I once said the smell of the Filipino food in this mall in the Philippines made me nauseous and that it bugged me how everything had gravy on it there...didn’t go over well. ^_^

I have learned better to be quiet too. :)

I like to talk about things and work them out. That hasn't been a strong trait of any of them. So we rarely fight - it's more like they think long periods of silence will cool everything off.

Which actually works better for me now that Orthodoxy has worked on me a bit. (I used to just get madder if I was ignored for a long time.) But in truth, I try harder to neither take nor give offense and just prevent any problems altogether.

I still get in trouble from time to time by not knowing what will BE offensive. That has been a steep learning curve.

Who knew it would be s mortal offense not to like the smell of someone's foreign food? Lol

I'm a yankee now living in the south. Married to a southern belle. Does that count?
You're not only married to someone from a different culture - you're an immigrant. ;)

Yeah, don't insult the food!

Who knew? I don't take it as a personal insult if you don't like something I eat. Or even if you don't like something I cook.

lol quick funny story (sorry we are really derailing your thread!) ... I tried a recipe I got from online. (I learned after this to be really careful where I source recipes lol.) I wasn't too sure while it was cooking. I tried to salvage it. But anyway, my husband took a plate full and went off and ate it. I was busy and for some reason didn't eat until about a half hour later. I fixed mine, took one bite, and commented how awful it was and fed the rest to the chickens. He was shocked - first that I insulted my own cooking, then that he had suffered through eating it and I didn't. It was truly inedible. I'll eat somewhat bad food, but this was terrible. And from then on I only used online recipes from reputable sites and after reading lots of comments.

But yeah, insulting food is big apparently ... ?

I did the same thing. I grew up in Chicagoland, spent 17 years in the South, got married, and just moved back up North. My wife was a little apprehensive about making the move, but now loves the cooler weather much more than she realized she would.

Ha, since this thread is about travel I will say ... that if it was feasible I'd probably do what our "snowbirds" do. They live up north and avoid the brutal heat of the South, but come down here in winter to avoid the cold up there.

You can get a "job" as a campground monitor. It doesn't pay but it's free space rent with water and electricity for light duties in the off season. I've thought about it. ;)

But heat isn't as bad here as some places in the south. Sometimes the humidity presses down on you like you're under a bowl and can't breathe, and sometimes it's 110+ with high humidity for 90+ days. On the coast here it's not so bad. Just a thunderstorm almost daily as far in as we live. :)

My wife would like to go to the Yucatán area of Mexico to see the Aztec and Mayan pyramids like Teotihucan and Uxmal, Chechen Itza, etc. I have to say, those places fascinate me, but the heart sacrifice bloody butchery barbarism of the Maya and Aztecs turns me off....

It was easy to visit Greece not only because they’re Orthodox, but their pre-Christian culture was far more civilized and dedicated to truth, beauty, arts, democracy. Not sure if I can find beauty in Aztecs and Maya with all the blood and guts aspects.

My wife and I visited Chichen Itza and we loved it. Machu picchu is also on our list of travel destinations. My wife is a double blessing. Not only does she work for an airline to set up all of the travel details but shes Venezuelan and Spanish is her native language. Its like having the perfect personal travel agent.

I’m kind of a weird traveler I guess. I have to feel some sort of connection to the edifice or thing I’m visiting. I’d love to see those pyramids on one hand, but to think about how much blood and murder took place, even of kids, it sickens me and takes something away from the experience?

That is true, there is still a lot of spiritual darkness connected to a lot of these ancient architectural sites.

Really? How so?
Paganism, pyramids constructed for deities to perform human sacrifices and not to mention the propagation of Dia de los muertos throughout the Mexican culture.

Fr Seraphim Rose exorcised a mountain near Platina where a lot of Native American did their shamanism, and I think folks in the counter culture did a lot of weird stuff there as well.

I have to say, part of me wants to just forget Israel altogether and just go Egypt or Jordan. I have a real problem with the State of Israel in general. I can't stand how these clueless evangelicals POUR money into Israel and think that the literal government of Israel will usher in the second coming or some kind of apocalypse event. These Jews in Israel by and large roll their eyes at Christians. I have heard so many things about how they are super unfriendly and don't like Christians, that they pinch their noses at us coming there purely for shekels. I've heard a lot of bad things and watched some videos and not liked their attitudes at all. There is something about the pilgrimage to Israel also that is ruined with all the evangelicals there. It almost turns it into a theme park of sorts. I hate the way the Palestinians are treated and continue to get marginalized more and more. You don't see the anti-Christian Jewish stuff on TV. You have to talk to people who've been there or see it online. I'm just not crazy about the culture there.

When we went to Greece, I LOVED the Greek culture that is there now, love the mythological past, adore the Orthodoxy that has grown and thrived there for millenia. Greece had it all.

As a history teacher and fan in general, Israel has been a place I've wanted to go to for decades. I have wanted to see the Holy Sepulcher, Bethany, Cana, Nativity, you name it! But I'm so turned off by the Jewish culture there and the politics and question the safety, not sure if I'm going to go.

We're actually looking hard at Egypt or Jordan. I wouldn't want to explore Christian Egypt much, because it is primarily in the Sinai, but in Jordan there is actually some great stuff like Mt. Nebo, Bethany, and other spots! Egypt fascinates me. I can't imagine seeing Luxor, Aswan, Cairo, Pyramids, Karnak, Hatshepsut's temple, all that stuff!
