  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The degradation of "spirituality"

We see it a great deal on this forum. Spirituality gets appropriated to support political biases.

And yet, what else can we do? For spirituality manifests itself in our daily lives, decisions and biases. We seek to apply God's justice and precepts to ours social milieu. I think tour main problem is that we are in too much of a hurry. We want to act on what we think we already know rather than listen openly in silence to a deeper truer instruction. And we want to force our view ,or at least argue it, with those who have other views. And so spirituality degrades into an intellectual contest and is no longer spirituality at all.

What Sort of Preventative Treatment, Should the State Fund???

Rather than focussing on the (VERY expensive) preventative medicine that
currently the medical insurance companies MUST pay for (such as preventative
HIV medicine, that may const $30,000 a year), Christians should be thinking
about the general questions...

1 Does every citizen have some human RIGHT to have the state pay for ANY
preventative medicine?

2 What are the criteria under which the state SHOULD pay for preventative
medicine, for a citizen?

3 Do parents have the RIGHT to reject ANY preventative medicine treatment,
for their children? Under what criteria?

4 Should parents be allowed to reject preventative medicine, IF the result
does not affect the population, as a whole?

5 *** Where is the line, between the preventative medicine treatment that
Christians OUGHT TO comply with, as opposed to preventative medicine
decisions that the Christian Moral-Ethical model does not really address?
---------- ----------

Instead of simply getting angry, when this topic comes up, Christians
should openly debate these questions.

As for (1), I reject this claim. Because that blank assertion that the state
should pay for ALL preventative medicine, ignores the topic of personal
responsibility.

As for (2), the state (I assert) should pay for preventative medicine, IF
the preventative medicine has been proven to be effective, in rigorous
scientific studies, AND IF the resulting disease would substantially effect
the health of citizens who are not directly involved in the decision of those
who refuse the preventative treatment. As an extreme example of this, there
is no known "preventative" treatment for road rage. BUT, road rage results
in all sorts of damage to citizens, every year. HOWEVER, the psychological
"state" of a person can often be diagnosed as some sort of mental
dysfunction, that CAN be diagnosed by psychiatrists. Although psychological
dysfunctions may not be SPECIFIC to committing road rage, I assert that the
state has a moral-ethical ought to try to prevent certain citizens from driving
a vehicle. (There is the same situation, with owning firearms.)
---------- ----------

Unfortunately, some Christians reject the modern scientific methodology of
double-blind studies, to determine whether or not a treatment effectively
prevents some disease or dysfunction. Those who reject the reasoning
foundations of modern science, are blurring the line between logical
evaluations of efficacy, and religious constraints, and personal opinions.
This is not a purely a topic of "religious freedom".
---------- ----------

Christians need to be considering that there are many other deeper topics
that they should be discussing, and NOT simply whether or not some parents
have a "right" to withhold (for example) Measles vaccines from their children.

Migrant Crossings Through Panama’s Darien Gap Have Fallen by 99 Percent Since Trump Took Office

Let us not forget all of that political propaganda about Joe needing that horrible Democrat bill in order to reduce the flow of migrants.

Whether God Exists I guess

Hope you're having a good day,

I am at present an agnostic who is seeking Christ, yet I am lacking reason to, and I was hoping this might help me in my search. Firstly, the reason I say I lack reason and do not mention faith in this message is that I have received no personal experiences that would allow me to believe in faith (if you believe I am missing something here, feel free to challenge me on this). Anyway, back to reasons to believe. I am going to try to be as charitable as possible and not point out any perceived contradictions I have with any Christian teachings, as I would not want to attack your faith. I will try to purely be trying to establish God through reason (if I find this not to be possible, as I have no personal experiences of God, this would warrant my lack of belief). To be rather boring, I am going to talk about 4 of the most popular arguments for God that I am aware of, these being the cosmological argument, the teleological argument, the moral argument and the fine-tuning argument.

1. Cosmological Argument:

Premise 1: Everything that begins to exist has a cause.
Premise 2: The universe began to exist.
Conclusion: Therefore, the universe has a cause (which is the Christian God).

This is the classic cosmological argument, but to me it fails due to the fact that neither premise can be established.

Premise 1: Everything that begins to exist has a cause.
To me this does not hold up, as no one has any evidence of anything having begun existing (in the sense of something out of nothing; even if it can be proved, it must have happened at some point due to the impossibility of infinities), and so the first premise cannot be established.
Premise 2: The universe began to exist.
This too cannot be established as the big bang. While it is the start of the expansion of the universe, the singularity that "exploded" was there before the big bang, and we have no idea of anything that happened before the big bang, so this premise cannot be justified.

