Worst roommate/flatmate experiences

What are some of your worst experiences with roommates/flatmates?

Mine have involved:

a drug addict flatmate and his friends, one of whom turned up in some kind of state one day and threatened my life. made the house reek of weed, stole my food and accused me of being judgemental and unloving for complaining.

a couple that didn't disclose that I was one over the maximum number of tenants allowed until after I'd moved in for a while, then demanded i clear out my room because inspections were due. in addition, having to put up with them having loud sex, stealing my food (again!) and accusing me of not paying the rent when i had.

a guy with OCD even worse than mine, the most uptight neatnik the world has ever known. if i left one utensil out he'd flip. never smiled, always cranky, you tell a joke to lighten the mood and he'd take it as an offense, etc.

The worst part is that these were all professing Christians.

I had a guy who would not speak to me. I lived with him nearly s year and he probably spoke 5 sentences to me. Instead he would use dramatic sighs and dirty looks to get his point across. He labeled his food with insulting reminders for me not to eat them even though I never touched it. Yet paradoxically he would often move my stuff. He insisted on keeping the heater on at all times and closing all the windows, even on warm days. Moving out was one of the happiest days of my life.

I once had a roommate who yelled at us for his own messes, skimmed off our rent money, said we didn't pay when we did etc. At one point, he got us all together to "have a little talk" in which he blamed me for all kinds of things that simply weren't true. When I disputed his accusations, he said that was a sign of my guilt, and managed to turn the other guys against me. As with your horror story, he was also a fellow Christian. We went to the same church and everything. Shortly after I left, the others discovered the truth when he started blaming them for the very same things he tried to pin on me. Needless to say, I got a few apologies at that point, but it was too little too late. This happened 10 years ago, and I've been roommate-free ever since.

Ah, life with a flatmate, was... so much fun that I've vowed never to live with strangers ever again.

Late with their rent, generally unsocial, very argumentative, and a real lack of table manners (plus she used to shut herself in the bathroom for an hour or so each evening to do her make-up... before bed)

LOL.

I was living in a Christian ministry apartment building. I had a roommate that...umm...fapped too much. ANd by too much, I mean every time I walked into our room. We shared a room, with loft beds. And I would wake up in the middle of the night to the loft shaking. Not even lying.

On top of that, I would come in and he was watching porn on his computer. So I totally was all grossed out by that. AND by the fact that he smelled like he never washed his feet. He left one weekend, and my other roommates and I hosed the apartment down. It was minty fresh in that place. He came home, and within 30 seconds of him walking in, we were gagging and opening up the windows. Needless to say, I was his roommate for only a few weeks before I moved into the living room to sleep on the couch. I tried to get him removed from the premises (because he violate the covenant of the ministry by looking at porn). BUT, his dad was the president of the committee that oversaw the ministry. So even if the minister wanted to kick him out, he couldn't because of the dad.

Sad, right?

OH!!! And this guy didn't know how to flush the toilet after taking a deuce! I had to put a sign on the door to the bathroom "Please flush after using the toilet".

How sad is that? He was 19 years old.

What?!? ...Okay, I get it, it was for to 'save time' in the morning, but still...that's weird and gross.

I hated it when he would not honor his dish nights. And the time when he took in a buddy of his who was a convict on the tether system for a month was not a fun one. That's not the reason I moved out, though. The reason I moved out was he blamed me for his inability to pay his own bills, and the land line got pulled as a result. This was before I had a cell (which I couldn't afford), and while I was looking for a better job.

My story is tame compared to some others here.

Late teens - I was living in a halfway house. That's what it was technically - but they allowed others who weren't there because of the law (like myself) to rent a room. It was super cheap, and all I could afford at the time.

One of my roommates was on a mental disability allowance - although I could never figure out why, he seemed capable enough - and didn't work. He would stay up late and watch his favorite T.V. shows with the T.V. on loud.

At the time - I was working a job that required me to get up around 4am to shower, eat and make my way to the bus stop to get to work. Work didn't start for a few hours - but it was out of the way and I had to hop 2 different bus routes to get there.

Because of his loud t.v - I wound up getting less than 4 hours of sleep every night. Upon asking him to please turn it down or get headphones - he would fly into a tirade about his rights to do what he wanted when he wanted.

After a week, the lack of sleep was starting to effect me - a headache that wouldn't go away and got to the point where it felt like a sledgehammer banging my head from the inside. I even started to hallucinate. It didn't help that by this time I hated my roommate and literally wanted to do him bodily harm.

Staff kicked him out the next week for something - I can't remember.

Doing makeup at night? Wow... I can understand facials and beauty treatments, but the full blown makeup, weird!

My roommates in college used to have a cat that peed on my door. On Thursdays they used to smoke weed at midnight (like clockwork). They would eat my meat that I put in the freezer, but when I put something in the fridge that I was going to eat later (like a half sandwich) I would come back less than 2 hours later and it would be gone! When they threw parties I had to lock my door because random guys would try to come in my room.

Then I let this girl come to stay with me at my house and she would eat my food, even though she got food stamps, pay only half the rent and would hit on my boyfriend. One time she came out in a towel and made a salacious comment (can't remember what) and then bent over in front of him. Later she took up basketball so she could join him at the court. She refused to move out when I told her to. When she finally moved out, I found blood all over my sheets. I won't go into that one, but you know what I mean...

I had a roommate that never showered or cleaned unless the RA/RD came in and told her to, and she rarely got out of bed or ate anything other than chips and popcorn and mountain dew. She just played on her computer all day and all night. Once she turned it off at like 2:30, then got mad at me for turning on the lamp so I could get to the bathroom to throw up.

The only 'issues' I have had with room mates were petty; loud sex, occasional floor vibrating music, but otherwise they've been lovely.

The worst experience so far has been finding D after her suicide attempt, a close second involved trying to get contact lenses out of a vomiting, uncooperative drunks eyes then sharing a bed with them and their vomit bucket. Neither were regular occurrences though, one offs due to a series of unfortunate choices. Not bad enough to put me off sharing permanently.

Never again will I agree to share a bed, no matter how cheap the rent becomes. Share a room, awesome. Share a bed ... no thank you.
