I also have a problem with Sola Scriptura being a relatively recent invention. Plus, SS is not in scripture, so I would think that makes it self-refuting.
How is that?plus, no one actually believes it in practice.
They all interpret Scripture according to the particular framework they have accepted, be it Calvinism or some other "ism". Everyone has a tradition within which they interpret Scripture. How is that?
How is that?
That's a good point. I was shocked when I read a piece written by Martin Luther concerning Sola Scriptura. I wasn't Orthodox yet, but I couldn't see a difference in his description and Orthodoxy. I started a thread on here (that I've looked for repeatedly since then). But when it comes up for most modern Protestants (particularly those who are products of the Radical Reformation or later) ... what they take it to mean is nothing like what Luther intended. To be fair, the original meaning of Sola Scriptura did not mean abandoning all tradition or theology of the early church. The modern application by many churches, especially those who consider tradition to be wholly unnecessary, doesn’t follow the original intent. The original intent was fairly similar to Prima Scriptura, though not identical.
Certainly I disagree with Sola Scriptura...but I am someone who likes to portray things as accurately as possible
I really like Fr. Andrew’s podcast series...very helpful and balanced! That's a good point. I was shocked when I read a piece written by Martin Luther concerning Sola Scriptura. "Faith alone" is another striking "evolution" of the radical reformers and later. Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick did a good job of explaining this in his Orthodoxy and Heterodoxy podcast.