Due to my inability to establish either premise, I cannot accept this argument.

2. Teleological Argument

Premise 1: Where design exists, a designer is needed.
Premise 2: The universe exhibits complex design.
Conclusion: Therefore, the universe must have had a designer.

This is the classic teleological argument, but to me it too fails due to the fact premise 2 can't be established.

Premise 1: Where design exists, a designer is needed.
Premise 2: The universe exhibits complex design.

This argument fails, as to me we can't establish that the universe exhibits complex design (design meaning "purpose or planning that exists behind an action, fact, or object"). And as such, we can't draw the conclusion. The reason I don't reject premise 1 is that, by definition, design entails a designer (at least by my definition above).

3. Moral Argument

Premise 1: If God does not exist, objective moral values do not exist.
Premise 2: Objective moral values exist.
Conclusion: Therefore, God exists.

Short answer here: objective moral values don't exist without God, so you can't just say they exist to establish him, and you can't prove objective moral values without God, making the argument cyclical without some other proof that objective moral values exist.

5. Fine-Tuning Argument

Premise 1: If the universe's physical constants and conditions are fine-tuned for life, then it is highly unlikely this occurred by chance.
Premise 2: The universe's physical constants and conditions are fine-tuned for life.
Conclusion: Therefore, it is highly unlikely the universe's life-permitting conditions occurred by chance.

For me this fails due to the fact that premise 1 cannot be justified, basically just for the reason that there is no possible way (that I have heard) you can establish that "it is highly unlikely this occurred by chance", as that implies that they could have been different, which we could not possibly know.

Anyway, thank you so much if you've tolerated all this. I hope that I can learn something from people's responses to this.

Thanks,
Luca

Out of Darkness Into Light

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” (1 Peter 2:9-10 NASB1995)

Jesus Christ, in his death on that cross, put our sins to death with him so that, by God-gifted and God-persuaded faith in him, which comes from God, and which is not of our own doing, we might die with him to sin and live to righteousness, in his power. So, when we believe in him as Lord and Savior of our lives, we are crucified with him in death to sin, and raised with him to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin, but now as slaves to God and to his righteousness, in walks of obedience to him.

For Jesus Christ did not die that horrible death on that cross just to forgive us our sins so that, when we die, we get to go to heaven. He died and was resurrected from the dead in order that he might change us, and transform us, to make us more like him, and to free us from our slavery (addiction) to sin so that we will now serve him with our lives in walks of surrender and obedience to him and to his will and purpose for our lives. We are saved from our sins so that we can now live for him to do his will for our lives.

Thus, if our faith in Jesus Christ is genuine biblical faith, we should no longer be those who are walking in deliberate and habitual sin without regard for God and for his righteousness. Sin must no longer be what we practice. Now righteousness and obedience to our Lord are to be what we practice. But if we profess faith in Jesus, and claim him as our Lord and Savior, but we make sin our practice, and obedience to God is not our practice, then we don’t know God, and we do not have salvation from sin and eternal life.

And this is the message of the gospel of our salvation. For our salvation is not a one-time profession of faith in the Lord, but it includes our daily walks of faith in obedience to him, i.e. the working out of our salvation as God works his will and purpose in our lives, as we cooperate with him in his work of grace. For his grace is training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives while we await our Lord’s return, which is when our salvation will be complete.

This is the message of the gospel that we should be proclaiming to the people, “if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth” (Ephesians 4:21-24 NASB1995). And this:

By God-persuaded faith in Jesus Christ, which is not of our own doing, we are crucified with Christ in death to sin and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but as slaves to God and to his righteousness in walks of obedience to his commands. Thus, we are no longer to allow sin to reign in our mortal bodies to make us obey its desires. For if sin is what we obey, it results in death. But if obedience is what we obey, it results in sanctification and its end is eternal life with God.

And that was a summary of Romans 6:1-23. And then we have Jesus’ words in Luke 9:23-26 where he taught that if we are to come after him that we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin) and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living our lives in sin and for self, we will lose them for eternity. But if we deny self, and by the Spirit we are putting sin to death, and we are walking in obedience to his commands, then we have salvation from sin and eternal life with God, if we continue in this faith.

