Why are so many Christians against annihilation in hell when scripture supports it?

I think you need to see a Pastor or maybe a mental health counselor.
Mt.25:46
And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
Jn.3:17
For God sent not the Son into the world to judge the world; but that the world should be saved through him.

These scriptures cannot be reconciled by any doctrine except the one we are commanded to teach which is Jesus Christ IS the saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.

Don't believe me, go ahead and try.

or do you prefer to live with contradiction?

I’m Lutheran I know what I believe and I see no contradiction in it.

Then it is not me who needs to see a mental health counselor.

I knew before I posted those scriptures you could not reconcile them, thanks for proving me correct.

They are easily reconcilable by common sense.

They are easily reconcilable by common sense.

Jesus came to save the whole world but the whole world will not be saved.

That does not reconcile them, that is saying the one scripture does not mean what it say because of the other scripture.

Try and reconcile them, good luck.

P.S. why would you choose the less nobler of the two to stand on?

In other words is your view of God so small that He would start something and not be able to finish it.

So says the one who believe God cannot finish what He started

Counting the cost

For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? 29Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, 30Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

Did God sit down and count the cost for the salvation of the world?

After He laid the foundation, Jesus Christ, for that salvation is He unable to finish what He started?

According to those who believe in eternal torment and annihilation He is unable.

Eternal torment and annihilation are mocking God, saying He began to build, and was not able to finish.

Your beliefs are heterodox and not consistent with the orthodox faith.

maybe not, but they are consistent with scripture and the faithfulness of God to be able to do ALL that He started.

I believe in a never failing God, your doctrine cannot say the same thing, unless you are dishonest with yourself.

You need to see a Pastor for counseling your doctrine is heretical.

So you ascribe to the insane belief that everyone will be saved?

I ascribe to a NEVER failing God who will accomplish ALL He started via the CROSS, which is the salvation of all.

Insane you say, the preaching of the cross is foolishness to those who do not believe.
Once again the scriptures are proven true.

See you contradicted yourself. You admitted that there are unsaved “those who do not believe”.

and you need to stop running to your pastor for counseling and turn to Jesus and ask Him if he will fail in his mission, because your pastor is leading you astray.

No my Pastor holds a masters degree from Concordia Theological Seminary and his theology is good.
