can not be used for trees because they all start with different amounts of Pb.

Well, not living trees, anyways. Dating only works on dead stuff. And it only tells us how long ago it died, not how long it lived.

I'll be charitable and assume your poor grasp of English has led you to use an inappropriate phrase. To make something up, in the way you are using it, implies inventing a falsehood. If your intent is to convey the idea of proposing a hypothesis, it would be much better for you to write something like:

I meant dating in general, carbon 14 dating is used on plant life that isn't too old. Yes, I know counting the rings works, you learn that sort of thing as a little kid.
