  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Which bible?

I am worried about your eternal soul DC.

For did Jesus himself not say:

I would be very careful about not fulfilling all 613 commandments set out in the OT.

Thank you, I am not worried about be the least in Heaven. As long as I can get in heaven's door I will be very happy. So I always try to follow the spirit and go easy on myself :)

Nope, that is not what I said.

If you look over the commandments, Christians follow most of the commandments. However some of the commandments are clearly for Jews only and does not apply to anyone else.

Can you clarify what you meant then?

On what basis do you reject some commandments and accept others?

This is still not clear.

Any commandment that are inline with the "Love your neighbor as yourself rule" is a keeper.

Anything that is specified to Israelis is out (i.e. you shall blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven, that is to Israelis only.)

Which one? Honey, at the end of the day, there is only one. Oh, yeah...I know that there are many, many different versions...but they all pertain to the same book...or, more properly, set of books.
As someone else pointed out, these books were not written in English, but in ancient languages...namely, Greek and Hebrew. Even if we had an original, intact manuscript, every day folks like you and I would not be able to read the thing...we would still have to depend on translators to tell us what it says.

As it is, what we have are very old, deteriorating copies of copies of copies of the originals. They mainly lie in museums, kept in a specialized environment to prevent further deterioration, and are handled only by people who know what they are doing.

Here's the thing...we have faith that, through all this copying, and translating, and everything that the scrolls have suffered since they were first penned, that God has preserved for us the important information...what we need to know to attain His most precious gift...eternal life.

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter what version you read.
What matters is...will you repent, and come to Jesus Christ?

God is not willing that you should perish...why would you choose to die??

I think that is the key isue: why do you have faith?

Personally, I like the KJV for the sheer beauty and poetry that it exhibits . . . though if you're a Congregationalist or Conservative Reformed Christian you might want to look at the Geneva Bible, which is what the Pilgrims and American Puritans read.

I also like the ESV, as I think it's pretty straight forward and easy to digest.

As for most accurate, I highly recommend if you really want the unchanging word of God, you should learn Hebrew, Aramaic, and Koine Greek, and read it in the original.

And after that, I will be qualified to proclaim what is and what is not the true word of god.

And those that have not done so, will not be allowed to.

Awesome.

Given that Revelations 22 says:

I am wondering what bible I should be reading.

Which one is the intact and unchanged version?

kjv is the most standard, while the modern translations are more comprehensible to the contemporaries, both the old standard and the modern can be used together

Yep. Start with Deu 23:12-13

Dig a hole and poop in it... Okay.

So, how did you decide this one was important and other ones were not?

Seems like a whole lot of cherry-picking is happening in christianity (this is directed at everyone, not just you Ebia).

My point was, of course, that the command makes perfect sense in the context in which it was given, but not for someone living in a Manhattan apartment.

The bible is a collection of stories that together tell a meta story. Such instructions and prohibitions as it contains are set within that story, not as isolated absolutes.

The New American Standard Bible is the most literal translation (NASB). I grew up with the King James Version which can be hard to understand. It helps to compare translations. For example for certain verses I like how the Message version is down to Earth and easy to understand. The New Living Translation (NLT) is also very literal. Biblegateway.com provides the opportunity to see translations side by side. When you compare many of the translations the meaning or the message of the verse or passage that you are reading should be similar. The two versions that I read most often are the Apologetics Study Bible (Version: Holman Christian Standard Bible) that is really good for students and that provides a lot of good question and answer sections. The other is the Every Man's Battle Bible (Version: New Living Translation) (which is geared toward men but I like that it is easy to understand and yet it is still a good translation. This is a good question :)

I see, but aren't you then making the case to ignore the bible completely?

I.e: it is not relevant at all for the here and now.

Or do we just cherrypick the bits we like?

I am wondering because if we ignore what else do we ignore? Original sin? The fall? the flood?

How and on what basis do we exclude material?

Again, anything that is specified to Israelis is out (i.e. how do I blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven?)

So, then we ignore everything in the OT then.

Cool. I can agree with that.

No Eden. No fall. No original sin.

Aren't the apostles Isrealis?

So, that wipes out the NT too.

it is so that all the popular translations of the Bible till now turned out to be more or less imperfect so that the original testimony which God laid/put in the biblical scripture was not fully revealed by the translation(s) due to the fact that it was not given there to be perfect translation, which in its turn due to the fact that for some reasons God does not want to reveal everything directly to all humans, because on the one hand the spiritual servants/workers have to work in order to keep the "sabbath"(the faith) holy, otherwise if everything be given to them without realizing it (by) laboring/making efforts, then they will not deserve a greater reward, because many people know how usually the worker who labors honestly receives a greater wage, on the other hand God wants to give the full revelation mostly to the good/righteous believers/people, because according to Him only such persons deserve to be first in the God's kingdom

Blessings
