Your sig reminded me that there are "odds" for most things posted re war, blue helmets, politics, weird things done without the motive known, and maybe you do not like the odds ?
It is a movie quote from the character in my pic. That is all.

As for the odds in the war, who knows? It does seem long that Russia will take all of Ukraine, but it also seems that Ukraine will take back all of its lost territory.

it is worth noting, other than those few, the rest (at least that were found) were convicted of war crimes; it was not a blanket pardon for all that committed war crimes.
okay, this just gets more weirder and weirder.... I went to look up percentage of war crimes pardoned from wwII, thinking a lot more were.....
but did not expect at all this first hit in the search: (didn't remember or even think of the allied war crimes, or how many were never even tried let alone convicted or pardoned)

Allied war crimes during World War II

During World War II, the Allies committed legally proven war crimes and violations of the laws of war against either civilians or military personnel of the Axis powers. Wikipedia

And where would this buffer zone be? Your issue is that at least one side will object, or even both, depending on where the buffer zone/borders were placed.

Ukraine will insist on the pre-2014 borders, and would likely want the peacekeepers on both sides of the border to protect from a Russian attack. They aren't going to agree for Russia -- who has had troops in Ukraine since at least 2014 -- to be rewarded for their bringing war to Ukraine.

Russia will insist that the borders be placed based on the borders they currently claim, giving them substantial Ukrainian territory -- including territory they don't currently control. Though, they'd likely "settle" for where the borders being the areas of Ukraine they currently control. Though, to be fair, they'll still recognize they "own" those other areas of Ukraine and will likely attack as soon as your blue hats leave (the UN isn't going to leave peacekeepers in Ukraine for too many years).

And if you try to make the 2020 borders, where Russia only keeps Crimea, then neither side will agree. And, again, even if you could, Russia will likely just attack again, in a few years, after the blue helmets are gone.

Yes, it is odd how the victors never prosecute their own war crimes. Though that is one area that the US appears to be improving in, at least a little, as they have at least tried individuals who committed "war crimes" -- the most infamous being Lt. Calley but there are other examples more recently from Iraq and Afghanistan. While these technically are not charged as "war crimes," that is what they were charged for, just under current US/US military laws.

Everyone in Russia and Ukraine should get a full pardon.

Why?

Russia launched a war of aggression in violation of international laws and of treaties/agreements it was a party to. Russia violated the UN Charter, the ICJ found its war to be illegal.

Furthermore, independent international bodies - both state backed and NGOs - have found Russian prosecution of the war deliberately targeted civilians (including bombing/striking schools, hospitals, apartment buildings, churches and temporary refugee camps). That's not to mention all of the individual killings, torture, forced deportation of children, forced conscription, sexual violence and other warcrimes.

If war crimes are committed on ANY SIDE, they should be investigated and the perpetrators prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Otherwise, a rules based international order is impossible to maintain.

Russia doesn't get a free pass because prosecuting it would be hard.

Blue Helmets should come from countries they both can agree on.

Russia has to stop conducting its illegal war before UN Peacekeepers could be called in. After that, I'm all in favour of a demilitarised zone patrolled by a peacekeeping force.

I propose one starting from Ukraine's 2014 borders and stretching at least 50 km into Russia.

Who should I vote for to end the war in Ukraine?
Whoever you think will actually give Ukraine what it needs to win it, instead of this trickle that's been going on for 18 months.

If the USA stops giving aid to Ukraine, that does not end the war.
If the rest of NATO stops giving aid to Ukraine, that does not end the war.

That will; however, put time on Russia's side, and reverse the tide with it's superior population, and if it wins or is able to secure the status quo, then the population that still is living in the 5 provinces will lose their freedom, or be forced into being refugees, or deported to eastern Russia where they will be second-class citizens. (Like many in those regions already are)

Then this will turn into a decade long guerrilla war like Russia's invasion of Afghanistan was, with partisan sabotages and uprisings occurring on a regular basis that Russia will eventually use it as an excuse to flatten more villages and cities. But it will be all right, because the news won't bother reporting on it anymore, because it will be accepted as the norm so we will all be able to go on pretending it's someone else's problem. Kind of like when we all ignored what was going on about 6 months after Russia first invaded in 2014.
