  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Given that Revelations 22 says:

King James Version (KJV) said:
18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

I am wondering what bible I should be reading.

Which one is the intact and unchanged version?

In actuality, NO Bible (including the KJV) matches the original text. The idea of the verse is that we should not knowingly teach anything but what Jesus and the Apostles taught.

The hook comes in that "knowingly" part. We honestly do not know if ANYTHING in ANY translation of ANY Bible was influenced by the translators' previous perceptions of what they personally believed. Or, if it wasn't.

Revelation 22 isn't talking about the Bible. It's talking about the Revelation.

But the phrase talks about a book/scroll. In fact, it says "this book/scroll" depending on which version of the bible you read.

So, revelation is a book/scroll not a real thing?

Revelation is a book of the Bible. The warning at the end of Revelation is a warning to not modify the book of Revelation. In its context, that is what Revelation 22:18-19 means. This isn't to say that any book of the Bible should be modified, though.

So, which bible is the original one then?

Because the book of revelations in the NIV says "scroll" and the same book in the KJV says "book".

none. there is no credible evidence that anyone other than The Saints wrote scripture. there is no credible evidence that shows the people who selected the books of the bible had the authority from GOD to do so. the purpose of launching the bible canon obsession was to silence the opposition. this is about to change.

The Bible isn't a book. The Bible is a library of books. Genesis is a book. Exodus is a book. The Psalms, 1 book. Isaiah, 1 book. Gospel of Matthew, 1 book. Epistle to the Romans, 1 book. The Revelation, 1 book.

So, which bible is the original one then?

You do understand that English-language Bibles are translated from Hebrew and Greek manuscripts right?

The Bible wasn't originally written in English.

No English-language Bible is the original Bible.

Yes, that's the form books took in the ancient world, books were scrolls. Scrolls are books.

Okay. Cool. So, other books can be modified without the modifer being cursed?

Honestly, I like the New American Bible or the Catholic Edition of the RSV, since they actually have the books Martin Luther chose to remove.

I am not sure that I want to go there.

But I might have to pick up a copy of the NAB or Catholic RSV to compare with my NIV.

Okay. That is an interesting perspective.

The bible was scrolls but now the bible is a book, right?

So, how do we interpret the passage from Revelations?

You do understand that English-language Bibles are translated from Hebrew and Greek manuscripts right?

Yes -the OT was written in Hebrew and the NT in Greek.

The Bible wasn't originally written in English.

No English-language Bible is the original Bible.

I know.

So, shouldn't Christians be encouraged to read it in Hebrew and Greek, in the same way that converts to Islam are encourgae to learn Arabic and read the Quran in that language (to better understand the revelations from god that it contains)?

God has preserved His Word. We need to enhance a Hebrews 11-type faith.

Ah! I see.

Hebrews 11:1 said:
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see

So, you mean faith without evidence?

See Hebrews 11.6 for the sort of faith that I am referring to.

But the whole point of the Bible's text is that the evidence is overwhelmingly there; unlike many ancient texts, there are over 5000 manuscripts for the New Testament. We don't need the 'correct' church on the one hand, or the 'correct' expert on the other, to inform us of the existence of a Bible, which in Providence has come to us.
