He was called a drunk by his advisaries, so he must have at least drank some wine.
You can't get drunk on Welch's Purple Grape Juice......no matter how much of it you drink. You're heart will say thank you, tough. :D

I would like to suggest the wine Jesus drank probably was not the alcohol volume of wine today.

What brings me to this conclusion is, people during colonial times drank alcoholic beverages because the water was not fit to drink. The alcohol volume of the beverages drank during colonial times was about 2.3%.
This is not quite right. One popular drink in those days was fortified wines such as Madeira and Port. Thes wines had the regular alcohol content of wine but had brandy added to them. They were pretty strong drinks.

Beers have the lowest alcohol content, most of them are below 5% alcohol.

Remember the Pilgrims did not reach their goal of Virginia and settled at Plymouth because the ran out of beer on their ship.

In Christ,
Kenith

I have wondered about these verses in Proverbs.
Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.
32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
Also what does it mean about mingling it/..
Thanks..Kim

Wine can be dangerous. There are constant warnings in Scripture not to become a drunkard. At the same time wine is called a blessing and the lack of wine is called a curse.

THe Scriptures make clear that it is a good gift from God, but one that must be treated with respect. Kinda like giving a teenager a car. It can be a great gift, but i abused it can be deadly.

Hey HK,

Yes, my name is pronounced Kenneth. My dad came me the aberrant spelling so that it would go along with my last name, which is of French origin and in English it is not pronounced they way it is spelled.

I guess he figured since I had to explain the last name I may as well do the same with the first.

AS to the specific meaning on those words, I will not venture to say, but the context of Prov. 23 is advice to a soon to stay away from loose women and don't set around and drink all day. Wine is deadly when that is your lifestyle.

Coram Deo,
Kenith

I have a question. I hope I can ask it in this thread since it is about wine.

I have heard (from a Pastor friend of mine) that the old Jewish custom was that a father would put away a cask of wine at the birth of a daughter, and then one cask each year on he birthday, so that when she got married, there would be wine for the wedding feast. The first cask put away would be the first one brought out becasue the more aged wine was a better quality. Then, as St. John writes in his Gospel (chapter 2) "when the guests had drunk freely" the newer less quality wine was brought out.
Is this actually an old Jewish tradition?

Why has Christian society in the US gotten to the point where we need to question whether Jesus actually drank alcohol?

It has to do with those who mistakingly believe that alcohol is evil.

"Things" are not evil. People are.

Jesus said, "It is not what goes into a man that defiles him, but what comes out." In other words, evil eminates from the heart, not from external "things."

Once we had this huge bottle of grape juice that sat forgotten after it was opened. It fermented pretty quickly.

Wine is wine. Juice is juice. If it was supposed to be unfermented juice, then why has there been little valid academic debate on the subject? No worries about the translation of the word "wine", nothing. Nothing to suggest that the wine spoken of, which was taken in moderation, was ever juice.

I think some people just have to face the fact that in the Bible, He drank wine. It would be like the organic wine of today, and it wouldn't be some sort of juice that is mislabeled as wine. Moderate drinking of wine is not harmful unless you are pregnant.

If someone has the conviction to not drink alcoholic drinks, that's wonderful, as long as don't try to make it seem like those without that conviction are doing something Biblically wrong.

Good afternoon friends, and happy Sunday.

This topic shows up here in GT pretty often, and there are probably three or four thousand posts arguing this point. Before long, our brothers and sisters from the SDA will show up and the thread will take the usual course.

i don't drink.

and i don't think there is anything wrong with Christians (or anyone else) drinking alcohol in moderation, so long as it does not seriously impair your thinking or decision making.

yes, as far as I can tell from Scripture, it is quite probable that Jesus drank alcohol in His earthly lifetime

So true LutherNut. Scripture says:
1 Tim 4:4-5
4 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,
