Curiously enough, more than 90% of those who know this sentence by heart think that it's supposed to illustrate Jane's sense of confinement, and that she actually WANTS to go out for a walk.
But if you read a few additional lines, you'll notice that she's quite happy to stay inside.

Similarly, if you mention "Wuthering Heights", many people will instantly picture Heathcliff and Cathy on the Heath, although the book pictures such a scene only in passing, and deals mostly with indoor-scenes.
