Anyway, I've recently joined here and I find majority of arguments going on here specifically in this thread are very ridiculous, lol. People are not focusing on the main idea of this thread which is Pompeii from an islamic point of view, rather than that they're focusing on something that is quite irrelevant.. volcanos, cloud of ashes, roofs falling apart, blogs, opinions, judgments, pride, cupid... etc. It's not actually an opinion if you're attacking or mocking other's beliefs, that's an offense. We are here, in this thread to actually understand why Muslims believe what happened in Pompeii was as a result of Allah's wrath. Mase and I have clearly stated the islamic point of view explained to the best of our knowledge and beliefs. I think in exchange of that, other's who are from a different religion can explain their religion point of view NOT theirs as we are here to understand others' religions. and those who are from the same religion as Mase and I can add to what we've already covered or correct us if we're wrong.. simple as that.

Are you saying that we should only care what Islam has to say on this thread and not what actually happened according to history?

I'm sorry, I don't have any ready pictures for you.

It was a city of 20,000 and we've found around 2,000 bodies. Writers from the time, such as Pliny the Younger, stated that people escaped the city. So, yeah, most people escaped the city.

I disagree, so he is 1 writer and wrote what he thought happened, he didn't accompany them to make sure that they escaped=surviving.

Whatever helps you cope with the disconnect between your theological point and what history records.

Yea whatever. History is written by humans, and they never know things for sure 100/100, they can keep on collecting what they find and try to make sense out of it. As a Muslim I believe in history written by Quran, I thought I'm super clear about myself since day 1 in this forum.

Just because only 2000 or so bodies were found doesn’t mean the rest escaped.

and just because we have rocks from the moon doesn't mean it isn't really made of cheese under the surface. The way the people died, there should be more than just 2000 bodies preserved in the ash. So, yes, it does kind of mean that they escaped.

The death of Pliny the Elder, as recorded by Pliny the Younger.

They thought proper to go farther down upon the shore to see if they might safely put out to sea, but found the waves still running extremely high, and boisterous. There my uncle, laying himself down upon a sail cloth, which was spread for him, called twice for some cold water, which he drank, when immediately the flames, preceded by a strong whiff of sulphur, dispersed the rest of the party, and obliged him to rise. He raised himself up with the assistance of two of his servants, and instantly fell down dead; suffocated, as I conjecture, by some gross and noxious vapour, having always had a weak throat, which was often inflamed. As soon as it was light again, which was not till the third day after this melancholy accident, his body was found entire, and without any marks of violence upon it, in the dress in which he fell, and looking more like a man asleep than dead.

Is the body of Pliny the Elder still in Pompeii? Could this have happened to other people in Pompeii? Is it remotely possible that not all of the dead were preserved by ash?

I read both letters by Pliny the Younger none of them support your claim, Loammi. Plus, don't put words in my mouth. I denied slaves being the only ones that died in that incident, while the rich surviving, as u put it in ur first reply. Just because Pliny the younger survived doesn't mean the rest did. Moreover, Pliny doesn't talk about slaves being chained during so - I wonder why (does that mean there were no slaves? If him surviving means the rest survived, then him not mentioning slaves, means there was none?). Pliny doesn't even talk about social status, he only mentions his uncle and Rectina, while the rest as 'people' who are panicking. He said they were leaving the places that danger is taking part of, not leaving Pompeii and the endangered areas as a whole. He actually described it as a very impossible to escape situation.

Here are the letters

The Destruction of Pompeii, 79 AD

Yes, that's what is going on in this thread.
Why would you presume that? Don't hate just because we are Muslims. Some people seems to be very allergic to opinions when it contains the word muslim or islam..

No, that's not what I meant actually... I was saying that we've explained the Islamic point of view and now we want you to explain your religion's point of view not YOUR personal one.
