Methinks weather forecasts ought not to be taken seriously.

"Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee. Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame...." -- Isaiah 37:13-14

"Therefore night shall be unto you, that ye shall not have a vision; and it shall be dark unto you, that ye shall not divine; and the sun shall go down over the prophets, and the day shall be dark over them. Then shall the seers be ashamed, and the diviners confounded: yea, they shall all cover their lips; for there is no answer of God." -- Micah 3:6-7

"That the sun will not rise to-morrow is no less intelligible a proposition, and implies no more contradiction, than the affirmation, that it will rise." -- David Hume, philosopher, 1772

Hold on a second, bro.

This isn't just any weather pattern, this is La Niña!

You know who La Niña is, don't you? Jesus' sister!

These guys would have a fit if anyone said that Katrina was sent from God, but higher academia names these weather patterns after El Niño and La Niña, and they don't bat an eye.

Keep the Ten Commandments off the courthouse lawns, take IN GOD WE TRUST off our coins, don't teach God in science class; but deep in the halls of higher academia, God gets ridiculed so subtlety, these guys don't even know it.

Steady on there.

It's not about not knowing it - I wasn't able to find anything linking the phrase La Nina to a claimed sister of Jesus. El nino was a reference to Christ as it occurs near Christmas - doesn't necessarily mean la nina is.

And why is a sister of Christ making you go bluhh? Is it a sin to have a sister? He did have brothers.

El Niño-Southern Oscillation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

wiki link said:
An early recorded mention of the term "El Niño" to refer to climate occurs in 1892, when Captain Camilo Carrillo told the Geographical society congress in Lima that Peruvian sailors named the warm northerly current "El Niño" because it was most noticeable around Christmas.

But no, it's always higher academia's fault.

Not bitter or prejudiced at all, are you AV?

Now we're going to have to microparse my post, aren't we?

Did I not use the word "subtlety"?

You might want to look it up, Cabal.

Jesus indeed had [step] sisters.

Mark 6:3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.

But none at His level that could change weather patterns.

ETA: I'm not going to spend the next ten posts spoon-feeding you information about what I said: 532 .

You've heard of it? Wow. Could have fooled us with how it seems that literally everything is "higher academia's" fault, no matter how ridiculous.

You might want to look it up, Cabal.

I did. Got nothing. So provide some backup, not least that this is some higher academia based conspiracy to ridicule your beliefs, or this is just more prejudiced assertion from you.

But none at His level that could change weather patterns.

Or perhaps "la nina" is just a corollary to "el nino" as it means "the girl" where "el nino" means "the boy" and is not actually claiming that Christ had a sister as powerful as him.

And quite frankly, I think you're just whipping up indignation where none exists, because there seems to be nothing online about how calling a weather pattern "la nina" is a huge offensive deal.

ETA: I'm not going to spend the next ten posts spoon-feeding you information about what I said: 532 .

So I should take you at your word? /thread off.

I'm not going to play games with you, Cabal.

Here's my last post to you on this subject:

Did you read the quote from the wiki link I posted?

Your quote has no mention of who named it either, unlike mine - and it's nothing to do with "higher academia."

Take your wilfully ignorant prejudice, and shove it where the sun doesn't hike.

Except when the real Christmas shows up, what will we be hearing ad nauseum from the academically-elite?

That's right -- time to start that junk about Saturnalia and college-knows-what-all-else deities, and how Christmas stole the true meaning of December 25th, and Christ was really born in September or November, etc and so-froth.

How's come higher academia isn't up in arms that Jesus gets the preeminence for these December 25th weather patterns, and not all these other pagan deities we hear from their halls?

I'll tell you why:

It's because higher academia knows Who the true target is, doesn't it?

Leave it to a literalist to get bent out of shape about details that are literally nowhere to be found in the Bible.

But you're right, why should a Christian be concerned about a silly thing like resorting to the customs of false religions?

Jeremiah 10:1-4 said:
Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel: Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

Oh wait.

-----------------------

How's come higher academia isn't up in arms that Jesus gets the preeminence for these December 25th weather patterns, and not all these other pagan deities we hear from their halls?

Hm....because one thing has to do with acknowledging pagan influences and the other has to do with acknowledging Christian influences, perhaps? Crazy idea, I know....

I'll tell you why:

It's because higher academia knows Who the true target is, doesn't it?

Wow, what a citation-filled post! Not the postings of a butthurt blowhard in the slightest, and it also totally addressed the idea that higher academia named two weather cycles El nino and La nina purely as part of some conspiracy to offend a grand total of one Christian!

I am so confused and the fever isn't helping. Do I need to put on my tinfoil hat then step into a Faraday cage and then go 1000m under the earth?

:) A more measured response might be to ensure you have a sound pair of wellies, a winter coat, a scarf, gloves and an umbrella.

Given these simple precautions, I have no doubt at all you will manage to survive even the amazingly unexpected phenomenon of a 'wet, snowy winter'. After all, in the UK at least, what other kind is there? :)

Ah, good old England. How I don't miss year after year of long cold winters, where temperatures don't rise above 10ºC for months on end. :) By contrast, here in my new home of Australia, the peak temp usually doesn't get below 15 here during the day in winter and rarely gets below 5 at night. The second day of spring was last week and saw temps of 27. Bliss.

Trust me. The UK is a dangerous place filled with man eating monsters and weather so deadly that Chuck Norris himself is scared of. :p

Yeah the UK winter is a hail of rain and sleet with days of snow. I hate it.

But you have deadly spiders so you lose.

Thanks. I'll take that as a nice thing

But it would be safe down there other than mole and crap people and the chance of a massive meteor melting the crust.