So many people today are not teaching this as the gospel, but it is the gospel taught by Jesus Christ and by his New Testament apostles, which you will come to realize if you study the Scriptures for yourselves in their appropriate context. For many of the false gospels being spread today come from Scriptures taught out of context and thus made to say what they do not say if taught in context. And multitudes who profess faith in Jesus are following after the lies and not after the truth, because it is easier.

[Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 1:12-13; John 6:44; John 10:27-30; Acts 26:18; Romans 2:6-8; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; 1 Corinthians 10:1-22; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-6; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:1-19; Hebrews 4:1-13; Hebrews 12:1-2; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 1:5-10; 1 John 2:3-6; 1 John 3:4-10]

All I have is Yours, Lord.
You gave all to me,
When You died at Calv’ry
On that cruel tree.
Crucified for my sins;
You paid what I owe,
So I’d be forgiven;
My God come to know.
All I have is Yours, Lord.
You gave all to me,
When You died at Calv’ry
On that cruel tree.

Lord, I am so thankful
For Your grace divine.
I invited You, Lord,
In this heart of mine.
I have been forgiven
For all of my sins,
So I’d live with Jesus;
His grace flow within.
Lord, I am so thankful
For Your grace divine.
I invited You, Lord,
In this heart of mine.

Growing in Your grace, Lord;
Live for You each day;
How I love to worship
You throughout my day.
Sitting at Your feet, Lord,
List’ning to You speak,
Leads me to love You, Lord,
More throughout the week.
Growing in Your grace, Lord;
Live for You each day;
How I love to worship
You throughout my day.

The revised Old Covenant

The holy scriptures teach that the Law [of Moses] is the Old Covenant and that there is a New Covenant in Christ. Is the New Covenant a revision of the Old Covenant with the same Law [of Moses] being normative for Christian behaviours, including observing the ten commandments and the various specific laws that are based upon or derived from the ten commandments?

Quentin, soon to be baptized: ‘I want the wholeness of the faith’

An intellectual search for structure in various denominations blossomed into a profound spiritual homecoming to the Catholic Church.

“I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” These are the words that thousands of catechumens around the world are preparing to hear on Easter night when they are baptized. Throughout Lent, Aleteia is sharing with you the stories of some of these men and women, who are happy to become children of God. Read all of the testimonies here.

Quentin Maiwald's spiritual journey began with a search for structure and ended with finding his true spiritual home. The finance professional, who will turn 30 shortly after joining the Church this Easter, traveled a winding path to Catholicism.
“I grew up as a non-denominational Christian near Houston, Texas,” Maiwald said. “We had a family church, but we didn't go very often, and I didn't have a strong sense of what Christianity meant beyond the label.”
Maiwald's early faith was nominal at best. His professional life took him from Texas to Florida, then to graduate school, and finally to Chicago for work. Throughout these transitions, his Christian identity remained undeveloped.

“Looking back, I would say I was a Christian in name only as a child,” he said.

In his early 20s, Maiwald began taking faith more seriously. Despite his growing conviction in Jesus Christ, he struggled to put down roots in a church community due to frequent moves.

“I was moving a lot for my career and school and kept telling myself I would get involved ‘eventually,’” he recalled.

During this period, Maiwald maintained a connection to his childhood church through online sermons and podcasts. He appreciated the “structure, discipline, and commitment to doctrine” of that church, and he craved even more of it.

When he finally settled in Chicago, he felt that he finally had the stability to take faith seriously and get involved locally. Yet he found himself in a dilemma:
I knew I needed a church but quickly realized I had no idea what church to join. I realized just how ignorant I was to the history of my own religion.
His search for a spiritual home coincided with growing disillusionment with the “casual, self-help” vibe of non-denominational churches.

Why would I want anything but the full thing?

One of our Elders is in the hospital

I just got an email from our head Elder. One of our elders is in the hospital with Pneumonia in both lungs and they're investigating issues with his heart. They're suspecting some form of heart disease, please keep him in your prayers. Will keep you updated as our head Elder updates us. I will be seeing him on Easter and should hopefully receive an update by then.

Clearly every state flag needs a classical figure!

Lol! I know it's only one school district in Texas, but this is absurd.

What are You Thinking About?

When you think about tomorrow,
What does it bring to mind?
Are you hopeful? Anxious? Fearful
Of what you might now find?

Do you dread what might be coming
In days which lie ahead?
Are you hopeful that tomorrow
Will bring what’s good, instead?

Must it be one or the other?
All bad or fully good?
Is it possible tomorrow
For some misunderstood?

Well we shouldn’t now be fearful
Of what the next day brings.
But don’t ignore reality.
Give Jesus everything.

