The same thing could be found in rock music. I mean, even before hip-hop was around this things were going on in the rock-n-roll culture.reformedfan said:What did I say that was racist? I protest the misogyny, the objectification of women, the drugs, immorality, violence, etc.
But hip-hop took it a step further.antiarte said:The same thing could be found in rock music. I mean, even before hip-hop was around this things were going on in the rock-n-roll culture.
antiarte said:Do you even know the difference between hip-hop and rap?
It was definitely more blunt and graphic, that's obvious. But rock has took it some steps further itself. Acts like Danzig, NIN, Deicide, and more poppy acts like Slipknot and Marylin Manson- they've upped the violence and the immorality as well.Miss_Macphisto said:But hip-hop took it a step further.
antiarte said:Simple. Hip-hop is the whole culture; rap is just that, rapping, rhyming, spittin'- a part of the culture like DJi'ng, Graffitti, and Breakdancing.
theFijian said:So could you say that all rap is hip-hop but not all hip-hop is rap? Would you say rap comes under the hip-hop umbrella as it were?
I think poverty plays a much bigger role in crime. Rap isn't that powerful to influence at this level. What are they trying to teach young people-That crime is cool and profitable? No wonder the crime rate is so high in dense metro areas
antiarte said:All rap is not hip-hop. ICP raps, they're definitely not hip-hop. Fred Durst tried to rap, definitely not hip-hop. And yeah, rap sorta comes under the hip-hop umbrella. It's part of the culture, of the whole that's hip-hop. Graffitti artists are hip-hop; b-boys are hip-hop; and of course, DJing is hip-hop. Hope that's clear.

I think it's arogant to say any music genre sucks, or is better than any other, it's the expression of the artist. I mainly listen to rock and metal, but I've heard some rap I've enjoyed (from the less known artists, the mtv ones I usually think do suck, but that's just my opinion) I can see how people can dig a vibe, beat or whatever, I myself apreciate musical depth more, I like multi layerd music, this usually does take more technical skill then say rap, but technique doesn't make music good or bad.
It gives a very arogant and negative view of the rock/metal scene if we just put down other styles, just cause we dont like it doesn't mean it sucks or it's worthless, just like in rock i've seen lyrics in rap that I think suck, and also some that I find inspiring, you can't generalise.
It's probebly cause I haven't listened to it that much, but the music often sounds so similar, with the same beat for almost all artists, with some extra bells and whistles added to itI can't help but think the drummer must be bored to tears
Mister_mag00 said:Mainly because it has foul language like F___ this and F___ that>> portrays -Robbery-Murder-Rape-Drugs and other vile crimes as something of a cool and envy-able life style. Cool all right in the "Slammer" .It has very little original talent-most sounds the same to me.Except for M&M -more talent than most-but still raunchy stuff. What are they trying to teach young people-That crime is cool and profitable? No wonder the crime rate is so high in dense metro areas. This garbage form of music makes most R & R sound like sunday school.I don`t like it and wish it would pass by quicker than disco did.
