  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Which bible?

I see, but aren't you then making the case to ignore the bible completely?
Quite the reverse. It's all relevant. But relevant in the way that act one of a play is relevant to act 5.

It's the story that we are called to continue.

So, then we ignore everything in the OT then.

Cool. I can agree with that.

No Eden. No fall. No original sin.

Aren't the apostles Isrealis?

So, that wipes out the NT too.

What I said is "anything that is specified to Israelis is out (i.e. how do I blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven?)", that kind of commandments don't apply to us (see the example above). But all others (i.e. not steal, not kill, not covet, respect your parents) still applies.

So in that sense, don't kill apply to all of us, blot out the name of Amalek, they fights the israelis and God give the Israelis the commandment to blot them, so that commandment is specified to Israelis, not to gentles.

But you said:

My point was, of course, that the command makes perfect sense in the context in which it was given, but not for someone living in a Manhattan apartment.

So, how do you know what is relevant and what is irrelevant?

It's all relevant.

The thing you're not engaging with is what it means for a story to be relevant; a story's relevance isn't lived out by trying to reenact it.

As a command to be followed it doesn't fit life in a modern city.
But it's all part of a story that is ongoing.

This self-contradictory: if one bit can be ignored then ALL of it cannot be part of an ongoing anything.

You are ignoring one part of the bible.

As I have said: on what basis do you do that?

And if we ignore one part, can we not ignore it all?

Only my interpretation. So I could very well be wrong in saying that some laws only apply to Israelites (but there are laws that I just can't keep when the temple is destroyed).

Everyone fail by the law, the law of now covet alone will fail everyone of us. As a Christian I try to live the the law of God, and am greatly thankful that Jesus saves even me by grace.

Hun, I think you are being needlessly argumentative, here.
The "pooping bit" is still relevant, in the sense that we are still not to poop where we eat...we are still to dispose of our poop and not have it near our homes. We've advanced a bit since those ancient times, but poop is still a dangerous substance, as it has some rather nasty little bugs living in it (something those early people could not have known). Someone living in a Manhattan apartment could hardly be expected to carry a spade to some private place outside the camp, or in this case, the city...dig a hole, do his business and then turn back and bury it. However, he is expected to use the toilet in his apartment, flush it when he's through, wipe his little bottom, and wash his hands thoroughly.
So, while the method described in Leviticus might be outdated, the need for cleanliness remains, and the command to properly dispose of one's poop is still valid.

I hope I really didn't need to explain that to you...

Are you in Mexico? (i.e., -mx)

By way of example, US laws apply to the US, Mexican laws apply to Mexico, Canadian laws apply to Canada, and Christians under grace need to figure from Hebrews 7.12 and Hebrews 7.19 whether they are really still under the Old Testament law.

I am just curious about the criteria on which people choose to interept the bible.

I have asked this type of question a few times, so far.

No not in Mexico.

Thanks for the information.

But I a still not sure (as I said above) about how people choose which bits of the bible are relevant and which bits to ignore.

If you read through the Epistle to the Hebrews in one sitting, there might be more clarity.

It's an amazing book of the Bible.

I'm not ignoring anything. You are refusing to consider it as what it is - story.

Given that Revelations 22 says:

I am wondering what bible I should be reading.

Which one is the intact and unchanged version?

Any of the more popular scholarly approved Bible versions are acceptable to read for the Christian and non Christian. They vary somewhat in style and occasionally verbage, but they do not differ on the essential doctrines of the historic Christian Faith. Ive been told that 66% of the worlds Christian population reads the NIV (New International Version) which is written in plain easy to understand language . I personally have an NIV Life Application Study Bible with scholarly commentary at the bottom of each page for greater clarity of what im reading. This BIble has changed my life dramatically because it is the actual inspired Word of God reaching my heart and Soul. Other good versions in modern vernacular include : The New King James / The Living Bible / New American Standard / etc.... Stay away from BIbles that come from the Word of Faith (Faith) Teachers as they will have a slant toward some abberant teachings such as speaking reality into existence and other apostate doctrines . ANd of course stay away from the popular Christian Cults Bibles such as Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses as they are filled with changes to the original Greek text to reflect many of their apostate unchristian teachings like Jesus didn't physically resurrect and that Men will eventually become a God and occupy a planet where they will have endless sex and other shameful teachings that demote God or the very person of Jesus.

Hope that helped. Dave

Thanks. Reading the bible changed my life too.

It is the reason that I began to doubt that god exists.

Now I have read it a second time, I am less convinced.

Still you may convince me.