In the Scriptures we are promised
That some days will be bad.
Even though we follow Jesus,
Some days they will be sad.

We are told keep our eyes focused
On Jesus, Savior, King.
But be watching now, with wisdom,
For liars, up they spring.

So keep eyes and ears now open.
Don’t let the truth escape.
And be testing what you’re hearing,
So you not fall for fake.

Do not fear what is yet coming,
But be now so aware,
So that you’re prepared to follow
Your Lord now anywhere.

Why didn’t Hungary arrest Netanyahu? ICC wants answers

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is seeking answers from Hungary after the country did not comply with an international arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his official visit to Budapest earlier this month.

As reported by Telex, according to The Times of Israel, the ICC submitted a formal request for clarification, citing Article 87 of the Rome Statute — a provision that allows the court to challenge countries that obstruct its operations by refusing to cooperate.

Very uneasy about confessing this sin

I know that priests might have "heard it all," but this one, I'm not sure. I honestly don't know how to confess this one without being way too provocative. :sigh: :sigh: I'll never be able to make eye contact with him again. I already missed the already-established-times confessions, so if I find a priest to confess to before EV, they're going to know the face of the person confessing. There's a slim chance that this sin is venial (in the way that I committed it) but it is usually an intrinsic evil.

Why does Col 1:16-20 take a back seat to ECT ?

Col 1:16-20 Because in him were created all things in heaven and on earth, the visible as well as the invisible ( whether Thrones or Lordships or Archons or Powers ) ; all things were created through him and for him; And he is before all things, and all things hold together in him, And he is the head of the body, of the assembly- who is the origin , firstborn from the dead, so that he might himself hold first place in all things- For in him all the Fullness was pleased to take up a dwelling, And through him to reconcile all things to him, making peace by the blood of his cross[ through him], whether the things on the earth or the things in the heavens.
Why do you who hold to ECT believe that your view of scripture trumps this view that God/Jesus will reconcile all that was made to himself ? If even one person is not reconciled then this verse is false. Why do the scriptures that you believe teach ECT trump this and other verses that say God/Jesus will reconcile all things to himself?

King Charles faces criticism over nods to 'Islam, other religious traditions' in Easter message

King Charles has shared an Easter message on Maundy Thursday in which he said that the world still needs "faith, hope and love."

"One of the puzzles of our humanity is how we are capable of both great cruelty and great kindness," he said.

"This paradox of human life runs through the Easter story and in the scenes that daily come before our eyes — at one moment, terrible images of human suffering and, in another, heroic acts in war-torn countries where humanitarians of every kind risk their own lives to protect the lives of others.

If Jesus Were on Earth...

I thought this might be a fun exercise for everyone, to learn from, and question ourselves.
It's quite simple.

All you have to do, is think of something Jesus would be doing, or not doing; believing, or not believing...
State the particular thing. For example... If Jesus were on earth, he would ___________. Then, reference or quote the scriptures, that support the statement.

This gives posters an opportunity to respond, either in agreement, or disagreement, expand on, or just think about.
I have a few things in mind, but will likely post tomorrow.
Let's see what we can learn from Jesus.

Latest Gallup Poll--Trump has the worst first quarter approval ratings since any WWII president, not once but twice!

He does like to do things big, even failing spectacularly (as he is doing this minute, taking our country along with him.)

Women, who seem to be the most astute of all the demographic groups, approve by only 34% and disapprove by 62%. Proud of my gender.

His approval rating overall is 45% and was 41% in 2017.

All nine presidents since WWII had much higher ratings.

Even the one who came in second worst, Bill Clinton, had a 55% approval rating.

My website in closed nations

Hey a testimony- I have been getting hits on my website (www.heavenandfreedom.com) from nations closed to the gospel such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, there are people in these countries looking at my website! The internet is a stellar tool for sharing the gospel! God just shared this with me, that the internet may be the only way to reach these people, the only way! It may also be the best way! The only alternative would be to go in-person as a missionary but that would be EXTREMELY dangerous. The secret police in these countries are actively hunting for christian missionaries and they are very smart, they know what they are doing! If you are caught doing missionary work in these countries they will haul you out into the town square and chop your head off with a sword! Also conversion from islam to christianity carries the death penalty!

I want one more chance at life. Please. I'm 27.

I've been in pain for months and lost my previous life where I could walk properly. I just want one more chance at life. I'm meeting with a surgeon next week and I need God to give him the wisdom to cure me. I've been in so much pain since December of last year with no end in sight. It's my right foot.. one toe giving me problems.

I went from being happy and very active, to 10 pounds lighter, hopeless, and nearly couch-bound.. at just age 27 facing the fact that my life has probably ended. My mom already buried her own child. I don't want her to lose me too.

I want to play kickball with my friends again. I've been away from this religion for 15 years and this is what brought me back: this injury. I made a mistake by turning my back on God and I'm sorry. I'm suffering, and I don't want to break my mom's heart with my suffering. God is the physician, I need Him. I want Him to also work with my surgeon. Teamwork. This is the realest thing I have ever written. I mean all of this with my own heart.

The State Department is 'streamlining' what it will cover in its report on international human rights

The Trump administration is substantially scaling back the State Department's annual reports on international human rights to remove longstanding critiques of abuses such as harsh prison conditions, government corruption and restrictions on participation in the political process, NPR has learned.

Despite decades of precedent, the reports, which are meant to inform congressional decisions on foreign aid allocations and security assistance, will no longer call governments out for such things as denying freedom of movement and peaceful assembly. They won't condemn retaining political prisoners without due process or restrictions on "free and fair elections."

Forcibly returning a refugee or asylum-seeker to a home country where they may face torture or persecution will no longer be highlighted, nor will serious harassment of human rights organizations.

Well, we wouldn't want them to be hypocrites, would we? And we wouldn't want to make our friends look bad, either.

The Trump administration recently negotiated the transfer of immigrants from the U.S. into El Salvador's notorious prison system. In a draft of the forthcoming report on that country reviewed by NPR, the section on prison conditions is erased.

And we'll get rid of WOKE garbage like criticizing countries for:
  • Extensive gender-based violence.
  • Violence or threats of violence targeting people with disabilities.

No one is going to convince me that this isn't deliberate.

Hi, I can't help it; I know I'm not a genius but I don't think I'm stupid (all the time). I know that this is just way, way too much of a coincidence for this to not be deliberate. I will explain.

Thursday night (last night) we get a call from a relative (who has come over a few times in the past) saying that she, her children, and her brother/brother's children are coming over tomorrow (which is today, Good Friday). My dad "lied" to them and told that we're having company (he's simply drained from so many visits from people like physical/occupational therapy, visiting physicians, etc.), and requested that they schedule it for a different day. So, we see them calling today on our phone but my dad doesn't answer it, and neither do I. I can surmise that they are calling to try to come tomorrow or Sunday. They seem too insistent on coming this weekend and not waiting for at least another week (I'm uncomfortable with the latter too, because that is Divine Mercy Sunday).

Since the date of Good Friday and Easter changes every year, I'm having a very, very hard time believing that the relatives don't know that this is Easter Weekend. I wonder if any relatives already suspect I'm Christian (even if I don't know how this happened). My blood is boiling but we may be able to get out it for this weekend, but not necessarily Divine Mercy Sunday (and no, it's not obligatory but it does not matter to me that it isn't. It's still an infringement upon my rights). My dad is not so sure that it's deliberate but sorry, I can't believe it's not. There's no way they don't know that today is GF or that the weekend is Easter. I don't believe it at all. Sure, I couldn't go to GF Mass, but THEY don't know that I couldn't go and may be assuming that they could get in the way of me going to GF Mass. Now they're on the hunt for tomorrow and even though EV (Easter Vigil) is later in the evening, I was planning to leave the house earlier in order for a priest to hear my confession (and a couple other errands before Mass) and I haven't made a time yet for that. I'm not optimistic I can but I'm intent on it at least.

US strikes on Yemen oil terminal kill at least 74. Houthis say it was a civilian facility and that the strikes constituted a "war crime".

US air strikes on a key oil terminal on Yemen's Red Sea coast controlled by the Houthi movement have killed at least 74 people and wounded 171 others, the Houthi-run health ministry says.

The US military said it had destroyed Ras Isa "to eliminate this source of fuel for the Iran-backed Houthi terrorists and deprive them of illegal revenue".

The Houthi-led government in north-west Yemen said the terminal was a civilian facility and that the strikes constituted a "war crime".

Strong prayers please

Please strong prayers for my son Jakeb's mental and physical health. Please pray for healing and his happiness and that nothing is seriously wrong with him. Please pray that we find him the right doctor quickly. The one he has now is horrible. Please ask God to keep him safe and bad thoughts out of his head. Please ask that I can hear his laughter. I'm so scared. All this if it is God's will and in the name of Jesus.Thank you and God bless.
